Review(s): DVD The Very Best of the Ed Sullivan Show, Vol. 2: The Greatest Entertainers
The jackson 5
Please can someone say if the Jackson 5 appear on this DVD, if not which ED-S dvd do they?
Fantastic Retrospective--Part One!
This DVD highlights just a comparative few of the very special moments of the classic Ed Sullivan Show on television. It is a real treat to own and watch; the viewer plays and can replay a classic comedy routine by Jackie Gleason as well as countless novelty acts. Ed Sullivan exercised enormous control over the show and the result is quality entertainment. A very young Julie Andrews sings "I Could Have Danced All Night" from My Fair Lady during a episode in 1956. Sammy Davis Jr. and Ella Fitzgerald sing together in another wonderful clip. The Beatles. The Rolling Stones. Some of the clips are in black and white but it doesn't diminish the viewer's enjoyment one bit. The quality of earlier color video clips is not as good as I had wished it be but color tv wasn't up to today's quality standards at that time. Although the DVD show is 98 minutes long it goes by as if it were just a few minutes. Included is a rare interview with Ed Sullivan and his wife from 1958. I would strongly recommend this DVD as a BUY! for those who want to reminisce or for anyone who wants a splendid introduction to the talents of that time.
The Very Best
This is a great compilation from the Ed Sullivan Show featuring 80 minutes of music and comedy sketches. The highlights for me were ?"She Loves You" (the Beatles), "Hound Dog" (Elvis Presley), and "Fortunate Son" (CCR). The only drawback is that none of these performances are complete. But it's still a worthwhile investment for anyone who loves Ed's show and wants to see it again.

If you have a real love for the history of musical theatre, this DVD is a must for your collection. There are several highlights that are simply joyous. The Larry Kert, Carol Lawrence "Tonight" duet is heart rendering and a treat for the ears! This alone is worth the price of this DVD. But, add to that the young and beautiful Julie Andrews in her prime as she delivers the quintessential version of "Lovely". And, you will understand why so many raved about Pearl Bailey in "Hello Dolly". When she sings "Before the Parade Passes By", she does not merely sing the music, she also sings the lyrics and this is something Carol Channing never really did. The great Gwen Verdon singing and dancing as only she could from "Sweet Charity", the magnificent voice of Richard Kiley delivering the... Broadway's Lost Treasures delivers what the title promises: 21 historic performances of great moments in American musical theater televised on the Tony Awards between 1967 and 1986. (Five were not included when the program was broadcast on PBS in 2003.) Unlike some other arts, theater has rarely been well-documented, so it's a treat to see these numbers performed by the original artists rather than experience them through audio recordings or tepid movie adaptations. Sure, sound and picture quality are only adequate, some of the numbers are minimally staged and some appear to be lip-synched, and some of the performances that do have excellent film counterparts (Yul Brynner in The King and I, Robert Preston in The Music Man, Joel Grey in Cabaret) seem rather... This DVD presents 15 performances (10 in color, 5 in black and white) selected from the Ed Sullivan Show aired at different times in 1950's and 60's. The performers are, in the order of appearance, Jackson 5(with 10 year old Michael!), Bill Haley and His Comets, Elvis Presley, Doors, Ray Charles, Jackie Wilson, James Brown, Roy Orbison, Beatles, Temptations and Supremes, Loving Spoonful, Mamas and Papas, CCR, Young Rascals, and Janis Joplin. Each performance is a gem(with a possible exception of one which appears to be lip-synced); the DVD could very well be called "the 15 best performances of Ed Sullivan". The picture quality is excellent, and the sound clean and good. The commentary by Michelle Phillips of the Mamas and the Papas is concise and yet helpful.
So, why not 5 stars? There... More Info about this DVD Actor(s): Ed Sullivan DVD Release Date: Released the 02 September 2003 Usually ships within 24 hours

A great concept: The Beatles appeared four times on CBS' The Ed Sullivan Show, and while one is tempted to skip through this collection to watch only the Fab Four's 20 performances, there is historic value in seeing Sullivan's complete programs. With America reeling from the murder of a popular president, JFK, less than three months prior, the Beatles' Sullivan debut on February 9, 1964, ushered a renewing joy into the country's living rooms. The band kept it up another two weeks, sharing Sullivan's variety-show bills with the likes of impressionist Frank Gorshin, comedians Allen & Rossi, future Monkee Davy Jones (in a scene from Oliver!), and sundry unrepentant vaudevillians, magicians, and acrobats. Various problems with microphones and bad direction (one barely...
