Review(s): DVD Seabiscuit (2-Disc Collector's Set)
An Equine Rocky. What a great 'tail', I LOVED IT!!!
Sensitive, heartfelt and heartwarming yet not maudling or corny. This is one great Hollywood epic for everyone who roots for the underdog, er. . .horse. Seabiscuit is an Equine "Rocky" for sure. It may have you tearing up at times, but that's not bad in this case. It's a great story and there's a happy ending too. What more could anyone want? Wish that horse were still around.
DON'T BOTHER WITH 2 DISC SET!!!
Seabiscuit is a good addition to your DVD library, but save the extra money and buy the single disc. I feel taken by the 2 disc set. The only real addition is the Match Race footage which is only a few minutes. The Winner's Circle, HBO First Look and True Story are all re-edits of the interviews and commentaries on the first disc. It's too bad that the studio did this because I will never pay for extra features again. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.
Remarkable Film!
This movie is proof that Hollywood IS capable of putting out a quality product. All the elements come together on this one-rare indeed. Gets my vote for Picture Of The Year.
Amazon has mistakenly listed the stars of "Seabiscuit the Lost Documentary" as Jeff Bridges & Chris Cooper and the director as Gary Ross. This is incorrect. "Seabiscuit the Lost Documentary" is the ORIGINAL Seabiscuit film from 1939 which was made by Charles Howard himself, and stars Charles and his wife Marcella. And also the REAL Seabiscuit is in it. Don't let Amazon's incorrect information stop you from buying this special piece of horseracing history.

This PBS documentary is surprisingly good and I'm surprised it is an American Experience title. This features author interviews and words from Red Pollard's daughter and friends. There is fantastic actual race footage of the glorious, knobby-kneed, funny little animal. Seabiscuit sure put War Admiral and Sam Riddle in their place. Seabiscuit is my hero because his is the story of an underdog coming to glory--but its for real! More Info about this DVD DVD Release Date: Released the 03 June 2003 Usually ships within 24 hours

Proving that truth is often greater than fiction, the handsome production of Seabiscuit offers a healthy alternative to Hollywood's staple diet of mayhem. With superior production values at his disposal, writer-director Gary Ross (Pleasantville) is a bit too reverent toward Laura Hillenbrand's captivating bestseller, unnecessarily using archival material--and David McCullough's familiar PBS-styled narration--to pay Ken Burns-like tribute to Hillenbrand's acclaimed history of Seabiscuit, the knobby-kneed thoroughbred who "came from behind" in the late 1930s to win the hearts of Depression-weary Americans. That caveat aside, Ross's adaptation retains much of the horse-and-human heroism that Hillenbrand so effectively conveyed; this is a classically styled "legend" movie like... Ben-Hur scooped an unprecedented 11 Academy Awards® in 1959 and, unlike some later rivals, richly deserved every single one. This is epic filmmaking on a scale that had not been seen before and is unlikely ever to be seen again. But it's not just running time or a cast of thousands that makes an epic, it's the subject matter, and here the subject--Prince Judah Ben-Hur (Charlton Heston) and his estrangement from old Roman pal Messala (Stephen Boyd)--is rich, detailed, and sensitively handled. Director William Wyler, who had been a junior assistant on MGM's original silent version back in 1925, never sacrifices the human focus of the story in favor of spectacle, and is aided immeasurably by Miklos Rozsa's majestic musical score, arguably the greatest ever written for a Hollywood...
