  • DVD Returner

There's not a single original idea in Returner, but that doesn't stop this Japanese sci-fi action thriller from being a whole lotta fun. Combining elements of (what else?) The Matrix, E.T., The Terminator, and Independence Day, plus a dash of Back to the Future (among others), the mayhem begins when scruffy survivor Milly (Anne Suzuki) uses a time portal to leap from 2084--when humans are being systematically wiped out by invading aliens--to 2002, where she hooks up with a gunslinging maverick (Takeshi Kaneshiro) whose swirling overcoat and hair-trigger attitude make him the live-action equivalent of the quintessential anime hero. Together, they thwart a Yakuza psychopath (played with hilariously laconic nihilism by Goro Kishitani) who's attempting to steal a recovered alien spaceship to exploit its highly advanced weaponry. In its race to avoid an end-of-the-world scenario, Returner throws in just about everything from the sci-fi anime repertoire, and director Takashi Yamazaki blithely and blatantly shifts from juvenile sentiment to violent brutality, resulting in a clash of tones that makes Returner wildly entertaining but decidedly not for children. Utterly derivative but worthwhile for sci-fi and anime fans, it's a noteworthy case of clever recycling, with energy and ammunition to spare. --Jeff Shannon

    Review(s): DVD Returner
would have been a 50 million box office hit in america.

This was my first subtitled movie that I bought by accident. After 15 mins. into the movie I forgot the subtitles. The action and acting were great and its a good story.Great graphics. This is a must see!!!!

    Combo of Red Bull Speed

I know that I will defentaly have to see this film again. Japanese movies are getting that sleek futuristic look and Returner is chock full of it. Although I have to admit, there seem to be a lot of "homages" ranging from Matrix, Men in Black to Fifth Element, X-Files and so on. Still, it's an action packed with cool style to boot.

The main hero and butt whooping babe work well together. From martial arts, lasers, guns, explosions, action scenes are rapid that you're left blinking in awe. I defentaly think towards the final 30 minuites, it does seem to go on a tangment and a friend and I were trying to piece together what we could keep up. The CG is used well in enhancing the style of the film, especially the futuristic technology stuff.

Fun-And a somewhat happy ending for an asian film

I originally bought this because the preview looked really cool and I thought Takeshi Kaneshiro was very good looking. I really thought it would be kind of mediocre at best, but it was a fun film. The premise is simple. A girl goes into the past to stop the war that she and her people are loosing. She runs into Kaneshiro. She forces him to help her. The action is nonstop. I thought that the characters were likable and the ending was happy. This film is geared to science fiction lovers. It has the typical Matrix like action that most films are sporting these days. If you like action and sci fi this is for you. Girls, if you like cute Asian guys, they don't come any cuter that Takashi Kaneshiro.

    So Close DVD

[WARNING: THIS REVIEW MAY CONTAIN A SPOILER]

That pretty much says it all. True, an important character dies during the film, but this is a very daring move on the part of the director. I do not care for main characters getting killed, but once in a while it's okay. It gives my "film reality" a jolt, something it needs. As a female assassin, Shu Qi ranks at the top rank of cinematic killers. I have no doubt that she could kill Arnold, Clint Eastwood or Mel Gibson in any film roles. She is also so easy on the eyes that her anti-social job is acceptable. The action is top notch, as is the cinematography. Hong Kong Cinema is far ahead of any other and it shows here. Rating: 8 out of 10. More Info about this DVD

    Versus (Special Edition) DVD

This movie is amazing. The storyline is a bit hard to follow due to the relentless violence and gore, but thats what this movie is all about. The gore is some of the best I've ever seen, and the characters all act as if they were straight out of cartoons. It is a fast paced, awesome, and badass movie from start to finish. The very end doesn't make much sense, and they should have just left that part out, but i guess it leaves room for a sequel. Overall, this movie is the best movie ever, people can stop making movies now because they cannot top this amazing, heart-wrenching (literally), fun, kickass, badass movie. More Info about this DVD

    The Princess Blade DVD

Yuki Takemikazuchi (Yumiko Shaku) is the last blood member of the Takemikazuchi clan of that family and their associates, a band that has evolved from royal guardians into an independent society of trained assassins who specialize in using martial arts, focusing primarily on traditional Japanese sword craft. She is the "princess blade," the heir apparent by bloodline to assume command of the society at age 20, as did her mother before her violent death when Yuki was a little girl. She has been raised by the clan to wield the sword as swiftly as a thought, and to use her entire body as a lithe and lethal weapon. When the petite young woman is asked about her ability to kill like a wind filled with razors - and why she kills at all - she is puzzled, saying, "My body moves before I can think... Shiri DVD

A dazzling action movie from South Korea, Shiri follows two South Korean government agents, Ryu and Lee, as they pursue a female super-assassin from North Korea. Meanwhile, an elite paramilitary squad from North Korea has stolen a shipment of CTX, an undetectable liquid explosive of enormous power, which they've planted all over the city of Seoul. As their investigations are successively foiled, Ryu and Lee begin to suspect that there is a mole within the ranks of the agency--and it may be one of them. Both hyperstylish and hyperrealistic, Shiri rips along as a smooth fusion of Hong Kong and American action movies. Ryu's troubled romance with his alcoholic fiancée adds a striking emotional counterpoint to the blazing gunfights and high-speed chases; the ending is... More Info about this DVD

    House of Flying Daggers DVD

No one uses color like Chinese director Zhang Yimou--movies like Raise the Red Lantern or Hero, though different in tone and subject matter, are drenched in rich, luscious shades of red, blue, yellow, and green. House of Flying Daggers is no exception; if they weren't choreographed with such vigorous imagination, the spectacular action sequences would seem little more than an excuse for vivid hues rippling across the screen. Government officers Leo and Jin (Asian superstars Andy Lau and Takeshi Kaneshiro) set out to destroy an underground rebellion called the House of Flying Daggers (named for their weapon of choice, a curved blade that swoops through the air like a boomerang). Their only chance to find the rebels is a blind women named Mei (Ziyi Zhang, Crouching... More Info about this DVD
