  • DVD JFK - A Presidency Revealed (History Channel)

JFK: A Presidency Revealed delves unflinchingly into the presidency of John F. Kennedy, examining the political crises, social unrest, and personal intricacies that marked his administration. What makes this three-part series stand out is its willingness to admit Kennedy's faults--in particular his troubled marriage, his infidelities, his illnesses, and his sometimes-excessive use of painkillers to cope with the pain of his bad back--as well as the missteps of his presidency, providing a strikingly balanced and human portrait of this all-too-often-mythologized president. Particularly revelatory is how the inexperience that resulted in the bungled Bay of Pigs operation led, in turn, to a far more skilled and careful handing of the Cuban missile crisis, in which the world came closer to nuclear war than ever before and perhaps ever since. A wealth of film, video, photographs, and previously unreleased secret recordings provide new insights into Kennedy's political and personal life (Kennedy was, as this documentary makes clear, the first president to really use the media to achieve his goals, launching an entirely new political forum).

Accompanying JFK: A Presidency Revealed are two episodes of A&E's Biography series--one a considerably more hero-worshipping profile of Kennedy that nonetheless provides worthwhile background information about his childhood and early career; the other a profile of JFK's father Joe P. Kennedy that explores the drive and ambition that set the entire Kennedy family on its political path. All in all, a valuable and informative document. --Bret Fetzer

Review(s): DVD JFK - A Presidency Revealed (History Channel)
    Excellent!

I would highly recommend this item for any JFK enthusiast. It is a very detailed account of Kennedy's Presidency. The three-part series includes interesting interviews with many of Kennedy's staff, family and others who were close to him. The series also includes countless video clips of Kennedy, including press conferences, speeches, home movies and more. In my opinion, one of the most interesting parts of this series is the recorded phone conversations and audio from cabinet meetings. Kennedy, sensing that he was in a historic position, had these items recorded.

To sum it all up, this is an excellent series that is jam-packed with information on Kennedy and his term in office. If you are looking for detail with respect to his assassination, this item is not what you are looking for.

Very Good Except For 2 Things

This Documentary features many outstanding color newsreels of JFK and that era. Everything but the last 20 minutes or so is thorough, fair,& quite impressive, but Vietnam was handled very poorly. The thrust of the film being that JFK would have had to have sent ground troops at some point to bolster American Prestige is pure speculation at best. When Kennedy signed NSAM 263 in Oct. 63- he didn't do it for the hell of it,it was the first phase in withdrawing all troops by the end of '65. Though, the Diem Coup of 11-1-63 complicated matters, there is no evidence JFK ever considered putting in ground forces. The Assassination is just hardly even touched on- , but paraphrasing- the back brace is supposed to have kept Kennedy in place when Oswald's shot him in the neck. First of all JFK was shot in the back- The Autopsy Face Sheet- The Death Certificate-The 2 FBI Agents report, and the Clothes and Jacket all put the wound in the back at 5-6 inches below the neck line.It was the Warren Commission who moved this up to the Neck to make the Single Bullet Theory Viable.Secondly,- a metal plate was put in his lumbar spine in Jul. 53 to alleviate pressure, this is what so sadly kept him immobilized during the shooting, the man had no mobility.

    A Presidency Revealed

JFK: A Presidency Revealed is a great documentary on the Kennedy Years. Its airing and subsequent release was part of the commemoration of the 40th anniversary of President Kennedy's assassination.
The program features interviews with historians, members of JFK's staff and cabinet, Sen. Ted Kennedy, and many others. Even though it does follow the same pattern as other documentaries and books on President Kennedy, it adds new insight from new documents and medical records. The set features the program, plus bonus features of A&E documentaries on the Kennedy family. This is a fascinating show. Watch it, and then read Robert Dallek's An Unfinished Life.

Crisis - Behind a Presidential Commitment DVD

Having earned John F. Kennedy's trust with his 1960 campaign-trail film Primary, pioneering cinema verité documentarian Robert Drew expressed his desire to document a president in crisis. When African American college students Vivian Malone and James Hood prepared to enroll at the all-white University of Alabama in June 1963, governor George Wallace supplied the crisis, defying a federal court order and vowing to prevent the students' enrollment. Kennedy granted unprecedented access to Drew and his unobtrusive four-team crew, who used handheld cameras to cover both sides of the conflict: Wallace self-righteously clings to the futility of segregation (and more than a few racist Alabamans support him), while a flurry of phone calls between JFK, Attorney General Robert F.... RFK DVD

I was hoping for much better from this production. But based on the fact that nobody else in the world has seen it, I should have known better. I thought the movie was so bad, I could not finish.

The writers have chosen to rewrite history in many ways. First, RFK apparently had schizophrenia because his reality was very distorted. JFK kept appearing to RFK throughout the movie. The most interesting thing is that RFK only speaks in a Massachusetts accent to his brother (or brother's illusion). As if distorting reality is not enough of a crime, the movie accuses Lyndon Johnson and the CIA of killing John Kennedy.

Read a book on this fallen Catholic leader. Do not rely on this travesty as a source. More Info about this DVD

The Men Who Killed Kennedy DVD

The first six chapters of The Men Who Killed Kennedy is a must read before viewing chapters seven , eight and nine. I do agree with another reviewer in respect to this series lacking cohesion. However, I consider this "brainstorming" in a way and a chance to see all the theories out there. Who did it and who covered it up will be explained in the remaining three chapters. The Zapruder film sets the stage for everything to follow. From the Zapruder film, we know that Kennedy was shot from the front. Since the Parkland Doctors also confirm this , we are sure there was a cover up since the autopsy photos show no rear exit wound. These facts are enough to conclude we were not told the truth and one could just stop there. I guess what many people are asking is the government to finally... More Info about this DVD

FDR - A Presidency Revealed (History Channel) DVD

When paired with the bonus documentaries included, "FDR - A Presidency Revealed" presents a good introduction to Franklin Roosevelt. However, you really need to read a good biography of Franklin Roosevelt to learn the whole story. So much is left out of this DVD.

"A Presidency Revealed" touches on some of the more private and secretive aspects of Franklin D. Roosevelt, such as the fact that he was a paraplegic due to polio, yet most Americans thought him to be only lame.

Roosevelt was at times a cunning president. He recognized the grave danger of Adolph Hitler, who had conquered Czechoslovakia, Austria, Poland, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Norway, Denmark, North Africa, was manacing the North Atlantic and pounding Great Britain. Yet he had to manage the strong... More Info about this DVD
