DVD Dickie Roberts - Former Child Star (Full Screen Edition)
David Spade embodies Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star with the snide, glib, and bored attitude for which he is loved by his fans. Dickie, whose mother abandoned him in his youth when his TV show was canceled, yearns to regain the spotlight. But he can't get a promising role because the director believes that Dickie isn't a real person; so, to find his real self, Dickie hires a family to give him the childhood he never had. Dickie Roberts has some scattered laughs, but the writers have no better grasp of reality than Dickie himself; the "normal family" Dickie hires is as warm and glossy as any TV clan. A busload of real former child stars play exaggerated versions of themselves, but the result is more uncomfortable than satirical. However, if you want to see David Spade imitate a jet-ski, this is your movie. --Bret Fetzer

love it
If you rent this movie, be sure not to turn it off at the very end. Let the credits roll because that part is probably the funniest thing of the movie! Overall, the film was very funny as well, but not as funny as the bonus at the end. David Spade was very funny in this movie, and also very lost. I thought this movie wasn't going to be very good, and after renting it I BOUGHT IT. I think that it is silly, funny, and then it turned into a movie with a lot of heart. The family that takes him in is lost just like Dickie and they find themselves in each other. I love those type of movies. Since he helped write the movie, it is easy for him to get in character and play it to a T. Sure, it is a little stupid and juvenile at times, but the catch phase is `Nuckin Futs'. You will find yourself saying that after watching the movie!!
Amusing Spade doing Spade
I am in mourning. I am in the limo on the way to a Hollywood cemetery. In my hand I hold some flowers to place on the grave, the death of a childhood crush. I watched this movie, it was typical Spade humor there were some funny parts (why do all rap stars have a poster of scarface?, brilliant), mostly its like watching a car wreck. What shocked me was the ending, with all the child stars singing. I have seen a lot of these people doing things, mostly on VH1 "where are they now" or some flashback to the 70's and 80's show. BUT there was one person. Who I haven't seen, since I took his poster off my wall so long ago, I still watch his movies like the Lost Boys, and Dream a Little Dream, and always wondered what happened to him. Well I have my answer...He has been in hiding because he has turned into a woman! COREY HAIM OMG what happened to you! He has the same hair, with the little highlight in the cowlick, I swear he was wearing shoulderpads in his jacket but..but...he looks like a woman now, not fat, but bloated..full of fluids, Corey Feldman looked absolutely shrunken next to him, what happened? I am still in shock. Someone help me! By the way I though "ReRun" was going to put out everyones eyes dancing like he did.
Fun, Retro Comedy
Fun, retro, comedy that unfortunately bases itself on bad over acting to carry the plot along. Was that, no, David Spade acting? Yes, once in a while David actually stops the "stand up comedy routine" and appears to have, uh, "emotional feelings". I don't care what other people say, the movie is a fun ride as long as you can overlook the occasional, if not frequent, "acting school drop out" performance by some of the actors. It delivers some good laughs and that's what it's all about.
Bottom Line:
Great surround sound. Lots of child actor 60's, 70's and 80's actor "cameo" appearances.

Turbo-charged comic Jack Black shakes School of Rock to its foundations, wailing with born-again metalhead passion as Dewey Finn, a guitarist who gets kicked out of a band because he grandstands too much--or, to put it another way, enjoys himself. Through an intercepted phone call, Finn gets a job as a substitute teacher for a fifth grade class at a private grade school. Neither students nor teacher quite know what to do with each other until Finn discovers that some of his young charges can play instruments; at once he starts turning them into a blistering rock & roll troupe that can crush his former band at an upcoming competition. School of Rock is silly and formulaic, but director Richard Linklater (Dazed and Confused), writer Mike White (The Good Girl),... Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson--dark, wiry, and tense meets blond, lanky, and loose--make a solid comic team (and previously appeared together in Zoolander), but the funniest man in Starsky and Hutch is Vince Vaughn. Vaughn dives into his role as a sleazy drug dealer (who nonetheless buys a pony for his daughter's bat mitzvah) with the offhand zest that he brings to almost every role (from Swingers to Old School) and effortlessly steals every scene he's in. Vaughn has concocted a new and undetectable kind of cocaine, and only two cops who aren't afraid to break the rules--our titular pair--can catch him. But the plot isn't the point; mocking-yet-loving jabs at the '70s, including the homoerotic overtones of Starsky and Hutch's partnership, are what this movie is... Another of those cut-and-paste comedies from Adam Sandler's production company starring one of Sandler's erstwhile Saturday Night Live colleagues, The Adventures of Joe Dirt finds the magnificently caustic David Spade emasculated by a sentimental script and shapeless, haphazard cutting. Spade plays the title character, a white-trash orphan in search of the parents who abandoned him at the Grand Canyon. The humor is supposed to come from Joe's misadventures, his redneck gullibility, and his encounters with such figures as a serial killer, a wacked-out janitor (Christopher Walken), and a lovable gal (Jamie Pressly) who may, unfortunately, turn out to be his sister. But the squishier requirements of the story, requiring the audience to feel deeply for the pain of Spade's... With generous amounts of good luck and good timing, 50 First Dates set an all-time box-office record for the opening weekend of a romantic comedy; whether it deserved such a bonanza is another issue altogether. It's a sweet-natured vehicle for sweet-natured stars Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, and their track record with The Wedding Singer no doubt factors in its lowbrow appeal. But while the well-matched lovebirds wrestle with a gimmicky plot (she has no short-term memory, so he has to treat every encounter as their first), director Peter Segal (who directed Sandler in Anger Management) ignores the intriguing potential of their predicament (think Memento meets Groundhog Day) and peppers the proceedings with the kind of juvenile humor that Sandler fans... It's no surprise that The Hot Chick is stupid; what's remarkable is the ambition of its stupidity. After a hokey, Mummy-like prologue to establish the body-switching spell cast by an ancient pair of Abyssinian earrings, the low-concept lunacy begins when those earrings are divided, eons later, between a cruel-minded high school campus queen (Rachel McAdams) and a small-time crook (Rob Schneider), who switch bodies (externally he's the hot chick, and she's the vulgar sleazeball) and must cope with the consequences of their sudden gender crisis. This tired idea may seem fresh and funny to eight-year-olds and morons, but Schneider and first-time director Tom Brady (who wrote Schneider's The Animal) fail to fulfill the potential of their ripe comedic...
