  • DVD Andromeda - Season 1 Collection

Based on an idea by Gene Roddenberry, Andromeda confidently wears its debt to Star Trek on its sleeve, recalling the best sci-fi of Roddenberry's heyday. The two-part premiere "Under the Night" and "An Affirming Flame" make for a terrific introduction to the lead character, Captain Dylan Hunt, played by Kevin (ex-Hercules) Sorbo. He's a sympathetically flawed idealist in command of the Andromeda Ascendant, a massive starship of the now-disbanded Systems Commonwealth. The fall of civilization has meant that although she ought to be a relic she remains the zenith of technological advancement.

In the series opener we see Captain Hunt in battle against 10,000 enemy ships, winning a bout of fisticuffs with a close friend turned enemy traitor, wrestling with the shock of being frozen in time for 300 years and then diplomatically negotiating his way out of a salvage rights battle for his ship. The Andromeda Ascendant's emotionally driven, life-like computer is desired by the Eureka Maru salvage vessel, and feisty Captain Beka Valentine can barely stop her engineer Harper from drooling about tinkering with her. The Maru's shipmates are similarly driven: Rev Bem (from another sworn enemy race) has a spiritual calling, while cutesy-pie Trance Gemini's motivations are part of her winning mysteriousness. One final addition is the show's muscle, Tyr, the enemy with a conscience who would later get the spotlight in such episodes as "All Neptune's Great Oceans" and "Music of a Distant Drum."

"The Pearls That Were His Eyes" was one of the first conceived episode ideas, but was delayed until the availability of a Star Trek regular. That eventually turned out to be John (Q) de Lancie, who gives a brilliant turn as Beka's long-lost Uncle Sid. "Star-Crossed" is the first-season episode that caused more gossip than any other. Stargate regular Michael Shanks guest stars, falls in love with Rommie on screen (and with Lexa Doig off screen), and then suddenly quits SG-1. There's certainly a spark between them in the show to support the gossip. The secondary cause for talk was its broadcast rescheduling in sympathy with the events of September 11 since it opens with a terrorist attack. Criticized by some for its extreme violence, the season finale "Its Hour Come 'Round at Last" will stay with you one way or another. Maybe for the sight of an alternate Rommie turning uncharacteristically nasty to everyone and seriously kicking butt. Or maybe the mind-blowing Magog Worldship, made up of 20 planets and their sun. Or maybe just the seemingly impossible scenario each major character is faced with as the show ends. --Paul Tonks

Andromeda..... Folks, You Get So Much For Your Money Here. I Bought This Huge Collection At Best Buys For $44.00 And What A Deal That Was. You Get 10 Disc's On The First Season, With 22 Episodes And Tons Of Extra's. I'm A Huge Fan Of Star Trek, But Folks This Is (If I Must Say....) Better Than Star Trek. Some People Think Kevin Sorbo Is Still Hercules, But Since I Never Really Watched Hercules, I Must Say He Is Awesome As Commonwealth, Captain Dylan Hunt (Captain Of The Andromeda). If Some Of You Are Going To Argue That Star Trek Is Better (Sit Down And Relax Trekkies), Andromeda's 1st Season Is Probably More Advantanced Than Season 5 Or 6 Of Next Generation. I Mean This Is Still Gene Roddenberry's Work People. The Andromeda Itself Is Amazing (It's A Real Spaceship). Here Is A Break Down Of What You Get For $45 Compared To The $80 To $100 For A Star Trek Next Generation Series (I Love Star Trek, Don't Get Me Wrong, But The Trekkies, Need To Be More Open Minded And Enjoy Other Shows Like Andromeda).

Striving To Rebuild The Systems Commonwealth, Captain Dylan Hunt And His Crew Journey To Distant Worlds Aboard The Advanced Starship, Andromeda Ascendant. Enemies Abound At Every Turn, From The Treacherous Nietzscheans To Dreaded Magog. What Began As A Dream Has Now Become A Necessity. Will Courage Be Enough???? Fantastic

Andromeda is a hugley underated sci-fi show, and a personal favorite of mine. Ok, the later seasons (4 and 5) are downhill, but season 1-3, for the most part, are absolutly great.

Andromedas best feature? Its fantastic characters.

