  • DVD The Boys of St. Vincent

Based on a true case that scandalized Canada, this film takes place in two halves. The first, set in the mid-1970s, deals with a Catholic orphanage, run by Brother Lavin (Henry Czerny), who doesn't have the boys' best interest at heart. Rather, he uses them to fuel his own sick sexual desires, becoming a predator in a priest's collar, making an indelible mark on 10-year-old boys. And he's not the only one (just the most vicious). Cut to 1990: One of the now-grown boys comes forward to accuse Lavin and face him in court. But Lavin is now married and the father of two boys--and the church continues to deny that any impropriety occurred. This is strong stuff, with the emotional pain almost harder to take than the shadowy scenes of sexual abuse--but the latter are upsetting as well. Originally made for Canadian TV but released in American theaters. --Marshall Fine

Review(s): DVD The Boys of St. Vincent
    The Boys of St Vincent

i liked the movie "Boys of St. Vincents" quite a bit. it wasn't exactly what i thought it would be, but it is a good movie, and i would recommend it to my friends.

    Thought-provoking

An hour and a half of shame and abuse followed by an hour and a half of how the boys turned out a decade later as a result. With such fine acting, you will not be able to turn off the movie despite the length. And I promise you that you'll be thinking about the characters for days to come.

A Catholic friend who studied to be a priest watched this film with me and said afterward that it is the most accurate portrayal of life in the priesthood that he had ever seen. He talked about the film for weeks.

Finally a movie that makes the church accountable

What can be said about the Boys Of St Vincents that has not already been said. I am awaiting my DVD of this Tele Movie, after first viewing this (mini-series, as we call them here in Australia) back in the 90s, I was so amazed to see that these things so often go un checked and undelt with by the authorities and the (not suprising) Church or are swept under the carpet to protect, not so much as the preist, but the church's reputation at the expence of the child that is the victim of these haenious crimes.. This movie makes me wonder just how long this has been going on. It was good to see movie that was not afraid to tackle the taboo subject of Child Molestation and physical abuse. The acting is 100%, and as with the rest of the reviews, Henry's portrayal of Brother Lavin was nothing short of brilliant, the part was well executed in his acting ability. The children that were cast also put in exceptional performances. This movie is not really for the faint at heart but a very hard hitting in your face movie. A lot has been said about the breif child nudity, I do not believe that this taints the movie in any way and is with in the context of what this movies is about, Child, mental, physical and sexual abuse. Defenatly a must see for anyone who loves a good movie and a true one at that. Though it is loosly based on fact, this does seem to be happening more and more these days. This movie provokes discussion and can only assist to stop these kinds of things from happening. Do yourself a favour and buy this DVD today.

    Abandoned DVD

Like many in America, I'm one who enjoys venturing away from the all-too-common Hollywood films that are filled with flashy violence, gangs, killings, (mostly done with special effects).... and of course an unending supply of four letter words in nearly every situation imaginable.

Yet foreign films often tend to derive their impact more from a sense of 'realism', and that is precisely what this film "Abandoned" ("Torzok") does.

Most of us would like to believe that a Hungarian orphanage such as the one depicted in this film could never exist. But they have.... and likely still do.

Some of the scenes I've read about in other reviews of this film have often been referred to as sexual, and I hardly see this as such. Most of us cannot begin to imagine... More Info about this DVD

    For A Lost Soldier DVD

this film could have been a masterpiece, it lacked a more nudity, just to keep you interested. the boy who played the soldier's friend was wonderful, and the seen when yhe half naked girl came into the soldiers room, spoiled the whole film. but i still gave it a generous 4 . Return to Innocence DVD

I bought this DVD not knowing what to expect -- it had been recommended by Amazon.com -- and the initial thoughts that swept through my mind when I started watching it were "It's in black and white!" and "wooden acting." But after only 20 minutes, I had to turn off the film. Only about 18 months later did I find the courage to watch the entire film -- not because it is has a dreadful director or actors but because it contains stomach-wrenching power.

The director, Rocky Costanzo, concedes in the audio commentary that he picked the script, which draws a broad line between pederasty and [...], and directed it at the age of 27 just to get noticed. But he is so disarmingly frank about the film's weaknesses that it's impossible to hold any grudges.

That said,... More Info about this DVD
