DVD Aliens (Collector's Edition)
Aliens is one of the few cases of a sequel that far surpassed the original. Sigourney Weaver returns as Ripley, who awakens on Earth only to discover that she has been hibernating in space so long that everyone she knows is dead. Then she is talked into traveling (along with a squad of Marines) to a planet under assault by the same aliens that nearly killed her. Once she gets there, she finds a lost little girl who triggers her maternal instincts--and she discovers that the company has once again double-crossed her, in hopes of capturing one of the aliens to study as a military weapon. Directed and written by James Cameron, this is one of the most intensely exciting (not to mention intensely frightening) action films ever, with a large ensemble cast that includes Bill Paxton, Lance Henriksen, Paul Reiser, and Michael Biehn. Weaver defined the action woman in this film and walked away with an Oscar nomination for her trouble. --Marshall Fine
I recently purchased this dvd and had it shipped to New Zealand the zone warning came up but i took a gamble anyway. It works perfectly so with this dvd there is no need not to buy it if you think your dvd player wont play it. Great movie too.
Even Old Acid Blood Needs Mother Love
In many ways this is my favorite Aliens film. It takes a couple of watchings to realize that this isn't just a clone of Alien, even if the monsters are pretty much the same. Sigourney Weaver plays Ripley again, awakening after some fifty years of suspended animation to discover a world with which she has little connection. Her daughter dead of old age, and the company intent on punishing her for destroying one of their ships, the embittered Ripley is left no choice but to become a dock worker in a world that has no use for pilots who have lost their licenses.
The world of the alien has been terraformed and colonized. The company's chilling decision on learning that there might be a death ship on the planet is to send in some investigators without any preparation. The inevitable happens, and contact with the colony ceases and the worst is suspected. Ripley is drafted by Carter Burke (Paul Reiser), a sleazy executive with few moral and a lot of greed, to act as consultant to a team of space marines that should be able to handle almost anything an alien life form can try. Emphasis on 'should' of course.
The marines find that the colonists are dead, except for one young girl - Newt Jordan (Carrie Henn), who has stayed alive by hiding from the host of aliens that now have full run of the colony. The marines can kill the aliens, but the aliens can kill them. And there are a lot of the slimy things. Even worse, the creatures seem to have developed into something more than an animal and pretty soon, the humans are trapped on the planet and caught in a protracted last stand.
The story itself is excellent. The film is full of a lot of action, considerably more human interest than Alien did, and an excellent level of acting for an action film.
Overwhelming special effects are avoided, but there's no lack of detailed scenes and spooky alien photos. Even where the action is predictable it's still great fun to watch. I found the special edition of the film is even better than the theatrical release -- good to the last bite.
This time, they've brought friends
ALIENS is the blockbuster sequel to the groundbreaking film ALIEN. This time, King of the world James Cameron (TITANIC) takes the directing reigns previously held by Ridley Scott (Gladiator). Cameron has created a long, sturdy follow-up.
The "living ship" element of the prequel is replaced by the industrial environments Cameron uses in both Terminators and "The Abyss". But, how can you top a lone individual trapped with an impervious super beast? How about by having hundreds of them! That is basically the concept here.
Ripley (Sigourney Weaver in her academy award nominated portrayal) reluctantly returns to the planet where she first encountered a derelict ship and the alien that destroyed her crew. This time she is going on strictly as an observer amongst a band of tough marines. But, even with all their bravado, she doubts their chances against the alien race. And quickly we learn she's right.
This film also has a maternal flavor to it. We find out that Ripley has a child that has since passed on and so she `adopts' a lone gamin from the alien infested command center. This maternal instinct results in a final battle against the mother alien that even Jerry Springer couldn't control.
This film had very little chance of surpassing the original on ALIEN turf, so it redefined it. While the first film was more of a horror film, ALIENS surpasses ALIEN as an action film, filled with relentless excitement and twists. The alien race is even less human as they seem to have stopped their bi-pedal locomotion from the first film in favor of a `crawl quickly along floor, wall or ceiling'.
The DVD can truly test your sub-woofer and the video transfer is fine and it includes 17 minutes of extra footage. This was followed by 2 and a half more sequels but, ALIEN and ALIENS alone make for a great rainy day double feature.
A landmark of science fiction and horror, Alien arrived in 1979 between Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back as a stylishly malevolent alternative to George Lucas's space fantasy. Partially inspired by 1958's It! The Terror from Beyond Space, this instant classic set a tone of its own, offering richly detailed sets, ominous atmosphere, relentless suspense, and a flawless ensemble cast as the crew of the space freighter Nostromo, who fall prey to a vicious creature (designed by Swiss artist H.R. Giger) that had gestated inside one of the ill-fated crew members. In a star-making role, Sigourney Weaver excels as sole survivor Ripley, becoming the screen's most popular heroine in a lucrative movie franchise. To measure the film's success,... The least successful film in this series was directed by stylemaster (and content-underachiever) David Fincher. Ripley, the only survivor of her past mission, awakens on a prison planet in the far corners of the solar system. As she tries to recover, she realizes that not only has an alien gotten loose on the planet, the alien has implanted one of its own within her. As she battles the prison authorities (and is aided by the prisoners) in trying to kill the alien, she must also cope with a distinctly shortened lifespan that awaits her. But the striking imagery makes for muddled action and the script confuses it further. The ending looks startling but it takes a long time--and a not particularly satisfying journey--to get there. --Marshall FineMore Info about this DVD Actor(s): Sigourney Weaver Director(s): David Fincher DVD Release Date: Released the 01 June 1999 Usually ships in 24 hours

Perhaps these films are like the Star Trek movies: The even-numbered episodes are the best ones. Certainly this film (directed by French stylist Jean-Pierre Jeunet) is an improvement over Alien 3, with a script that breathes exciting new life into the franchise. This chapter is set even further in the future, where scientists on a space colony have cloned both the alien and Ripley (Sigourney Weaver), who died in Alien 3; in doing so, however, they've mixed alien DNA with Ripley's human chromosomes, which gives Ripley surprising power (and a bad attitude). A band of smugglers comes aboard only to discover the new race of aliens--and when the multi-mouthed melonheads get loose, no place is safe. But, on the plus side, they have Ripley as a guide to help them... Rambo meets Alien in this terrific science-fiction thriller from 1987, directed by John McTiernan just a year before Die Hard made him Hollywood's most sought-after director of action-packed blockbusters. Arnold Schwarzenegger leads an elite squad of U.S. Army commandos to a remote region of South American jungle, where they've been assigned to search for South American officials who've been kidnapped by terrorists. Instead they find a bunch of skinned corpses hanging from the trees and realize that they're now facing a mysterious and much deadlier threat. As the squad is picked off one by one, Arnold finds himself pitted against a hideous alien creature that's heavily armed and wearing a spacesuit enabling the creature to render itself invisible. The title says it... This is the film that cemented Schwarzenegger's spot in the action-brawn firmament, and it was well deserved. He's chilling as the futuristic cyborg who kills without fear, without love, without mercy. James Cameron's story and direction are pared to the bone and all the more creepy. But don't overlook the contributions of Linda Hamilton, who more than holds her own as the Terminator's would-be victim, Sarah Connor--thus creating, along with Sigourney Weaver in Alien, a new generation of rugged, clear-thinking female action stars. It's surprising how well this film holds up, and how its minimalist, malevolent violence is actually way scarier than that of its far more expensive, more effects-laden sequel. --Anne HurleyMore Info about this DVD Director(s): James Cameron DVD Release Date: Released the 02 October 2001 Usually ships in 24 hours
