  • DVD The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (New Line Platinum Series)

The 2003 version of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre adheres to the pure and simple slasher movie formula: Introduce a gaggle of sexy young people, make vague gestures to distinguish them--Jessica Biel (Summer Catch) wants to get married and doesn't like pot, so she's our moral compass--then start hacking them to pieces one by one. The visual palette includes grimy crucified dolls, fly-specked pig carcasses, body parts floating in murky jars, a tobacco-chewing redneck sheriff, and many slender beams of sunlight cutting through dank, dusty interiors. The camera lovingly photographs Biel's tank-topped bosom and sculpted abs as she's running in terror from a bloated, chainsaw-wielding, human-skin-wearing maniac. This remake lacks the macabre comedy of the original; it's all about the nauseating sensation of waiting for something to jump out of the dark. Also featuring Eric Balfour (Six Feet Under) and R. Lee Ermey (Full Metal Jacket, Mail Call). --Bret Fetzer

We live in an age where remakes to any film are looked upon with shame and disgust. No matter how good the film actually turns out, the fact that it was ever made in the first place is considered by many as the one unforgivable sin.

I had heard the stories of Tobe Hooper's 1974 "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" just like everybody else, from the time I was sixteen years old. It was always the one movie people seemed to gravitate towards whenever the subject of horror was raised in conversation. I finally broke down and took a rental of the original home with me one night after work. To this day, I still have not been able to finish the movie through. It wasn't because I found the material disturbing or scary, not at all. The main reason I could never get through it was basically due to my profound displeasure with its overall poor quality and craftsmanship. I realize that I might very well represent a shrewd minority in that regard, but my opinion is nevertheless fact. Tobe Hooper's film plain and simply rubbed me the wrong way. Allow me to be clear now when I say that this wasn't a realization I came to easily. It was, infact, an assessment I had made only after attempting to sit through the film at four more subsequent and consecutive points in my life. Ultimately, as difficult as it may be for most other fans to comprehend, this was one of the "classics" that just didn't do anything for me.

Then, in 2003, came Marcus Nispel. He, at Michael Bay's behest, put together a stellar re-imagining of Tobe Hooper's original screenplay. Scott Kosar, who most recently penned the script for last spring's "Amityville Horror," updated Hooper's treatment and, within a short span, the film was put before cameras. Say whatever you want about my negative spin on Hooper's film, but I thought this remake blew that one thoroughly out of contention. The opening scenes, alone, set a pace throughout that never lagged. I presently cannot recall the last american-made horror film that was ever able to maintain the same aura of unmitigated dread that this motion picture possesses. This is no walk in the park, my friends! It is a movie that very literally kept me riveted to the edge of my seat in a cold sweat!

Jessica Biel, along with all the other principal actors, turned in some very believable performances. Even R. Lee Ermey, who can tend to overdo it at times, was an effective screen presence. The production also earns every last second of its coveted "R" rating. It was the much needed shot in the arm our current horror genre needed, at least until Zack Snyder's "Dawn of the Dead" met with similar success one year later.

I was totally pleased with what this remake brought to the table. I think anybody who favors a solid, intense, and in-your-face approach to sheer terror will be, as well. This title is definitely worth a purchase and belongs in every serious horror fan's collection.

    Back to basics

Okay. Jessica Biel in a tank top. Very nice. One unrealistic quality was Jessica in a meat locker, and then in a sprinkler system (after the meat locker) and no natural reaction under the tank top.....
Great movie, tho. A few startling moments towards to beginning. Great camera work, and some of the effects (not to give anything away) were fantastic. Good old fashioned horror flick stuff. Hot chick running away from the bad guys, dark shadowy corners where evil things creep, and lots of gore! No one likes the thought of meeting the wrong end of a chainsaw! Well worth the 5 bucks I spent buying it used here at Amazon...

    Saw (Widescreen Edition) DVD

Saw opens with a gruesome scenario: Two men are chained to the walls of a grimy bathroom with a bloody corpse lying on the floor between them. Tape recordings tell them that one of the men has to kill the other, or his wife and child will die. The corpse is holding a gun in one hand, but it's out of reach...but whoever has locked these two up has thoughtfully provided a hacksaw that can't cut through the heavy chain, but might cut through a little flesh and bone. From there, Saw jumps back and forth as the two men slowly unravel how they know each other and that their tormentor is one of those all-knowing, all-capable serial killers (it goes without saying that Saw is hugely influenced by Seven and the movies of Dario Argento), a fellow known as Jigsaw who... Dawn of the Dead (Widescreen Unrated Director's Cut) DVD

Are you ready to get down with the sickness? Movie logic dictates that you shouldn't remake a classic, but Zack Snyder's Dawn of the Dead defies that logic and comes up a winner. You could argue that George A. Romero's 1978 original was sacred ground for horror buffs, but it was a low-budget classic, and Snyder's action-packed upgrade benefits from the same manic pacing that energized Romero's continuing zombie saga. Romero's indictment of mega-mall commercialism is lost (it's arguably outmoded anyway), so Snyder and screenwriter James Gunn compensate with the same setting--in this case, a Milwaukee shopping mall under siege by cannibalistic zombies in the wake of a devastating viral outbreak--a well-chosen cast (led by Sarah Polley, Ving Rhames, Jake Weber, and Mekhi... The Grudge DVD

It's not the scary hit that The Ring was in 2002, but The Grudge makes a similarly convincing case for American remakes of popular Japanese horror films. Barely a year passed between the release of Takashi Shimizu's creepy ghost story Ju-On: The Grudge and the production of this American remake, set in Tokyo and starring Sarah Michelle Gellar in her first post-Buffy horror film. About the only significant difference between the two films is the importing of a mostly-American cast (including Bill Pullman, Clea DuVall and Grace Zabriskie), but The Grudge was reconfigured (by screenwriter Stephen Susco) to allow Shimizu to refine and improve the spookiest highlights of his earlier version, which enjoyed previous incarnations as a short film and two... Freddy vs. Jason (New Line Platinum Series) DVD

After 11 years in development hell and screenplay drafts by 13 different writers, the long-awaited smackdown of Freddy vs. Jason finally arrives. After making their respective debuts in Friday the 13th (1980) and A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), the hockey-masked killer Jason Voorhees (Ken Kirzinger, replacing long-time Jason performer Kane Hodder) and razor-gloved Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) square off in a slasher-franchise combo-deal that only their most devoted fans will appreciate; turns out this is a lightweight match in which nobody wins. It's an average entry in the histories of these horror icons, comparable to half of their previous sequels, and Bride of Chucky director Ronny Yu satisfies purists with plenty of gushing blood and mayhem when... The Texas Chainsaw Massacre DVD

This sensational, extremely influential, 1974 low-budget horror movie directed by Tobe Hooper (Poltergeist, Lifeforce, Salem's Lot), may be notorious for its title, but it's also a damn fine piece of moviemaking. And it's blood-curdling scary, too. Loosely based on the true crimes of Ed Gein (also a partial inspiration for Psycho), the original Jeffrey Dahmer, Texas Chainsaw Massacre follows a group of teenagers who pick up a hitchhiker and wind up in a backwoods horror chamber where they're held captive, tortured, chopped up, and impaled on meat hooks by a demented cannibalistic family, including a character known as Leatherface who maniacally wields one helluva chainsaw. The movie's powerful sense of dread is heightened by its grainy, semi-documentary... More Info about this DVD
