  • DVD Freddy vs. Jason (New Line Platinum Series)

After 11 years in development hell and screenplay drafts by 13 different writers, the long-awaited smackdown of Freddy vs. Jason finally arrives. After making their respective debuts in Friday the 13th (1980) and A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), the hockey-masked killer Jason Voorhees (Ken Kirzinger, replacing long-time Jason performer Kane Hodder) and razor-gloved Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) square off in a slasher-franchise combo-deal that only their most devoted fans will appreciate; turns out this is a lightweight match in which nobody wins. It's an average entry in the histories of these horror icons, comparable to half of their previous sequels, and Bride of Chucky director Ronny Yu satisfies purists with plenty of gushing blood and mayhem when Freddy recruits Jason to slice 'n' dice the ill-fated teens who've forgotten Freddy's once-formidable reign of terror. While it logically connects the gruesome legacies of Nightmare's Elm Street and Friday's Camp Crystal Lake, this horror hybrid is shockingly uninspired. It briefly peaks when Freddy gives the unconscious Jason a dream-world pummeling, but their ultimate showdown's a draw. In the immortal words of Peggy Lee, is that all there is? --Jeff Shannon

Review(s): DVD Freddy vs. Jason (New Line Platinum Series)
Pretty good movie for fans of the "slasher genre"

After going on the internet and watching the trailer I couldn't wait to see the movie. Now after seeing the finished product it wasn't as good as I thought it would be, but it's still worth watching. The basic plot is as follows, Elm street slasher freddy krueger can no longer return to his killing spree due to the fact that the residents of springwoods have forgotten about him and erased all records and evidence of his murderous rampage, without the memories of what had occured the residents of springwoods no longer feel any fear of freddy and without fear. freddy is powerless, trapped in limbo, essentially a prisoner with a life sentence who spends his time plotting a vengeance which will never come to pass. Until Freddy finds a way to make them remember him. And in comes undead murderer Jason vorhees, the perfect mindless killing machine for freddy's plans. Since jasons machete is real weather you've heard of him or not Freddy uses his power over peoples dreams to revive jason (yes apparently jason never really did go to hell instead he was jut put to sleep) and sicks the mindless murderer on the unsuspecing residents of springwoods. Jason does what he was told and he does it well but unfcortunately for freddy jason enjoys killing a little to much, so much in fact that when freddy's ready to return to his "children" jason refuses to step aside. Freddy decides that it's finally time to "Put this bad dog to sleep, permanently!" But jason isn't going down without a fight and neither are the kids of springwood who have a plan that just might get rid of their, and jason's problem, once and for all. This may sound stupid but I felt an obligation to mention the plot because I was surprised that amidst all the bloody and gory goodness they actually took the time to make a plot, and add a little romantic subplot to act as the cherry on top of a good milkshake. Admittedly it wasn't the most complex plot but still it was there (which was a nice surprise after watching the extremely stupid eigth friday film Jason takes manhattan). I've also heard a lot of complaints about bad acting but if you honestly expected some oscar winning performances from a slasher flick seek mental help immediately. The characters all play off of one stereotype or another and your likely to tell from the minute they appear on screen which ones are the victims, the foolish heroes, and the survivors but once again this being a slasher flick in every since of the word thats to be expected. As for the soundtrack its pretty decent being exciting when it needs to be moody when it needs to be and sometimes, combined with the images on screen, downright creepy. The movie also did a good job of combining the two franchises in a credible way as well as entering into the pasts of the two characters showing us more of Jasons love for his mom as well as entering into Freddy's slasher history. However were the movie really delivers is in the fight seen between freddy and Jason which clearly shows us the strengths and weaknesses of both killers, while being long enougth to be worth the wait, but short enough to keep your interest. While the movie isn't one of those film classics if you're a fan of the slasher genre give it a shot, you won't be dissapointed.

So glad they got it right!!!!

