Review(s): DVD The Devil Rides Out/Rasputin the Mad Monk
    Damaged?

All three reviews by the individual below--from Italy--complain about "damaged" DVDs, way too dang many of them. I encourage customers to ignore these writings as it seems she may be ordering DVDs for the wrong DVD region; in one case she writes that it plays "black" and that sure as heck sounds like the problem. Of course she might be putting these in her CD player too. I've ordered plenty of stuff from Amazon and if anything they arrive almost too well packed and totally undamaged. Sorry, I've been encountering customer service complaints, often really stupid ones, turning up in the review section a bit too much lately and it's really starting to annoy me.

Great CDs, a great combo, and lots of fun. The Devil Rides Out is a classic adaptation of a novel by a fellow named Wheatley or something--wrote a lot of stories in the 30s about Satan worshippers. The Rasputin film is just a hoot, as one might well imagine from Hammer. I miss this company and I wish they could reform to do campy stuff (their movies weren't campy when new) nowadays. There's plenty of hard-gore and shock out there now, I'd like to see something stylish and fun.

    Very Good

This movie above came in good condition, fortunately, however, several itens that I have ordered before this one came damaged, I have had many problems with Amazon com lately, unfortunately. I really would like to know why this is taking place, really. The collection called "Hammer Horror Collection" that has 6 movies came completely damaged, 100% damaged twice to me and when I ordered three of the movies separately (suggested by the represantive) "taste the blood of Dracula", "Dracula has risen from the grave" and "The Horror of Dracula", the three of them, even though they were sold separately, they came to me DAMAGED, I returned them and Amazon com decided to send me something for free here in Italy after all I went through, but, even the free purchases, one of movies, came DAMAGED, the movie that came damaged is called "The Hound of Baskerville" with Peter Cushing, it came damaged twice actually, now, I do not know what to substitue that one for, and besides I am in a different hotel now. I do not know WHY you are selling so many movies that are DAMAGED, NOT WORKING, with BLACK SCREEN, specially the one called "hammer horror collection" PLease analise and study this. THank you.

    Two Hammer classics

Rasputin, the Mad Monk is easily the lesser of the two films, but is still a minor classic by Hammer standards. Historical accuracy is secondary to suspense and thrills, as you would expect. Christopher Lee turns in one of his best performances in the title role.

The Devil Rides Out is one of Terence Fisher's finest films. It's an intense occult thriller, genuinely terrifying at times, and featuring another excellent performance from Lee, in an untypical role.

Frankenstein Created Woman/The Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires DVD

Frankenstein Created Woman is one of the better of Hammer's Frankenstein sequels, an efficient programmer that sees Peter Cushing's Baron trapping the soul of his guillotined assistant and putting it in the body of his disfigured girlfriend, only for the wronged boy to use her to kill those who really done the crime he was executed for. There's more build-up than payoff, but its very sedateness (indeed, almost cosiness) is part of the pleasure, and it's hard not to warm to the Baron's arrogance and aloofness, whether it be reading in the witness box or casually answering a policeman's "Do you take us for fools?" with a simple "Yes." Still, it is remarkable just how well preserved that severed head is after six months...

The Mummy's Shroud/The Plague of Zombies DVD

I haven't been able to see "The Mummy's Shroud" but I have seen "The Plague of the Zombies." It is an innovative and entertaining zombie film. A series of mysterious deaths and some strange activities in the old abandoned mines outside of town are all tied together in an insidious plot. Can the hero save the town and his headstrong daughter?

Fans of "The Evil Dead" movies will notice some shots that seem very familiar as the dead rise from their graves. More Info about this DVD

    The Lost Continent/The Reptile DVD

I first stayed up to watch the Lost Continent when I was a kid. Always a fan of Hammer films, The Lost Continent is probably my favourite of all. Repeated viewings since have done nothing to diminish the film, if anything they have enhanced it. It is difficult to put this film into any single genre, it probably falls under a combination of action/fantasy/horror/sci fi.
It is based on the Dennis Wheatley novel Uncharted Seas, although there are substantial and necessary plot revisions in the film.
The story is set on a rust bucket tramp steamer - the SS Corita, carrying an illegal cargo of high explosive, a dubious collection of passengers, and helmed by a moody, sarcastic captain - a typically strong performance from Eric Porter. Supported by a solid cast, this really makes... More Info about this DVD

Hammer Horror Series (Brides of Dracula / Curse of the Werewolf / Phantom of the Opera (1962) / Paranoiac / Kiss of the Vampire / Nightmare / Night Creatures / Evil of Frankenstein) DVD

"Hammer Horror Series" presents some of the studios best films from the early sixties period, though they might not be the most familiar to Hammer fans. A few, in fact, might come with baggage attached, but this collection dispells some of that baggage. In particular, Hammer's "Phantom of the Opera" has suffered more abuse over the years than any other of its films. The hard truth is, it's pretty good. The reason it has such a bum reputation might be because most people first saw it on television, which seriously impaired it. In it's proper aspect ratio, and with the extra scenes filmed for American TV left out, it's really pretty good. Not perfect, but pretty good. The biggest liability with the film are the horrendous opera sequences. "Evil of Frankenstein" has similarly been... More Info about this DVD

Four Sided Triangle/X The Unknown DVD

Anchor Bay Entertainment has begun releasing the lesser-known Hammer films in an economical 'two-fer' format, following behind MGM and their 'Midnight Movies' format. That's great news for those of us who haven't gotten around to purchasing these films individually, as they were originally offered, but bad news from those who have already bought the films when they were originally released to DVD in the single movie format at full price. The discs and special features offered though this set are the same as when they were offered in a single disc format, but now they are two for the price of one. I can't help but wonder if the original releases weren't selling very well, so Anchor Bay recovered them and re-released them in this more economical 'limited edition' sets. Who...
