DVD The Medallion
The inspired pairing of Jackie Chan and British comedian Lee Evans (Funny Bones) gives The Medallion some extra oomph. Hong Kong agent Eddie Yang (Chan) flies to Ireland to track down a very bad guy named Snakehead (Julian Sands, Warlock, exuding his dependable oily menace) who has kidnapped a young boy with the power of life and death. When Eddie dies protecting the boy, the boy resurrects him with a magical medallion--and when Eddie comes back, he's got supernatural powers, much to the befuddlement of his former partner, Arthur (Evans). Along for the ride is Eddie's old flame, Nicole (Claire Forlani, Mystery Men), wearing tight outfits and delivering high kicks. Chan has lost the astonishing elasticity of his youth, but he's still spry enough pull some dazzling moves, and Evans is just amazingly funny. So bad, it makes an hour and a half seem like an eternity.
This movie is bad, bad, bad. It has no plot, no acting and no character development. I give it two stars for two basic reasons, special effects (seamlessly woven into the action and paying homage to old martial arts movies) and humor (Lee Evans's performance is hilarious).
A Hong Kong detective (Jackie Chan) is investigating a well-known but mysterious international smuggler (Julian Sands) when he discovers that the smuggler is after an ancient magical medallion that has the ability to resurrect people and give them eternal life. The chosen keeper of the medallion, a kid, is kidnapped and taken to Dublin where the smuggler will use him to unleash the power of the medallion. The detective follows the trail and recruits the help of two Interpol agents, an old love (Claire Forlani) and a clumsy and less than courageous partner (Lee Evans). Trying to save the kid, the detective gets killed and resurrected, with superhuman powers and eternal life added for bonus. Then the battle for good and evil ensues.
This movie is boring, slow moving, very badly acted (although is cast with good leads) and not entertaining at all. The characters are weak and ridiculous, and overall the movie's quality is below most past Jackie Chan's movies.
Don't waste your time and money.
Forgettable
Jackie Chan has really cranked out a lot of movies and I have found some of them quite entertaining with action packed fight scenes, good stories, great stunts, and Chan's self deprecating sense of humor. This is not one of them.
There is not much to the plot - Chan is a Hong Kong cop facing off against a super criminal "Snakehead". Snakehead is after a medallion that is possessed by a kid. The medallion gives people special powers. Snakehead kidnaps the kid and Chan is in the hunt to save the kid and keep the medallion out of Snakehead's hands.
Unfortunately, the plot is awful and makes little sense. The fight scenes are not very good. The movie essentially breaks down into a not very interesting series of vignettes that I could never decide whether they were supposed to be funny, scary, thrilling - they were just plan dumb.
Chan would be better served to make fewer, higher quality movies than to churn out forgettable fare like The Medallion.
Not one of jackies best.
Maybe it is because I love jackie's earlier movies which he surpassed himself in, but I was very disappointed with this film. Okay, so it's funny in parts but having said this that's about it. I realise that jackie is trying different things in his new films, but for me I preferred the original hong kong movies. I really never thought I would ever give a JC movie 3 stars, but I have to be honest and do so. Sorry jackie. But I am still an avid fan of yours.
Samuel L. The heroes of 1899 are brought to life with the help of some expensive special effects in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. From the pages of Victorian literature come Captain Nemo, Dr. Jekyll (and his alter ego Mr. Hyde), Dorian Gray, Tom Sawyer, an Invisible Man, Mina Harker (from Dracula), and the hunter Allan Quatermain (Sean Connery), all brought together to combat an evil megalomaniac out to conquer the world. Partly inspired by 1948's The Big Clock and its nominal 1987 remake No Way Out, the Denzel Washington thriller Out of Time is quite enjoyable if you ignore its implausible plotting. Like those earlier films, this reunion of Washington and his Devil in a Blue Dress director Carl Franklin is about a man--in this case the police chief (Washington) of sleepy Banyan Key, Florida--who falls into a trap set by others, sinks into legal quicksand of his own making, and must race the clock to extricate himself from a series of incriminating setbacks.