When the official word came out that there would be a Freddy Vs. Jason film, I was so worried that they would not be able to come up with a plausible story line. I could not have imagined a better way for this movie to take place. Kudos to the director, producers, writers and actors. THE BEST VS. MOVIE OF ALL TIME!!!!! If you have not seen this movie--see it now. If you do not own this movie---buy it now. Both Freddy and Jason are allowed to shine and get their licks in. Word of warning---It's a bloodbath baby!!!!

    That Goalie was piss*d!

"F v. J" was the long-awaited showdown between the two iconic horror-movie legends of the last 25 years, hockey-masked Crystal Lake slasher Jason Voorhees, and the extra-crispy Springwood Slasher, Freddy Krueger. The depth to which these two very different psychopathic revenants have penetrated the popular consciousness made a head-up battle between them inevitable. It would not be an exaggeration to say that they have replaced Dracula and Frankenstein as the staple villains of the modern era. Who didn't wanna see 'em go fifteen rounds for a pot of winner kills all?

I have to start by saying that if you're looking for creeps, "F v. J" isn't your bag. The movie isn't scary. How can it be? Jason scared us for about four films, afterwhich we started to root for him, so dumb and deserving of death were the horny camp counselors, bumbling deputy sheriffs, and assorted grab-bag of punks, bikers, doctors, parents, and homeless people who were stupid enough not to give Crystal Lake a wide berth. Freddy also scared the bejeezus out of me.....in 1985, when I saw the original "Elm Street." He also gave me a moderate case of the creeps in his third sequel, the "Dream Warriors," but basically, after the first flick I just tuned in to hear his wisecracks.

So, this isn't a horror film, exactly. It's more a sort of demonic pay-per-view superfight. We clear on that? Good, 'cause I'm writing this at Halloweentime and if you're looking for scary rentals to get your honey cuddling up to you on the couch, this won't do. It's more like an episode of "The Ultimate Fighter."

The plot, which is really just an excuse for mayhem, is this: Freddy's undead reign of terror in Springwood, Illinois has been brought to a halt by virtue of the fact that the town fathers have wiped out his memory, and hence his ability to live off the fear he inspires in children. They did this by drugging out anyone who knew who he was, and destroying all records of his murders. This irritates Messr. Krueger, who wanders the depths of hell, plotting a way to become 'relevant' again.

His deep-fried brain comes up with the idea to manipulate killing machine Jason Voorhees into doing his wetwork for him. Freddy lives in a dream-world, but Jason's machete is effective whether you believe in him or not. Fred tricks Jason into chopping up some Springwood kids in the hopes of reviving their memories of his (Freddy's) bad old days and thus restoring his power.

Like all of Freddy's schemes, this one goes awry. Instead of offing the occasional teen who wants to smoke pot, drink beer and engage in premarital sex, Jason goes nuts and starts hacking up Springwood's teen population like he's at an all-you-can-kill buffet. Freddy doesn't like having meat taken out of his jaws, and decides it's time, in his words, to put the bad dog to sleep. That, of course, is easier said than done, and leads to the big Holyfield - Bowe showdown between the two. The payoff takes a while to get to, but it's worth the wait.

Against this backdrop is the usual parade of teen slasher fodder, including the following:

Troubled male lead with nutjob sidekick who has none, zero, zip chance of reaching final credits
    Virginal but oh-so-luscious female lead
Extremely nubile girl who goes swimming naked at Crystal Lake
Stoner who takes extremely ill-timed "jay break"
Nerd whose heroism wins heart of hottie
Foul-mouthed, cigarette-smoking, hard-drinking trampy girl with deadmeat written all over her (ditto for boyfriend)
Token black character written in insulting "playa" sterotype

From a technical standpoint the film is very professionally done -- much moreso than most F or J outings. There is a nice blend of the theme musics from both series as well as respectful nods to the mythologies which surround both characters. Even Jason's hateful old hag of a mother makes an appearance, and we finally get to see Freddy before cooking, i.e. with his skin attached. The film has an unusual amount of nudity and gore, which should please those who got tired of the watered-down, "PG in R-rated clothing" horror entries during the latter part of the 1980s.

