DVD B.A.P.S.
What was director Robert Townsend thinking? His movies, such as The Five Heartbeats and The Hollywood Shuffle, are sweet, enjoyable little pictures. But this "comedy" about two flashy Georgia women hoping to find money and men in Los Angeles is stereotypical, unfunny, embarrassing, and boring. Halle Berry and newcomer Natalie Desselle are trapped in pitiful roles playing against the distinguished but miscast Martin Landau and a wasted Ian Richardson. B.A.P.S., by the way, stands for black American princesses. There are better urban comedies out there, the badly named Booty Call for one. --Rochelle O'Gorman
In the movie B.A.P.S Nisi and Mickey move to L.A. to become dancers. After the audition, Isaac, a fake producer, offered them 50,000 dollars to be dancers. Instead, Nisi and Mickey scam a dying millionaire, Mr. Blakemore.
B.A.P.S is filled with comedy and mischief. An example of comedy would be when Mickey and Nisi were on the airplane talking and Mickey's hair hit the old man next to her eye. An example of mischief would be when Antonio tried to rob Mr. Blakemore while he was in bed asleep.
B.A.P.S brings you to your feet begging for an encore.
Great Movie
All i have to say is this movie is one of a kind..lol..its great!!!
a pleasant suprise
I was very suprised when I saw this film on cable some years ago. The storyline is not that predictable and there are plenty of laughs. I remember seeing Roger Ebert and the late Gene Siskel skewering this film particularly Halle Berry for portraying black women in a "negative manner". I had to disagree with their review totally. Check it out.
I believe that this is a very funny film. Chappelle(sp?), Davidson, Pinkett-Smith. This is a very peaceful film because all the shots are done at night.
I can't remember much except for the chicken scene and the restaurant. It's almost as if I was sleeping, but watching the movie.
Films at night seem to bring peace to me for some reason. This one and Men At Work(Charlie Sheen and Emelio Esteves).
Well, to close, I wanted to say both of these movies are great, they seem to hit the right nerve for comedy.
Sprung is the story of 4 friends Clyde (Joe Torry), Adina (Paula Jai Parker), Brandy (Tisha Campbell) and Montel (Rusty Cundieff) . Clyde and Adina who are both playas hook up immediately and Adina finds out that Clyde isn't the rich man she thought he was and hilarity ensues (check the scene with Clyde riding on top of Adina's car in only his jockey underwear). Meanwhile against Clyde and Adina's wishes, Brandy and Montel fall in love and are truly happy. Clyde and Adina conspire to break up their friends's happy relationship, accusing the twosome of being "Sprung". Overall this is a very sweet romance and it also very funny. I've worn out my video and recently purchased this on DVD and I"m quite happy I did and I think you should get it too! Eddie Murphy makes a graceless debut as a romantic lead in this comedy from Reginald Hudlin. Murphy stars as a ladies man for whom the tables turn when he suddenly finds himself taken for granted by a lover (Robin Givens). Meanwhile, the platonic friend (Halle Berry) whom Murphy regularly visits is obviously--to the viewer, anyway--the woman he's supposed to be with. The absurdly long film is filled out with some fairly crude humor, such as the sight of Geoffrey Holder taking a whiff of Grace Jones's underwear. Yet Hudlin and Murphy also strain for a veneer of elegance and sophistication. Wanting to play it both ways, they end up with nothing. But there are several good sequences where Murphy is quite funny just being Murphy, such as his explanation to Berry of how you can tell which... Jessica Lange is a social worker who falls for an abandoned newborn and breaks all the rules by bringing him home. Halle Berry is the homeless druggie who dumped the baby. One of the film's best attributes is that it reveals everyone's perspective, though much of the story is told from Berry's point of view. Strung out on crack, Berry's character thinks nothing of hiding her baby in a cardboard box near a dumpster before going off for a fix. We watch Berry painfully pull herself up out of the gutter and make a life for herself. She embraces decency and sobriety and becomes the person she might have always been had her childhood been different. After Lange and her amiable spouse (David Strathairn) have formed strong family ties with this difficult child, they find themselves fighting to...
