    Another Rodgers & Hart Gem!

Could this be the most innovative musical of all time? Certainly no one can surpass Rodgers & Hart at their best. What a treat!

    cd Annette Hanshaw

Good cd content but there were flaws in the recording (stalling out with repetitive sound in two or three places)

    Love Me Tonight

This charmer features sparkling dialogue and a breathtaking Rodgers & Hart score, including "Lover", "Mimi", and my own favorite, "Isn't it Romantic?" The romantic leads are terrific, and a colorful supporting cast including Charlie Ruggles, Myrna Loy, and C. Aubrey Smith, all keep the soufflé-light story from falling. Directed by Rouben Mamoulian in the style of Ernst Lubitsch, this is often referred to as the finest Lubitsch picture Lubtisch never made. In any event, one of the great early romantic musicals.

George Stevens - D-Day to Berlin DVD

Some of the most vivid, indelible images of World War II can be found in George Stevens: D-Day to Berlin. Along with an Army-enlisted band of Hollywood veterans known as "The Stevens Irregulars" (including cameramen Joseph Biroc and William Mellor, screenwriter Ivan Moffat, novelist Irwin Shaw, and others), the great director of Gunga Din traveled from the shores of Normandy to the ruins of occupied Berlin, capturing pivotal episodes of history on home-movie magazines of Kodak color film, which his son later crafted into this riveting 46-minute documentary. The narration by Stevens Jr. is rather listless, and other voiceover contributors from the "Irregular" crew are not specifically identified, but their visual account speaks for itself, with unforgettable images of... The Palm Beach Story DVD

Among the earliest writers to set his sights on the director's chair, Preston Sturges brought a frank, unsentimental view of the war between the sexes to his mid-'40s features that exemplify his style, as demonstrated in this prescient 1942 gem. Architect Tom Jeffers (Joel McCrea) and his wife, Gerry (Claudette Colbert), further refine the archetypal Sturges couple--the male embodying strength, idealism, and a certain naivete, the female ultimately stronger, smarter, and (as revealed early on in an astonishing speech by Colbert) clearer-eyed and more pragmatic about the subtext of sex. This giddy shaggy-dog story follows the couple's split, and Gerry's subsequent flight to Palm Beach. This head-snapping frolic is paced by double-entendres and lampooning looks at the very rich, with... More Info about this DVD

    Applause DVD

HELEN MORGAN [looking somewhat like Goldie Hawn in 'Death Becomes Her' - before the transformation] shines as the burning out Star [somewhat along the lines of a weaker Madame Rose - who made it to burlesque - but not Broadway] - tied to 'heel' Fuller Mellish Jr. with saintly daughter [Joan Peers]- who brings new meaning to 'the Show Must Go On!' - quite a transformation for this very, very talented gal [strikingly like Carrie Fisher]- Henry Wadsworth as Tony, the Young Sailor brings a breath of wholesome air to this shade tale of burlesque on the skids - brilliantly envisioned and conceived by ROUBEN MAMOULIAN - who certainly went on to bigger, bigger and better things - BUT this one's a real find.

PITY that the existing copy of somewhat damaged [like most of the cast ..... ] but still... More Info about this DVD

    Laura DVD

This silky smooth film noir pits gruff police detective Dana Andrews, stiff and blunt in his street-bred manners, against a cultured columnist and acidic wit (Clifton Webb at his prissiest) in a battle of wits during a murder investigation. The cop is a romantic hiding under a hard-boiled exterior who falls in love with the beautiful victim through the portrait that hangs in her apartment. Gene Tierney, whose heart-shaped face mixes the exotic with the girl next door, brings the poise and calm of a model to her role as the object of every man's gaze and the target of a killer. Laura, handsomely shot in dreamy black and white, is the first and best of Otto Preminger's cool, controlled murder mysteries. In the gritty world of film noir it remains the most refined and elegant example... More Info about this DVD
