  • DVD Shiva Rea - Yoga Shakti

Comprehensive but user-friendly, reasonably challenging but accessible to a variety of levels, Yoga Shakti is inarguably one of the best yoga products on the market--no small achievement when one considers just how many of them there are. Instructor-creator Shiva Rea, a California-based yogi of considerable international renown, specializes in vinyasa yoga (a vinyasa is essentially a series of flowing, connected poses, incorporating breath and movement and cultivating heat, strength, flexibility, and balance). Four complete practices are presented, ranging in length from 42 to 85 minutes and including Basic Flow (for beginners), two more vigorous Solar Flow sequences, and a Lunar Flow sequence falling somewhere in the middle in terms of degree of difficulty; familiar poses like sun salutations, forward bends, lunges, twists, and inversions are featured, although Rea adds many of her own touches (such as the four "dancing warrior" sections, sun salutation variations designed for intermediate users and focusing on hips, backbends, and so on), and there are also sections devoted to pranayama (breathing exercises) and meditation. It's all good, but the principal innovation of Yoga Shakti is the "yoga matrix," which allows users to customize and program their own workouts, drawing on portions of any or all of the four sequences to create series of various lengths and levels of intricacy (some guidelines are suggested for the less experienced) and thus keep their practices fresh and evolving. One can also do the various workouts with or without the instruction audio track on (the Indian-New Age-flavored music is quite good, and usually unobtrusive), and there's even an entire second disc, containing interviews, additional instruction, travel footage (filming took place primarily in India and the Maldive Islands), and more. All in all, Yoga Shakti is most impressive. --Sam Graham

Review(s): DVD Shiva Rea - Yoga Shakti
    Very Namaste

I love Yoga Shakti very much. There are 2 DVDs and a booklet inside the case and the first DVD contains all 4 yoga workouts like Basic Flow, Solar Flow 1, Solar Flow 2 and Lunar Flow. Shiva Rea performs all of these vinyasa flow practices alone on the gorgeous beaches of Maldives'Island and Kerala, India. The extra archival footage included of Indian festivals and practices in temples is also a nice surprise. This DVD is definitely worth every penny.

Beautifuly set & great amount of content for INTERMEDIATE yoga practitioners

Everyone wrote great reviews, the only thing I can add is to agree it's a great DVD that you can customize with hours of practice to choose from, she's very serene with a spiritual side & not boring. She doesn't give enough verbal clues to keep up & she goes pretty fast, almost power yoga speed. After over 4 years of using yoga dvds, I still had trouble keeping up with her pace & hve given up, though do hope to one day be able to do it. Reading the reviews, people have complained of being unable to keep up or injuries.

You can see a the introduction of her dvd at store soundstrue com Also, you can see trailers from her lunar flow, solar flow & sun salutations which this dvd has content from.

    Fabulous, but NOT for beginners!

I can't say enough how much I love this video. The rich gorgeous visuals, the challenging flow series, the way-cool ability to build your own series. It's beyond wonderful and totally raises the bar in every way.

However, I would consider this video *dangerous* for a total beginner. Very few alignment cues are given, and in order to create flow Shiva Rea assumes you are already familiar with most basic yoga poses.

In the special features, she does give some fascinating information on alignment, but again it's not beginner information.

Of course, a video can't be all things to everyone, and for the intermediate or advanced student interested in a beautiful practice and a challenging strength-building and flexibility workout, I haven't seen a video that even approaches this one.

Bryan Kest Power Yoga Complete Collection DVD

Anyone wanting to get in shape like the stars need go no further than Bryan Kest's home-video workouts. Kest teaches wildly popular yoga classes in Santa Monica, California--so popular that stars like Rhea Perlman, David Duchovny, and Elisabeth Shue willingly sweat alongside the hoi polloi in Kest's packed, ancient loft studio. If you don't happen to be in the neighborhood, not to worry: Kest's yoga videos are nearly as good as being there. Volume 1, Energize, is a beginner-level class that nonetheless is smartly designed to provide challenges for all levels of users. Kest's Jersey-boy voice at first seems in contrast to the serene environment and inner-peace objectives, but it gradually becomes soothing and hypnotic in its own right. Stretches and strengthening moves are... More Info about this DVD

Seane Corn - Vinyasa Flow Yoga - Uniting Movement And Breath DVD

Once again, in her second DVD Vinyasa Flow, Sean Corn provides a good solid workout. There definitely are no surprises to the routine, which places its foundation on basic Sun Salutation and Down Dog movements. The flow of this DVD is consistent and each posture flows very naturally into the next, nothing feels unnatural or overstraining. Corn is one of the best when it comes to good flow and breathing. My only complaint, as it was in her first DVD, the actual 60-minute "breathing session" workout has no verbal cues, just the sound of Corn breathing. Beginners especially will find that somewhat irratating, because they will have to keep looking up at the screen to see what to do next. Seasoned yoga practitioners, though, will adapt to non-verbal cues more easily after a couple of... More Info about this DVD

Kundalini Yoga for Beginners & Beyond DVD

I had never done yoga before this DVD and am grateful for the easy intro into the form. I love that this workout is one I can do in a short amount of time and it seems to cover all my needs. I also love that when I am done the workout I feel refreshed and energized and not tired.
This is a great Intro and the 5 Tibetans are awesome!

Ultimate Stretch Workout - Kundalini Yoga w/ Ravi Singh & Ana Brett DVD

I LOVE this DVD; I was going to put it on my Christmas list but could not wait after seeing the streaming video preview on the [...] website.I have been doing power yoga for 3 years & love my gym's classes, but started to need more stretch. All the strength building was making me lose my flexibility which was starting to make me feel like I am getting old and I am only in my very early 30's! Plus I was starting to get carpal tunnel from too many down dogs. This is the perfect workout for me when I can't get to the gym. Since I can't get to the gym a lot over the holidays I plan to be using this a lot in the next couple months. I think it will help me to maintain muscle while helping me to get my elasticity back.
Another holiday plus:This type of yoga always leaves me energized and... More Info about this DVD
