Review(s): DVD Best of Rowan & Martin's Laugh in 2
Wishing for a real offer for Laugh In

I went all out and purchased, through television, the Rowan and Martin's laugh in, what a joke. First problem is that there is no order. And after awhile they stopped sending them. When i called they said they had not made anymore, and maybe some day they would. But so far, after a year, they never have. Then they put out the best of series. Which i admit, are not apart of the ones they had sent me in the beginning. But again, they leave you with so little and for so very much money!
Many libraries offer the Rowan and Martin's Laugh in Best of Sets and i suggest renting them out and watching them instead of purchasing them. I am really disgusted with the company and how they put these things out.
They should treat true fans a little better. I didn't watch too many of the original shows when they were on television as i wasn't old enough. But i have watched some when i was a teenager when they were on in reruns and i simply fell in love, 10 years after they were over with. And i still am. Yes, some of the material is a bit dated, but even us 35 year olds still love it!
Put it out by season and i think you'll have a hit, keep up these shoddy practices of ripping us off for very little, and you won't have much other than bad reviews.

The show is 5 stars, but the dvd...

Is only 3. Because it's just a few episodes. I will not buy Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In unless they box the entire series.

I want to see it all again!

Why not release the show by season?

Seasons 1 and 2 are easily the best, with Lily Tomlin easily being the best reason to watch season 3...

With a dual-layer disc, 4 episodes can be put onto one disc, with a handful of extras, and look very respectable (in the eyes of anyone who believed it when the mainstream media shoved DVD down our throats as having better quality.)

But 6 episodes on 3 single-layer discs, plus interviews, invariably leads to lower image quality. While other shows are worse, this packaging and contents only make me believe that we fans of this series are being fleeced; taken for a ride.

And the only series that had received even worse treatment was the original Star Trek series (at $20 per two-episode disc, Paramount really was taking big chances with its fan-base... The original Trek made back its money and more before Berman took over with the Next Generation and 3 dreary spinoffs... but that's another topic!) Of course, Paramount finally did the right thing and release the original Trek per-season, for only a moderately-inflated price. It's time Laugh-In fans get better treated as well.

Great show. But fans don't deserve this draconian treatment and fleecing.

Smothered - The Censorship Struggles of the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour DVD

The tribulations of Tommy and Dick Smothers and their popular late-'60s television show are detailed in Maureen Muldaur's interesting 92-minute documentary. Viewing the clips from The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, one might find it hard to imagine that they were considered controversial at the time; indeed, the jabs at censorship, gun ownership, the Vietnam war, and more seem mild by today's raunchy standards. But controversial they were, especially to CBS, who aired (and eventually canceled) the Smothers' show. Turns out that Tommy, the "dumb" one, was in fact a gadfly who turned the program into a cause célèbre somewhat beyond its actual significance; and in the end, as one of the talking heads featured here points out, it was the Smothers' decreasing sense of fun that... The Flip Wilson Show DVD

For four years in the early 1970s, comedian Flip Wilson presided over one of the most popular variety shows on television. The show featured weekly guest stars as well as Wilson's own characters, the most noteworthy of whom were "Reverend Leroy," the genially bombastic pastor of the "Church of What's Happening Now," and "Geraldine Jones," a thoroughly sassy and proud African American woman played by Wilson in a miniskirt. Featuring highlights from five episodes of the program, this collection includes the show's very first appearance on September 17, 1970. Wilson cavorts shamelessly and hysterically as Geraldine during an interview with David Frost and in a skit that features TV legend Ed Sullivan, acting (well, sort of) as a lounge lizard in garish '70s garb (including purple pants and a... Sonny & Cher - The Ultimate Collection DVD

It's not what you'd call high art, but there are some highly enjoyable moments in this nicely packaged box set, featuring nine complete shows (plus ample bonus material) spread out over three discs.

Beginning as a summer replacement in 1971, The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour earned its own regular time slot that same year, running for three straight seasons and then returning in 1976 (as The Sonny & Cher Show), after the couple's divorce. The show's formula, which had already been established both onstage and on the small screen (their '69 pilot episode is among the extra features), includes plenty of music (duets, Cher's solo performances in typically outlandish Bob Mackie gowns, various guest shots); lots of shtick (consisting mostly of Cher's put-downs of the minimally... Johnny Carson - The Tonight Show: Return to Studio One, 3/6/69 DVD

This is an absolute must-have! Sure, it would be great to have the entire show, but considering how the idiots at NBC lost so much from that era, we're lucky to have this. AFRTS did much editing for various reasons, so that may account for some of the missing segments. And considering the limitations of the kinescope process, some of the technical faults can be forgiven.

George Gobel steals the show, and that's not easy with Bob Hope and Dean Martin on the sofa...

More and more TV shows previously thought to be "lost" are turning up in underground vaults around the country, so maybe there's still a little hope that we'll get more of Johnny from the 60's, but for the moment, this is a good start. More Info about this DVD
