  • DVD Lennon Legend - The Very Best of John Lennon

The late John Lennon's life and work are plainly visible in this stirring collection of short films and music videos, some very familiar while others, produced posthumously, will be new to many viewers. The set includes the classic "Imagine" clip, which begins with a haunting scene of John and Yoko walking through an early morning fog and concludes with Lennon's performance in an all-white room. More rare is a Top of the Pops live performance of "Instant Karma" and a wonderful film accompanying "Mind Games," in which a solo Lennon clowns around Central Park, thrilling passersby, playing with kids, and dancing. "Woman" is a montage of the last days and hours of Lennon's life, while "Watching the Wheels" is a compilation of home movie footage from the star's semi-reclusive Dakota years. Extras include a live "Slippin' and Slidin'," and a startling bit of "Julia" absentmindedly picked on guitar. --Tom Keogh

    Beautiful DVD

This DVD amazed me. Beautiful music and Beautiful film footage synchronized very professionally. If you have the CD version (Lennon Legend... CD)of this music; You'll enjoy the DVD version (Lennon Legend...(DVD).

    A superstar...well right you are!

This is one of the best music DVD's i've seen. Being a huge John lennon fan, this was the first time I ever saw his Top of the Pops performance of "Instant Karma". I was disappointed thought when I heard "Cold Turkey". I used to have the entire Live in NY concert on VHS and i thought the live performance was wicked but why they altered it is beyond me. They also altered "Stand by Me" which I thought was really great when he performed it live. The "Imagine" videoclip is, as always, a classic. The "Mind Games" video really stood out in my mind. It's got great footage of John strolling around Central Park and attending a Sgt. Pepper performance. "Woman" and "Mother" are perhaps the saddest two videoclips, not only because of the songs themselves, but they also use the images to convey the tragedy of John's death. Overall this is a must have for any John Lennon fan, and it's got some great special features, including a bunch of Lennon's artwork, old videoclips of him and Yoko, and a couple of live performances.

    Some more ersatz observations

...To add to all the remarks about overdubs and so on, I notice the grain on the headstock of the 1958 325 Rickenbacker does not match that shown in Andy Babiuk's "Beatles Gear". Since the one in "Beatles Gear" has the serial number V81, I believe Andy's photo shows the original guitar. I suspect these are just props for the video.

Putting Epstein in the "Mama" video is, I think, cheeky and hints at Yoko's beliefs regarding their relationship.

But even so, on the one hand I really enjoy this set of videos, but I agree with everyone it's "Ono, too much Yoko", so a grain of salt is required when one feels the heart strings being tugged during scenes of the happy couple.

    A Concert for George DVD

Exceptionally moving but not the least bit sentimental, Concert for George is a splendid tribute to the late George Harrison, whose contributions to the Beatles were so often hidden in the long shadows of John Lennon and Paul McCartney. A year to the day after Harrison's November 29, 2001 death, Eric Clapton assembled some musicians--people who had played with Harrison and known him intimately, including McCartney, Ringo Starr, and Tom Petty--to perform his music at London's Royal Albert Hall. They take on not just the predictable ("My Sweet Lord" and "Something," beautifully sung by Billy Preston and Sir Paul, respectively), but also lesser-known fare like "Old Brown Shoe" and "Beware of Darkness," all to superbly empathetic effect. But the tune most likely to make you misty-eyed... More Info about this DVD

Gimme Some Truth - The Making of John Lennon's "Imagine" DVD

An instant classic when released in September 1971, John Lennon's Imagine was the ex-Beatle's solo masterpiece, and its musical legacy is matched here by priceless footage of Lennon's creative process, independently edited from original 16-millimeter footage by producer-director Andrew Solt with the hands-off approval of Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono. Incorporating footage from John and Yoko's original film Imagine (clips of which were previously included in the 1988 documentary Imagine: John Lennon), Gimme Some Truth presents Lennon, Ono, coproducer Phil Spector, and a host of gifted musicians in a fluid context of conflict, community, and craftsmanship. Bearing witness to every stage of the recording process, this 63-minute documentary succeeds as a visual diary,... More Info about this DVD

    The Beatles Anthology DVD

Initially broadcast as a TV miniseries to go with the series of three Anthology double-CD albums, this set of eight documentary tapes has the heft and scope of one of Ken Burns's expansive projects. Still, unless you are either a historian or a truly committed fan, you'll find yourself with way more material--particularly about the Beatles' early lives as lads in Liverpool--than you'll want to watch. The documentary material is copious, including early performance films and tapes, at the point before they found their true voices. The actual Beatlemania years--beginning in 1963 and concluding in 1970--feature extensive performance films, as well as home movies and archival material. The best parts, of course, are the interviews with the Beatles themselves, who produced the... More Info about this DVD

    Inside John Lennon (Unauthorized) DVD

There's no shortage of redundant documentaries about the life and artistry of John Lennon, but the 80-minute, unauthorized Inside John Lennon manages to cover the same old ground in a refreshing, thoroughly captivating way. The secret: a streamlined production making crisp use of file footage, film clips, and stills that haven't been over-exploited, an unsentimental tone, and an army of interviewees who knew Lennon in ways we don't often hear about. Among the latter are Tony Sheridan, for whom the early Beatles acted as a backup band; various members of Lennon's pre-Beatles group, the Quarrymen; Apple general manager Alistair Taylor; and Julia Baird, Lennon's sister. Choice audio quotes from Paul McCartney and George Martin are pure gold. Though the film covers familiar, major... More Info about this DVD

The Beatles - The First U.S. Visit DVD

Any fan of Richard Lester's A Hard Day's Night won't want to miss the documentary The Beatles: The First U.S. Visit by Albert and David Maysles. The Maysles brothers were given extraordinary access to the Beatles during their first trip to the U.S., in February 1964, for several concerts and their seminal first appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show. Like Hard Day's Night, which came out later that year, this film (also known as What's Happening! The Beatles in the U.S.A.) shows lots of spontaneous cheekiness with the press and fans; the Beatles' wide-eyed bemusement at the hysteria they caused; as much cutting up as a tiny hotel room allows; and even specific scenes--goofing off on a commuter train, mod dancing in a nightclub--that would later...
