DVD Best of the Muppet Show - Bob Hope / Dom DeLuise / George Burns
Fans of Golden Age comedy are in good hands with this trio of Muppet Show episodes. Special guest George Burns sings old vaudeville numbers and dusts off vintage one-liners, all while Rowlf the dog (voice by Jim Henson) accompanies on piano. The legendary comedian also dresses down sleazy gossip columnist Fleet Scribbler after the latter presses Burns for details about Miss Piggy's private life. Dom DeLuise hosts an energetic show full of pratfalls, particularly in a hysterical sketch set among the fuzzy, babbling inhabitants of Planet Koozebane. There's also high drama when DeLuise grows incensed over Piggy's legion of admirers; their growing numbers force her to dress in the star's changing room, resulting in an epic exchange of ego-driven insults. Finally, Bob Hope finds Kermit stealing some of his oldest jokes, but later trades quips with a horse during a "Don't Fence Me In" number. --Tom Keogh
Review(s): DVD Best of the Muppet Show - Bob Hope / Dom DeLuise / George Burns
Comedy Legends.
This is an excellent DVD including 3 episodes of the Muppet Show. I noticed this volume didn't have a review which needed to be remedied immediately. The 1st episode staring George Burns is extremely enjoyable. What I loved about it was the pleasure of seeing George Burns perform. Also, the songs and sketches are mostly old vintage stuff of the golden Vaudville era. There is also a running gag joke "Gonzo fiddles whild George Burns" that I found very amusing. The sub-plot is funny because a reporter from the "Daily Scandal" has gotten backstage and is trying to pump the cast and crew for "dirt" about the Show. All in all, a most enjoyable episode!
The 2nd episode stars Dom Deluise. This has a fun but weird sketch with Dom on the planet Koozbane. But this episode is really funny because of the sub-plot. Miss Piggy is trying to get Kermit to notice her by having Scooter help her pay off the audience to "go Hog-wild" whenever she comes on stage. Dom gets angry because his dressing room is filled with Piggy's flowers "from admirers" and she keeps stealing his applause. I thought it was funny.
The 3rd episode stars Bob Hope. The plot is that Bob is so busy with so many charity benefits that he only has time for a few talk spots and one final closing number song "Don't Fence Me In" performed with a talking horse. This was apparently inspired by his real life schedule. But it was of course great! Of course, I think almost every episode is great! I hope you enjoy them as I did. :-) Dena
Great shows -- forget the extras
These are three of the best "Muppet Show"s on DVD yet. The "extras" are not accessible via the main menu -- you must go into the individual episodes to find them, although there's not much there worth watching.
Help
Can somebody write a review of this DVD for me? I am a Muppet fan but only like the best of the best. I have been back here many times to check for reviews but have none. It would be much appreciated. Thank You.

Steve Martin, Carol Burnett, and Gilda Radner are the special guests in this delightful trio of episodes from the 1970s The Muppet Show. The Martin and Burnett installments are particularly interesting for their atypical formats. Instead of a variety presentation, the Martin show is organized as a series of auditions for new acts, including high-stepping rats, dancing cheese, and the extraterrestrial Four Fazoos. Into the mix comes Martin with his vintage balloon animals, banjo, juggling gear, and arrow-through-the-head prop. It's a truly original program, and even gets by without the series' usual canned laughter. Burnett's show is also built around a unifying concept: in this case, an episode-long dance marathon. Finally, Gilda Radner is paired with a snooty, 7-foot talking... Diana Ross, Brooke Shields, and Rudolph Nureyev dance, sing, and banter in this trio of episodes from television's The Muppet Show (1976-1981). Dressed as a diva, the star of soul joins Kermit in a "live" variety show to a tough crowd of Muppets. When Ross is not giggling at the good-natured Fozzie or those mellow crooners, the Gills Brothers, she belts out a couple of familiar songs, including "Love Hangover." In the second installment, Brooke Shields, 15, plays Alice, in a thematic show based on Alice in Wonderland. Shields is paired with Miss Piggy as Queen, who is outraged at her only line, "Off with her head!" The highlight is a Muppets rendition of Jabberwocky, hilariously offbeat and imaginative. Finally, ballet superstar Rudolph Nureyev lends his talent and... The emphasis is on music in this lively minicollection of episodes from The Muppet Show, but that doesn't mean the late Jim Henson's creative genius goes on holiday. Linda Ronstadt, at the height of her popularity in 1976, belts out her hit "Blue Bayou," though accompanied by Henson's delightful swamp critters. Gentle eco-warrior John Denver has no shortage of lovely nature songs, yet nothing tempers the rage of Miss Piggy, forced to share Kermit with Denver on a camping trip. In a classic Muppet showstopper, this DVD includes Harry Belafonte joined in a Guinea folk song by breathtaking African masks, which move and sing in a moment of true television magic. Brian Henson (Jim's son) introduces all three episodes with some shared memories; the most touching includes... That's what my 4-year-old daughter says whenever he sings. My twins absolutely love this DVD and it's brought back fond memories for me as well. It has been my son's hands-down favorite video for quite some time now. As a previous reviewer said, tell the world it's for the kids and turn Elton up! Enjoy. The negative reviews by some people on this episode are PATHETIC. What do these people expect- it's the MUPPETS. It's innocent, old-fashioned fun children's television. You'd think some of these idiots are writing a review for the Oscars. Please people, spare us with your heavy criticism. I haven't found any movies or videos that enjoy sharing more with my son. Not only do my husband and I get to reminisce, but we adore watching our son get excited about something that isn't overly animated or digitally created. So far, ALL of these DVD's have been fantastic- worth every penny. They are a refreshing break from all they hyped up children's movies of today. I recommend all of them, and I've seen just about all. OF COURSE the acting is a little goofier than what we're used to today,...
