Rob Lowe and James Coburn star in this interesting near miss of a thriller with a good idea behind it. Lowe plays William Conroy, who is in prison for killing a woman in a drunk-driving accident. We know he is an intellectual prisoner because we see him reading 1984 and thinking a whole bunch. One night when he's up thinking, Conroy hears a disturbance in a nearby cell. He has, of course, heard too much and soon he's out of prison and running for his life. James Coburn ostensibly plays a victim's rights advocate, but you don't really think he's just going to sit around doing that, do you? The crux of the plot is an interesting idea, but the movie as a whole doesn't quite come off--it keeps lurching into the world of ridiculous hunches and providential timing. There are a few good chase scenes, and some surprisingly lush cinematography; Cleveland looks absolutely gorgeous. --Ali Davis
Okay, I'll be honest here. I bought this movie mostly because Rob Lowe is in it. Yet the plot is strange and it's rather disturbing to watch. They kept going from scene to scene rather quickly in my opinion, not allowing the plots to fully unfold.
This movie made me mad!!!
...I am a huge movie fan and I will always give a movie a chance, but this movie never even had a chance!!! ...There are so many parts of this movie that were not well thought out at all ...I dare you to see this movie!!!...
What a waste of time....
This is possibly the worst movie I've ever seen. I take that back. It definitely is the worst movie I've ever seen. The good news is that I didn't pay a cent to see it. The whole movie was comprised of really bad acting. Rob Lowe must be hurting for money. The plot was beyond ridiculous. I feel sorry for anyone who was in this movie or had anything to do with it. It really stunk up the place.
Sean Penn and Benecio Del Toro, two of the most gripping actors around, play wildly different men linked through a grieving woman (Naomi Watts, Mulholland Drive, The Ring) in 21 Grams. Del Toro (Traffic, The Usual Suspects) delves deep into the role of an ex-con turned born-again Christian, a deeply conflicted man struggling to set right a terrible accident, even at the expense of his family. Penn (Mystic River, Dead Man Walking) captures a cynical, philandering professor in dire need of a heart transplant, which he gets from the death of Watts' husband. 21 Grams slips back in forth in time, creating an intricate emotional web out of the past and the present that slowly draws these three together; the result is remarkably fluid and... 'Masquerade' is a tense thriller containing a multitude of twists and turns that keep the viewer guessing to the end. It is in the same vein as 'Bad Influence', 'Sleeping with the Enemy', and 'Dead Calm'. I first watched this film when it was released on VHS in 1988 ... it is still as exciting today.
Shattered Glass is the best film about journalism since All the President's Men. If that seems like lofty praise, consider this: In telling the true story of fallen journalist and pathological liar Stephen Glass, writer-director Billy Ray had to thoroughly and believably demonstrate how Glass--played in a pitch-perfect performance by Hayden Christensen--could single-handedly betray the trust of vigilant editors, writers, fact-checkers, and copyeditors while he falsified numerous highly praised articles as a hot, seemingly gifted reporter for The New Republic magazine in the late 1990s. Making an assured directorial debut, Ray brilliantly explores the delicate office politics that allowed for Glass's ongoing deception, which was diligently exposed by a reporter (Steve... A young boy named Owen learns the startling truth about dogs: They're actually from outer space, sent here to rule mankind. A canine agent from the star Sirius (voiced by Matthew Broderick) gets rescued from the pound by Owen (Liam Aiken) and named Hubble. As Hubble desperately tries to train a motley crew of dogs from Owen's neighborhood to behave like conquerors before the Greater Dane arrives and decides the planet's fate, the outer space pooch slowly bonds with Owen and discovers why dogs may have joined forces with humans instead of dominating them. Good Boy! will charm dog lovers in particular, but the movie has enough clever touches to engage most viewers, and it manages a sweet tone without turning cloyingly saccharine. Featuring the voices of Carl Reiner, Brittany Murphy,... You wouldn't know it by watching the Batman movies they collaborated on, but this smart adaptation of John Grisham's novel proves that director Joel Schumacher and screenwriter Akiva Goldsman have some talent when the right project comes along. Schumacher had previously directed Grisham's The Client, and brought equal craft and intelligence to this story about a young Southern attorney (Matthew McConaughey, in his breakthrough role) who defends a black father (Samuel L. Jackson) after he kills two men who raped his young daughter. Sandra Bullock plays the passionate law student who serves as McConaughey's legal aide and voice of conscience in the racially charged drama. Added to the star power of the lead roles is a fine supporting cast, including Kevin Spacey, Ashley Judd,...
