DVD A Concert for George
Exceptionally moving but not the least bit sentimental, Concert for George is a splendid tribute to the late George Harrison, whose contributions to the Beatles were so often hidden in the long shadows of John Lennon and Paul McCartney. A year to the day after Harrison's November 29, 2001 death, Eric Clapton assembled some musicians--people who had played with Harrison and known him intimately, including McCartney, Ringo Starr, and Tom Petty--to perform his music at London's Royal Albert Hall. They take on not just the predictable ("My Sweet Lord" and "Something," beautifully sung by Billy Preston and Sir Paul, respectively), but also lesser-known fare like "Old Brown Shoe" and "Beware of Darkness," all to superbly empathetic effect. But the tune most likely to make you misty-eyed is "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," which brings together three of the five musicians who played on the original recording: Ringo on drums, Clapton replicating his own classic solo, and McCartney playing piano and harmonizing with Clapton's lead vocal. Concert for George enjoyed a brief theatrical release, but even those who caught it on the big screen will delight in this two-disc DVD edition. Disc 1 features the complete concert (sans interview and rehearsal footage, but with a few additional songs and in the original running order), while disc 2 contains the theatrical version and some additional backstage and photo material. All in all, a beautiful piece of work. Wish you were here, George--but man, what a way to be missed. --Sam Graham
IF YOUR A BEATLE/GEORGE HARRISON FAN, AND YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THIS DVD, THEN YOUR NOT A FAN. IT IS THE BEST PERFORMED TRIBUTE CONCERT EVER CONCEIVED. LAID-BACK GEORGE HIMSELF I'M SURE WOULD BE PROUD OF THIS EFFORT. THE ONLY DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE SONGS PEFORMED AND HIS ORIGINAL RECORDINGS IS THAT GEORGE IS NOT THERE HIMSELF TO SING THEM. VERY MOVING, CAPTIVATING AND END'S POIGNANTLY WITH JOE BROWN'S "I'LL SEE YOU IN MY DREAMS". AN ABSOLUTE MUST SEE, AND HEAR IN DTS.
Even my husband's ex, and my good friend, enjoyed it so much we're giving her one for her birthday!
We have the kind of family where we promised that all ex's and all family children, blood related or not, would be family. People think I'm strange because my friendship with my husband's ex and her family is so important to me. She was visiting us and our granddaughter in Ontario, CAN, she lives in L.A. and she wakens to classical music every morning. I decided to put on Concert for George, which always brings me to tears, but she never took her eyes off of the screen. She especially enjoyed Ravi Shankar and his daughter's opening to the concert and educated us on what the music meant. As I told my husband...no person I have shared this DVD with has ever left it with a 'so what' opinion. They all loved it and I think, most of my friends have it by now, Beatle lovers or not. Thanks to all who made this a tribute to George, but also a way to educate people about his talents, his many, many friends, his loving wife and son, all of whom, obviously adored George and his music, as do I....and my close friend Mary!
God Bless You George
Although it could have been twice as long, this double-DVD set effectively captures over three hours of highlights from one of the most comprehensive and diverse collection of guitarists ever assembled for a single event. Recorded over three days in June of 2004 to benefit Eric Clapton's Crossroads Center in Antigua (as do the sales of this set), the show is not surprisingly heavy on the rootsy blues and country that comprise Clapton's primary inspirations. But it also includes folk (James Taylor), gospel (Robert Randolph & the Family Band), fret-shredding rockers (Steve Vai who delivers a dazzling performance), jazz (John McLaughlin), and, most interestingly, Indian classical music (a stunning piece from Vishwa Mohan Bhatt).
Most compelling are the rare and sometimes unusual... More Info about this DVD Director(s): B.B. King - Ron de Moraes DVD Release Date: Released the 09 November 2004 Usually ships in 6 to 11 days

Before We Are the World, before the Amnesty International concerts, before Live Aid, Live 8, 46664, and all the other charitable and/or political events that have used popular music as their principal draw, there was George Harrison's 1971 Concert for Bangladesh, a stirring affair released here in a fine two-disc set. The cause--raising money for the beleaguered people of Bangladesh (formerly East Pakistan), who were ravaged by war, floods, and famine--was enough to attract the support of stars like the former Beatle, who had never fronted a band before, along with Bob Dylan and Eric Clapton, both of whom had been out of the limelight for some years due to various personal problems and choices. Given the little time that Harrison, whose help had been... More Info about this DVD Director(s): Saul Swimmer DVD Release Date: Released the 25 October 2005 Usually ships in 24 hours

They step onto the stage of London's Royal Albert Hall: Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker, and Eric Clapton. The capacity crowd, which includes Sean Penn and Jude Law, stands to greet them. Thirty-seven years after their farewell concert, the famously fiery Cream did the unthinkable--they reunited. This double-disc collection (and accompanying CD set) captures highlights from the historic four-day engagement, beginning with a buoyant "I'm So Glad" and ending with a triumphant "Sunshine of Your Love." It would be churlish to suggest that Cream appears exactly as they did in the 1960s (Bruce looks a little frail), but the legendary power trio still has the goods. Bruce is still the essence of soul (a particularly rich vocal on "Politician"), while Baker is as irrepressible as ever (a rare vocal on... Initially broadcast as a TV miniseries to go with the series of three Anthology double-CD albums, this set of eight documentary tapes has the heft and scope of one of Ken Burns's expansive projects. Still, unless you are either a historian or a truly committed fan, you'll find yourself with way more material--particularly about the Beatles' early lives as lads in Liverpool--than you'll want to watch. The documentary material is copious, including early performance films and tapes, at the point before they found their true voices. The actual Beatlemania years--beginning in 1963 and concluding in 1970--feature extensive performance films, as well as home movies and archival material. The best parts, of course, are the interviews with the Beatles themselves, who produced the...