Andromeda has some of the best characters in sci-fi, and each character is very interesting, with deep pasts and brilliant personalities. Be it the gorgeous and very mysterious trance gemini, or Dylans heroic character, you just have to like them all. Andromeda certainly has a brilliant cast. Ontop of this, the sci-fi elements, such as there take on slip-stream, are great, and the ship looks fantastic.

Season 1 also has some of the best written episodes, such as
"06 : Angel Dark, Demon Bright" and
"03 : The day of lighting".

Andromeda does have some cheesy make-up effects, and some even cheesier fight scenes, but to be honest you wouldent have it any other way. The corney one liners and the over-the-top effects are all part of andromedas charm.

The episodes are full of clever writing and little hints to future seasons, for example
    *BIG SPOILER*
Trance being an avatar of a sun is hinted all the way throughout season 1.
    *END SPOILER*

Any true Sci-Fi fan owes it to themselves to check out Season 1 of Drommie, it truly is a gem, Hugly underated...

A waste of a good premise

This show has really bad acting, hilarious special effects and dialogue so bad that you think it was written by a fourteen-year-old. The premise for the show is not bad, but it is completely wasted here.

Syndication TV production. Rather a big title with not much to it. The shows are genreally shot on alightly larger budgets then most regualer network shows are, put on the air at different days of the weeks and generally have no network to answer for. Not much difference in show quality. The stories are genreally not very good and the acting always seems medicore at best. Kevin Sorbo is actually not bad in this role, a now regular guest star at comic book conventions. He is not a bad actor and this show actually gives him a change to be a bit more three dimensional. But the fellow cast members have no such luck while the effects work looks so CGish for the small screen. More Info about this DVD

Andromeda - Season 4 Collection DVD

Like season 3, season 4 also had a few bad episodes that were very confusing. There was an overuse of clips of previous episodes as a storytelling device, and some shows, like the first episode, had deus-ex-machina endings that came out of nowhere. The season gets better as it goes, with many of the finest episodes ("Trusting the Gordian Maze", "Time out of Mind") on the last disk. The final episode is very touching, and would have been a fine ending to the series if there was no season 5.

In the first two years Tyr served as the realist/anarchist foil to Dylan's idealism/community building. In season 4 Dylan was more the Hercules-style adventurer and moralist. To serve as a partner, Telemachus Rhade was added as a regular. While a Nietzschean, he was multi-faceted and... More Info about this DVD

I have read a lot of negetive reviews about the shorter version of the episode "Threads" being on this set rather than the longer more boring version. I just picked up the set and have only watched the episode "Threads" (I watched the season when it aired). I thought the shorter version was better and quicker to get to the point, there was a lot of padding in the longer version. Although I don't agree with MGM's Decision to not to put the broadcast version on the DVD, I'm glad they didn't. I don't think I will trade in my set to get the longer version. Farscape - The Peacekeeper Wars DVD

Created at least in part due to popular demand, Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars will provide some closure to fans who were dismayed by the demise of the popular science fiction television show in 2003 and campaigned mightily to bring it back. Indeed, this miniseries (originally broadcast over two nights on the Sci-Fi Channel) will likely appeal primarily to the Farscape faithful, as the somewhat convoluted storyline may prove baffling to the uninitiated.

A brief bit of backstory explains how John Crichton, an astronaut from Earth, went through a wormhole and ended up on Moya, a living spaceship, with a motley group of aliens, including D'Argo (Anthony Simcoe), Chiana (Gigi Edgley), various puppet characters (designed by the Jim Henson Company), and Aeryn... Battlestar Galactica (2003 Miniseries) DVD

Despite voluminous protest and nitpicking criticism from loyal fans of the original 1978-80 TV series, the 2003 version of Battlestar Galactica turned out surprisingly well for viewers with a tolerance for change. Originally broadcast on the Sci-Fi Channel in December 2003 and conceived by Star Trek: The Next Generation alumnus Ronald D. Moore as the pilot episode for a "reimagined" TV series, this four-hour "miniseries" reprises the basic premise of the original show while giving a major overhaul (including some changes in gender) to several characters and plot elements. Gone are the flowing robes, disco-era hairstyles, and mock-Egyptian fighter helmets, and thankfully there's not a fluffy "daggit" in sight... at least, not yet. Also missing are the "chrome toaster" Cylons,... More Info about this DVD
