DVD In the Cut (Unrated and Uncut Director's Edition)
Based on Susanna Moore's popular novel, In the Cut centers on Frannie (Meg Ryan), an emotionally stifled English teacher who gets steamy with sultry Malloy (Mark Ruffalo, You Can Count On Me), a cop who's investigating a series of brutal murders--but Frannie soon suspects that Malloy may be the killer. As a psychological thriller, In the Cut is heavier on psychology than thrills; the story is a skeleton that director Jane Campion (The Piano, An Angel at My Table) cloaks in one of the most nightmarish visions of urban life since Taxi Driver or Seven, accompanied by lots of explicit sex. The movie's dark tone will put some viewers off, but Ruffalo's effortless magnetism serves him well; no woman in the audience will question how quickly Ryan falls into bed with him. Also featuring Jennifer Jason Leigh and an uncredited Kevin Bacon. --Bret Fetzer

Everything You Know About Desire Is Dead Wrong!
Meg Ryan plays Manhattan English teacher Frankie Avery. When parts of a dismembered young woman are found in her back garden, Ryan is questioned by Detective Mark Ruffalo. Ruffalo asks Ryan out, and before long they're at it hot and heavy. But the day of the murder, Ryan was in the same bar as the victim, and witnessed, in the shadows, a man being fellated. That man had the same tattoo as Ruffalo, and Ryan begins to fear that her new lover is, at best, a liar. At worst...
In the Cut is gorgeously shot, turning Manhattan into a jagged, Gothic land of gold and brown and black. The frames pulse in and out of focus, emphasizing (some might say too obviously) the idea of how little one can trust one's eyes. The thing is, though, that in many ways Jane Campion's handsome film is essentially a high-class version of the erotic thrillers that populate cable TV, with some of the same problems. The thriller aspect moves at a ponderous pace, but the relationship's narrative arc is no better, taking forever to tell us not very much at all. As for the sex scenes, they aren't particularly torrid or interesting (though the oral sex scene that Ryan witnesses is very graphic, and fooled me into thinking it was hardcore until the commentary set me straight). Neither plot nor character driven, the film becomes an assembly of stunningly beautiful shots, but they aren't enough to sustain us for two hours.
Director/co-writer Jane Campion and producer Laurie Parker provide an interesting commentary, one that covers both the nuts-and-bolts aspect of the production and its thematic interests. That's about it as far as serious features are concerned. There's a mildly interesting, jaggedly edited featurette that provides definitions of the slang terms heard in the film, a standard-issue Makin-Of featurette, and trailers for In the Cut, The Missing, Sin and Trapped. The menu's main page, intro and transitions are animated and scored.
A fine film to look at, but finally a bit wearing to sit through. The performances by Ryan, Ruffalo and Jennifer Jason Leigh are fine, and the cinematography to die for, but its narrative is a too elliptical to grip.
Why such low reviews?
I cannot understand why this movie got such a low rating! This is actually one of my favorite movies. I love the surreal, almost dream-like quality of the film. There's also a raw edge to it that you don't see a lot of anymore in these types of films.
Yes, it is completely different from Meg Ryan's other more bubblier roles, but I think she did a wonderful job and was cast appropriately to play Frannie. Her and Mark Ruffalo's characters had such sexual chemistry, which is clearly evident in the sex scenes.
I gave this movie only four stars because it is a bit slow in some parts, and the ending? It is entirely different from the book! Other than that, I thought this was a wonderfully, beatifully shot and haunting film.
IN THE CUT
I ALWAYS KNEW MEG RYAN WAS BEAUTIFUL, BUT NOW I SEE SHE CAN BE EXTREMELY SEXY ALSO.GREAT MOVIE BECAUSE OF HER.

In terms of alluring female nudity, Swimming Pool shows a lot, but it's what remains concealed that gives this erotic thriller a potent, voyeuristic charge. With his Hitchcockian handling of secrets and lies, prolific French director François Ozon reunites with his Under the Sand star, Charlotte Rampling, to tell a seductive tale of murder and complicity, beginning when British mystery novelist Sarah Morton (Rampling) seeks peace and relaxation at her publisher's French villa, only to find his brash, sexually liberated daughter Julie (Ludivine Sagnier) arriving shortly thereafter to disrupt her solitary reverie. What begins as mutual annoyance turns into something more sinister and duplicitous, alternating between Julie's predatory sex with men and Sarah's observant,... A love letter to movies (and the French new wave of the 1960s in particular), Bernardo Bertolucci's The Dreamers starts with a 1968 riot outside of a Parisian movie palace then burrows into an insular love triangle. Matthew (Michael Pitt, Hedwig and the Angry Inch), an expatriate American student, bonds with a twin brother and sister, Isabelle (Eva Green) and Theo (Louis Garrel), over their mutual love of film--they not only quote lines of dialogue, they act out small bits and challenge each other to name the cinematic source. Matthew suspects the twins of incest, but that doesn't stop him from falling into his own intimacies with Isabelle. As the threesome becomes threatened, Paris succumbs to student riots. The Dreamers aspires to be kinky, but the results are more... More Info about this DVD Director(s): Bernardo Bertolucci DVD Release Date: Released the 13 July 2004 Usually ships in 24 hours

I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. The sex scenes were some of the best I've seen because they were graphic yet very realistic. The story was touching and honest. Sex and Lucia engages mind and body with its time-bending narrative and images of beautiful Spaniards having vibrant sex. The story shifts between past and present, fact and fiction, so a plot summary won't capture it, but A young writer named Lorenzo falls into a passionate relationship with a waitress named Lucía. But he also finds himself drawn to a young nanny taking care of a child who just might be the result of an anonymous fling Lorenzo had with a woman he met on an island the year before. Lorenzo fantasizes about the lives of all of these women until a horrific event sends him into a suicidal depression. This may sound obscure or flat, but Sex and Lucía unfolds clearly and beautifully, featuring stunning visual images of both nature and flesh, and... It's easy to identify the biggest attraction of Killing Me Softly: two fetching actors (Heather Graham, Joseph Fiennes) and lots of nudity--especially in the unrated version. It's harder to choose the bigger liability: the dialogue howlers (as Fiennes binds Graham in ropes, she says, "Sometimes I feel like I don't know you") or the incredibly obvious solution to the big mystery. The story is an unofficial update of Hitchcock's Suspicion: a new wife wonders whether her unbelievably charismatic husband might be a murderer. The Chinese filmmaker Chen Kaige (Farewell My Concubine) turns out to be exactly the wrong director for this overheated slice of l'amour fou in London, but with the hopeless pairing of Graham and Fiennes as the passionate lovers, he didn't have...