Balancing this is almost uniformly bad acting, some really bad writing (occasionally broken by funny wisecracks, the fact that the female lead, Monica Keena, never delivers her considerable goods (D'oh!) and finally that neither Freddy nor Jason has the ability to scare us anymore; but like I said, this isn't about horror, it's about carnage, and on that score it delivers.

    Jason X DVD

Nine years after his so-called Final Friday, hockey-masked slasher Jason Voorhees returns in Jason X, and fans of the long-running Friday the 13th series won't be disappointed. Veteran stuntman Kane Hodder returns to the titular role that made him infamous, and rookie director James Isaac gets off to a fine start by killing off his mentor, director David Cronenberg, in a deliciously ill-fated cameo. Soon Jason is cryogenically suspended along with the comely scientist (Lexa Doig, from TV's Andromeda) who warned of his invincibility; by the time a sexy spaceship crew revives them in the year 2455, "Earth 2" has replaced the now-uninhabitable Earth, and Jason proceeds to do hack victims with his trusty machete. Eventually he battles a sexy android, gets a... More Info about this DVD

Jason Goes to Hell - The Final Friday DVD

Blow mad killer Jason Voorhees to smithereens in the opening sequence of the movie? Sorry, folks, you have to do better than that. Jason's evil spirit finds its way into a series of host bodies, thus continuing the carnage at Crystal Lake, in Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday. Naturally, part 9 is not the final Friday the 13th movie (no big deal: part 4, you'll recall, was titled The Final Chapter). Jason confronts a long-lost sister at the lake, while the usual assortment of naked teens are dispatched. This one tries to vary the formula a bit but ends up with a story line every bit as nonsensical as those that came before. The final sequence tries to put Jason away for keeps and calls upon the demons of hell for support. The last shot is an outrageous joke, which... More Info about this DVD

The Nightmare on Elm Street Collection DVD

In the trinity of modern horror films, there's the father (Michael Myers of Halloween), the son (Jason of Friday the 13th fame, a knockoff), and the unholy spirit, Freddy Krueger of the Nightmare on Elm Street films. The spectral man who haunted the nightmares of unsuspecting teenagers with deadly consequences, Freddy (as played by Robert Englund) was a truly frightening bogeyman and icon for the '80s. Unlike the hockey-masked Jason, who dispatched horny teenagers with mechanical and monotonous ease (he never talked, never took off his mask), Freddy was a truly creative and diabolical villain, with a sadistic and blackly funny personality. The hallmarks of the Nightmare on Elm Street series were imaginatively gruesome suspense pieces, set in the overactive... More Info about this DVD

Friday the 13th - From Crystal Lake to Manhattan (8 Movies) DVD

Five discs gather the first eight movies in the Friday the 13th series, plus a batch of behind-the-scenes featurettes. You can track the rise, fall, and endless resurrections of Jason Voorhees, from the original 1980 film to Jason's self-kidding trip to the Big Apple. Horror fans eat up packages such as this, but there's something odd about the deluxe treatment for a series that spotlighted atrocious acting, pitiful production values, and inane storytelling.

You'll spot a few future "name" actors in various installments: Kevin Bacon is morbidly dispatched in the first one. But in general, the dominant focus is how to kill horny teenagers, most of whom have gathered at Camp Crystal Lake in the misguided belief that the curse of the impossible-to-kill Jason has worn off. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre DVD

The 2003 version of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre adheres to the pure and simple slasher movie formula: Introduce a gaggle of sexy young people, make vague gestures to distinguish them--Jessica Biel (Summer Catch) wants to get married and doesn't like pot, so she's our moral compass--then start hacking them to pieces one by one. The visual palette includes grimy crucified dolls, fly-specked pig carcasses, body parts floating in murky jars, a tobacco-chewing redneck sheriff, and many slender beams of sunlight cutting through dank, dusty interiors. The camera lovingly photographs Biel's tank-topped bosom and sculpted abs as she's running in terror from a bloated, chainsaw-wielding, human-skin-wearing maniac. This remake lacks the macabre comedy of the original; it's all about... More Info about this DVD
