DVD Bob & Rose - The Complete Series
Love conquers all in the radiant Bob & Rose, a six-part British series about an unorthodox romance that quickly gets under a viewer's skin. Bob Gossage (comedian-actor Alan Davies) is a thoroughly gay, Manchester schoolteacher who falls for Rose (Lesley Sharp), a vibrant secretary stuck with a boyfriend she doesn't love and a naïve mother bent on marrying a creepy con artist. Bob and Rose's bumpy, inexplicable affair has its share of doubts, and there are many rules to be re-written (Rose stands by her man whenever he insists that he's gay, not bi-sexual).
Yet these two know, instinctively, they are meant to grow up and out of their respective singles scenes (straights on one end of a club-dominated street, gays on the other end), no matter how painful their course or how often friends attempt to sabotage them. Davies and Sharp fully inhabit the rich characters created by writer Russell T. Davies, creator of the original, British version of Queer as Folk. This is a rewarding, lovely series, highly recommended. --Tom Keogh
I'll admit -- my first motivation for seeing ths was because I've been following Russell T. Davies's previous work now that he's the new Excecutive Producer and Writer for Doctor Who.
But I found this really wonderful, touching, romantic, and very real. With wonderful performances by all of the actors -- Alan Davies, Leslie Sharp, and Jessica Stevenson are all very believable in their roles, as well as all of the supporting cast members as well.
I'd actually suggest it to people in combination with Kevin Smith's Chasing Amy -- there's a bit of similarity, actually. And there's one thing that they both have in common -- one could get distracted by the sexual identity issues involved, when that's only a small feature -- it's about more universal issues about love and relationships.
Actor Christopher Eccleston (28 Days Later) is superb as a modern-day messiah in this captivating drama written by Russell T. Davies, author of the original British Queer as Folk series and the lovely Bob and Rose. Eccleston plays Steve Baxter, a mild-mannered, Manchester pub-crawler called one night to his true destiny as the second Son of God. After a couple of convincing miracles, the world looks to Steve for guidance, but he gives mixed signals: on one hand, he calls for a Third Testament to establish a foundation for living in the modern age; on the other, he predicts an imminent Judgment Day. The confusion causes mass mayhem, and Steve's disciples, especially an almost-but-not-quite love of his life (Lesley Sharp), try to make sense of the conflict while... A Love story about "What could have should have might have been" IF ONLY... is the basic premise of The Trip. The Trip follows two gay men through young adulthood into early middle age. One a fully realized gay young man living in truth to himself with honor without shame. This first young man was doing what he could as a gay activist from the 1970's onward to champion causes of gay rights, HIV awareness and diversity. The other gay man was a conflicted deeply closeted homosexual chap from one of those hellish super religious conservative homes where father rules with an iron fist and every aspect of waking life is lived daddy's straight arrow conservative way or no way.
On his own and away from his militaristic thought police father at home the young seemingly... More Info about this DVD Director(s): Miles Swain DVD Release Date: Released the 09 December 2003 Usually ships in 24 hours

Drama ruled in a big way on the third season of Queer as Folk, as the gay men and women of Pittsburgh rode a roller coaster of emotional and personal upheavals that would make a regular soap-opera cast blanch. Budding comic book artist Justin (Randy Harrison) finally left longtime lover Brian for a chance at ecstasy--and not a bit of agony-with a charming violin player. Emmett (Peter Paige) finally came face-to-face with his affection for friend Ted (Scott Lowell), only to have Ted's growing drug habit get in the way of their happiness. Lesbians Melanie (Michelle Clunie) and Lindsay (Thea Gill) decided to have another baby, whose father would be... Michael (Hal Sparks), whose nesting with hunky Ben (Robert Gant) is rudely interrupted by runaway Hunter (Harris Allan). And as... The second of the three Merchant/Ivory films adapting E.M. Forster novels (between A Room with a View and Howard's End), Maurice deals with a theme few period pieces dare mention--a young man's struggle with his homosexuality. It's not just a gay coming-of-age story, however. The hero wrestles with British class society as much as his personal and sexual identity.
The film opens on a stormy, windswept beach, as an older man awkwardly instructs young, fatherless Maurice Hall (James Wilby) in the "sacred mysteries" of sex. The same turbulent, wordless struggle with passion lasts throughout this slowly evolving, beautifully filmed story. Novelist E.M. Forster's brainy, British melodrama hinges on choice and compulsion, as the pensive hero falls for two completely...
