One really can't account for good taste. This rarely broadcast thriller starred Sean Connery as he was first attemtping to escape 007 typecasting during the 1970's. He is in fine form here as a Scandinavian Security Chief trying to negotiate with and outwit a team of terrorists. Excellent winter landscape photography adds to the film's realism and there are some interesting plot surprises along the way. Kudos to 20th Century Fox for releasing this gem on DVD; I never thought I'd see this film again. The quality of the DVD is very good as well.
gritty cat and mouse game with terrorists
This movie also goes by the title of Ransom in Britain. It is a tense drama with Ian McShane and Sean Connery (need I say more!!???). Connery is the head of a security force sent in to negotiate with terrorist holding an ambassador and his servants. The terrorist demand transport to the airport, where they learn an aeroplane has been hijacked and is awaiting the arrival of the terrorists and their hostages. Connery is determined to stop them at all costs. It is a taught game of move-counter move, with nearly everyone involved running their own game within a game, and Connery can trust no one. McShane is very believable at the head of the hijacking team, that has more than one mask he is wearing.

The up-and-down career of director John Milius had no finer moment than The Wind and the Lion, a dandy adventure tale. It's based on fact: An American (played by Candice Bergen) and her two children were kidnapped in 1904 Morocco by a Berber tribe, an international incident settled by President Theodore Roosevelt's "big stick" military muscle. The film's sweep and swagger are unabashedly old-fashioned, even as Milius occasionally pokes fun at the grand characters. Some of the peripheral material is sloppy, but as long as Milius keeps his sights locked on the two powerful protagonists, he's dead-on: Brian Keith makes a gutsy Roosevelt, and Sean Connery is in splendid form (with Scots accent in place--got a problem with that?) as the dashing Berber chieftain. Actually, wrong is just wrong in this leaden spoof of media irresponsibility. Written and directed by Richard Brooks, this film is a sorry attempt to one-up the near-perfect Network. In this 1982 satire, Sean Connery plays a network correspondent who finds himself using and being used by terrorists, government officials, arms dealers, and the like while trying to scoop the competition. In some ways, this film looks positively prescient in its depiction of media ruthlessness, anticipating by more than a decade the rise of the kind of tabloid TV that has spread like a virus. Jean-Jacques Annaud's The Name of the Rose is a flawed attempt to adapt Umberto Eco's highly convoluted medieval bestseller for the screen, necessarily excising much of the esoterica that made the book so compelling.
