DVD Bill Maher - Victory Begins at Home
Common sense and comedy make excellent bedfellows in Victory Begins at Home, comedian Bill Maher's scathing one-hour show taped on Broadway and first broadcast on HBO in July 2003. "Comedian" seems hardly adequate in defining Maher, who functions as political analyst, voice of conscience, court jester, social critic, and tireless advocate of decency, honesty, and, yes, even patriotism (unless you're a staunch conservative, in which case Maher's an insufferable moron, but that's your problem, not his). Indeed, Victory will ultimately serve as a time-capsule summary of political, personal, and religious absurdity in the age of George W. Bush, Middle East turmoil, and rampant terrorism, and after honing his edge on TV's late, great Politically Incorrect, who better than Maher to comment on the madness? Take this, for example: "The true axis of evil in America is the genius of our marketing combined with the stupidity of our people." Which is to say, Maher's a fearless equal-opportunity offender, and nobody gets off the hook easily. Whether he's excoriating the hypocrisy of politicians and priests, illegal vs. prescription drugs, our "feminized" society, or the good reason you should never buy diamonds, Maher's is a voice of angry, caring reason, and we're better off with him (and his profanely provocative freedom of speech) than without him. --Jeff Shannon
Review(s): DVD Bill Maher - Victory Begins at Home
Hilarious
Very funny (and at times challenging) stand up comedy. Riffing on politics and social commentary, Maher manages to step on toes and tip the sacred cows of the self righteous on both the right and the left. Recommended for any thinking American.
huh?
who gave this performance a crappy review? there isnt anything he said that was unreasonable or unamerican. One person reviewed the dvd but instead of speaking on the dvd he insisted on bashing bill maher and his tv show. There isnt any liberal or democratic bias on this dvd. He offers solutions that anyone can do.
How Does He Keep Getting Shows?
I've seen "Politically Incorrect," I've seen his stand-up, I've seen "Real Time" on HBO...how does Bill Maher keep getting shows?
He's not funny (his comedian guests run circles around him), he's preening and arrogant, he's rude and obnoxious to guests he doesn't like (which is anyone right of fellow gasbag Michael Moore). My soap dish has more depth. And he cries like a girl whenever he gets cancelled, whimpering about First Amendment or something (yeah, Bill, it's a Constitutional crisis if you can't tell your 9-11 or Iraqi beheading jokes).
I don't think I'd be so repulsed by Maher if he'd just stop acting like the smartest, funniest guy on the planet...but he does.
The wit and wisdom of Bill Maher are on display in this hour-long performance, recorded in San Francisco in 2000. Of course, just how witty and wise Maher appears will depend on one's socio-political stance. Outspoken if not outrageously controversial (this gig preceded his infamous remark on his Politically Incorrect show that the 9/11 hijackers were "not cowardly"), Maher espouses views on sex, the war on drugs, religion, and other popular (and, let's face it, easy) targets that are unlikely to endear him to, say, residents of most "red states." Still, there is one opinion that this self-proclaimed Libertarian and his conservative counterparts might well share--namely, that big government is decidedly not a beautiful thing. Indeed, Maher's point is that we need to "be more... More Info about this DVD Director(s): Keith Truesdell DVD Release Date: Released the 05 April 2005 Usually ships in 24 hours

"I don't hate America," comedian Bill Maher declares during I'm Swiss, recorded in March 2005 in Portland, OR. "I love America. (But) I'm embarrassed." And there we have not only the source of the title (his discomfiture, he jokes, has led him to pretend he's from another country) but also the crux of Maher's overall presentation on this, his third DVD taken from a program that was first shown on HBO. Maher's tendency toward smugness and superiority regularly provoke the wrath of his opponents on the far right. But despite his disingenuous claims to the contrary ("I'm not making this up, I'm just reporting," or "I'm not being partisan"), he certainly can't be accused of not having a point of view. His targets are many in I'm Swiss, ranging from reality TV to Cialis ("the... The Daily Show with Jon Stewart is so laugh-out-loud funny that Indecision 2004--which could have been a dated recap of a time many would rather forget--is instead a hilarious time capsule of the follies and foibles of the 2004 presidential election. What also helps is that many of the issues being lampooned, such as the Iraq war, are still in the news in 2005. The 10 episodes included in the three-disc set are the four reporting on the Democratic National Convention, the four from the Republican National Convention, the episode following the first Bush-Kerry debate, and the hourlong election-night episode, subtitled "Prelude to a Recount." The Daily Show mimics the format of a news program, with Stewart as the anchor and his troupe of "senior...
