In some shots Perry looks SO young! But in a few songs from his show, he looks exactly the way I remembered him when I first saw him on Italian TV: very handsome and yet very casual and the "big brother" type! And what a voice! The quality of the sound is good... The picture is better than I expected. But I think it should have included more popular hits... Perhaps next time? When is another DVD coming out?
Not the songs I remember of Perry Como.
I hope that next time they use Perry's hits.
Rare selections from early television
The video transfer from old kinescopes dating from what appears to be 1951-1955 is not bad considering what condition some of the source material must be in. Thirteen of the songs are from those old Como shows, and there are a couple of gems -- a very strong rendition of "Till The End Of Time", several numbers with the Fontane Sisters, and a comedy rendition of "Small Frye" with Bob Hope where Perry sort of imitates Bing. More disappointing are the four numbers taken directly from Perry's first film -- "Doll Face". Oh, it's nice seeing and hearing those numbers, but I have seen far better transfers on video tape. However, we have to take what we can get from these early years of television, so for collectors this is a good item!
This DVD is simply great! The sound quality is amazing considering that this is vintage TV! The song selection in the program is wonderful, with both popular and sacred pieces which are the best ever produced for the holiday season. Don't doubt it, this is a real must-have for all Sinatra and Crosby fans.- More Info about this DVD Actor(s): Bing Crosby - Sinatra DVD Release Date: Released the 07 October 2003 Usually ships in 24 hours

I found this video enjoyable and the production quality of the DVD decent.
Essentially it is a string of black and white television clips of Dean Martin singing presented in a music-video style (right down to the MTV-esque printing of the song information in the lower left corner of the screen).
The bland, milktoast narrator gives an initial introduction before each clip starts-- but the narration is generally not very informative or insightful--comments are rather generic and give basic facts about the song (year of recording and sometimes the artist who orignially recorded it) or Dean's life which most fans already know (that he was born in Stubenville, Ohio; that he drank apple juice instead of liquor onstage; etc).
Ways to improve this DVD would be to have an option where you... More Info about this DVD Actor(s): Dean Martin DVD Release Date: Released the 09 December 2003 Usually ships within 24 hours

She's probably best known these days as actor George Clooney's aunt, but way back in the day, Rosemary Clooney (who died in 2002) was hot stuff, a pop singer with mild jazz leanings and more than a few hits. Rosemary Clooney: Singing at Her Best showcases her rich, lovely voice, and with some 17 songs (including one medley) crammed into just 40 minutes, there's plenty to choose from here, even if it's almost totally bereft of those hits. What we get in these various vintage clips (all in black & white, many apparently from Clooney's own '50s TV show) is a singer who was very much of her time: smiling, perky, perfectly coiffed, wearing an array of bows, lacy collars, and chaste gowns--i.e., appealing, wholesome as all get out, and strictly squaresville. Song-wise, there are some... More Info about this DVD Actor(s): Rosemary Clooney DVD Release Date: Released the 06 April 2004 Usually ships within 24 hours

Now the king of Branson, Missouri, Andy Williams ruled the TV airwaves in the early 1960s, and this compendium of musical numbers culled from the show's archives features some surprisingly astute musical moments. Among others, Williams performs with Bobby Darin, Pearl Bailey, Ella Fitzgerald, Bing Crosby, Jerry Lewis, Sammy Davis Jr., Judy Garland, and Antonio Carlos Jobim. Of course the catch is that to see all of these stars at the peak of their powers, you have to watch them performing with Williams. This will allow you to marvel at how it was that an inveterate WASP, who looked like a clean-cut insurance salesman and sounded like a white-bread Perry Como (if that was possible), became a huge star in the 1960s. It will also give you a glimpse at examples of the now long-gone...
