DVD It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World
Stanley Kramer's sprawling 1963 comedy about a search for buried treasure by at least a dozen people--all played by well-known entertainers of their day--is the kind of mass comedy that Hollywood hasn't made in many years. (Another example from around the same time is Blake Edwards's The Great Race.) After a number of strangers (including Milton Berle, Jonathan Winters, Sid Caesar, Phil Silvers, and others) witness a dying stranger (Jimmy Durante) identify the location of hidden money, a conflict-ridden hunt begins, watched over carefully by a suspicious cop (Spencer Tracy). The ensuing two and a half hours of mayhem has its ups and downs--some bits and performers are certainly funnier than others. But Kramer, who is better known for socially conscious, serious cinema (Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?), is in a mood for broad comic characterization, and some of his jokes are so intentionally obvious (Durante literally kicks a bucket when he dies), they'd have a place in Airplane! Watch for lots of cameo appearances, including Jerry Lewis (who had called Kramer and asked him why he hadn't been invited to participate). --Tom Keogh
Funniest movie I've ever watched.I think I busted a rib laughing.
The Golden Standard for classic Film Comedy
Even seen the movies Rat Race (with Whoppi Goldburg, Seth Green, Cuba Gooding Jr) ? Scavenger Hunt (With Cleavon Little & Roddy McDowell)? Midnight Madness (with Micheal J. Fox)? Time Bandits (Sean Connery, Shelly Duvall, John Cleese as Robin Hood)? If you may have seen any of these films, you should owe a debt to the greatest Chase movie ever, It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World.
World is a story of eight motorist who see an old man (Jimmy Durante) kick the bucket in a car accident. His last words to all of them is "The treasure is under the W". This now is a race to find the fortune under the W. and madcap odyssey to get to the treasure and what happens to get them to get there. Its a CHASE movie that is NUTZ! and it will make you laugh
With Spenser Tracy as the police Captain trying to keep up with Milton Berle, Dorothy Provine & Ethel Merman (first car), Buddy Hackett & Mickey Rooney (second car), Edie Adams & Sid Caesar (the Third car) and Jonathan Winter (the truck). Along the way, these eight meet everyone from Phil Silvers, Dick Shawn, Terry-Thomas and many many comic names from Peter Falk (pre Columbo), Don Knotts, Jerry Lewis, Three Stooges to Buster keaton, Jim Backus, Carl Reiner & Eddie "Rochester" Anderson. Its a who's who of comedy from the 1960's
This film has slapstick, family comedy, stunt comedy and verbal sight gag gems. It has all the comedy styles in one movie. It is a great chase comedy that Stanley Kramer has directed. All Kramer had to do is turn on the camera and watch these talents mesh
Is it worth getting for your DVD library? GAWD YES! It doesn't date itself and still is loads of fun for all ages..Its a family film that all can still enjoy. It is worth ten stars-but they only allow me five!

Zany Madcap Comedy At It's Best!!!
Stanley Kramer put together a great all-star cast for this zany 1963 madcap comedy starring Spencer Tracy, Milton Berle, Jonathan Winters, Sid Caesar, Mickey Rooney, Buddy Hackett, Terry-Thomas, Ethel Merman and Phil Silvers as they are part of a mad dash and running amuck to find money buried under a big "W" in Santa Rosita Park where one silly thing happens after another.
Most noted are the cameo appearances of other well known celebrities such as Jack Benny, Don Knotts, The Three Stooges, Jimmy Durante (who started all of this after speeding, flying off a ledge and "kicking the bucket" thereafter), Norman Fell, Carl Reiner, Jerry Lewis, Ben Blue and Paul Ford.
As for this film, this was Spencer Tracy at his best, starring as Captain Culpepper of the Santa Rosita Police Department. Here he awaits the whole wild bunch as they attempt in every way to get to the money first where they steal cars and break the speed limit or hire pilots to fly them to Santa Rosita. Some of the real funny scenes: Mickey Rooney and Buddy Hackett attempting to land Tyler Fitzgerald's (Jim Backus) plane after he's knocked out cold; Sid Caesar and Edie Adams being locked up inside the basement of a hardware store while they were looking for a pick and a shovel; Jonathan Winters' destruction of Ray and Irwin's Garage; and Spencer Tracy running away with the money and the entire bunch closing in on him.
This is a film that will get you rolling on the floor with laughter. A must see for all ages young and old!
Director Blake Edwards, fresh from the success of the first two Pink Panther movies, indulged his love of classic slapstick comedy with this long free-for-all, which throws in everything but Laurel and Hardy's kitchen sink. The film reunites Some Like It Hot stars Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon, ably aided by a spunky Natalie Wood. The subject is a New-York-to-Paris auto race in the early years of the 20th century, pitting the Great Leslie (Curtis), a goody-goody dressed all in white--even his teeth sparkle--against the malevolent Professor Fate (Lemmon), whose coal-black heart is reflected in his handlebar mustache. He looks like a bill collector from a silent- movie melodrama. Lemmon does double duty, also playing the pampered, drunken king of a small European country, whose laugh... The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming looks overly cute now, but really, it was pretty hip for 1966. The cold war was in full deep-freeze when this well-meaning comedy tried to thaw things out a little: a Soviet submarine beaches on the New England coast, sending the locals into a paranoid frenzy. The chief pleasure of the film is Alan Arkin as the sub captain; this was Arkin's first major film role, and he had already mastered his exasperated, slow-burning frown (to say nothing of mastering his Russian dialogue). Arkin snagged an Oscar® nomination, with the movie receiving nominations for best picture, adapted screenplay, and editing--nods that reflect the film's smashing success at the box office. Somewhat dated now, the movie still has its place in the roster of... An air race from London to Paris provides the premise for this marvelous comedy, which features thrilling aerial photography and some stupefying stunt flying. It's set in 1910, when the (lovingly re-created) airplanes of the period were likelier to sputter and crash than they were to go in a straight line. The international contest requires an international cast, including Stuart Whitman as a cowboy American interested in the ladylove (Sarah Miles) of an English ace (James Fox). Alberto Sordi and Gert Frobe represent the Italian and German nations; Terry-Thomas plans frightful sabotage for race day. From the jaunty opening song and the great opening-credits drawings by Gerald Searle onward, the movie has a pleasingly breezy tone that sits well with the meticulous flying sequences. This is... This Mike Todd production was a star-studded, multi-million dollar extravaganza when first released in 1956. It remains enjoyable family fare, but time has somewhat dulled its shine. Still, it compares favorably to the overly long, TV mini-series starring Pierce Brosnan and Eric Idle.
Elegant David Niven plays the neurotically punctual Phileas Fogg, a British gent who is spurned on by a wager to prove he can travel around the world in 80 days. He is accompanied by his valet, played with persnickety humor by Cantinflas.
Nominated for several Academy Awards, this was written by John Farrow (Mia's dad) and S.J. Perelman, based on Jules Verne's 1873 classic. The fun part is the razzle-dazzle. Todd knew what he was doing with all those exotic locales and over 40 cameo appearances,... Neil Simon's terribly funny play about roommates Oscar the slob and Felix the neurotic was first committed to film in this 1968 production, directed by Gene Saks (Barefoot in the Park). Perfectly timed, ingeniously rendered, not a hair out of place in the history-making performances of Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon (or the great support cast), The Odd Couple is a movie that one just has to see every two or three years to stay happy. The poker-game sequence in which Oscar's cronies seem to be falling under the sway of fussy Felix's talent for making sandwiches is priceless. --Tom KeoghMore Info about this DVD Director(s): Gene Saks DVD Release Date: Released the 12 December 2000 Usually ships in 24 hours
