DVD Chappelle's Show - Season 1
The 2003 debut of Chappelle's Show on Comedy Central marked a high point for the cable channel, and now the entire, wildly creative first season can be seen, with hundreds of bleeps removed. That's not to say Chappelle's Show is perfect entertainment: there are too many moments among the 12 episodes here that descend into pointless scatology and booty fever. But for the most part, Chappelle, a talented comic slowly growing into greatness, is trying to push the sketch-humor envelope and succeeds at surprising us with original concepts and merciless execution.
The merely clever material includes "National Geography's Third World Girls Gone Wild," basically an update on those topless-native-women gags of yore, and Chappelle's "Educated Guess Line," in which the sage comic eschews psychic powers to logically deduce racial insights from his callers' questions. Far more wicked is an in-your-face satire on such autobiographical film fare as Antwone Fisher and 8 Mile, in which Chappelle plays himself ascending from street hustler to rapper-comedian to bona fide savior of America. The best thing here, however, is a parallel-universe version of The Real World, in which the usual racial proportions on MTV's workhorse series are reversed, thrusting a token white guy into a Hoboken houseful of crazy African Americans. There are also laughs in "Ask a Gay Guy with Mario Cantoned," as well as a sketch about an "inner-thoughts cam" and a nasty piece about Chappelle's Make-a-Wish visit to a dying child, which decays into a cruel video game competition. Overlooking the series' weaker material, this is outstanding television comedy. --Tom Keogh
I think Chapelle's Show is about average for tv comedy. There are some clever ideas, but a lot of filler used in bringing them to life. Most of his skits seem designed to appeal mostly to viewers who fit or relate to the urban/ghetto persona he portrays. Chris Rock has a similar persona but his subject matter is more universally relatable. Chappelle's Show seems to require the viewer to laugh with rather than at the urban/ghetto perspective, something impossible for the white suburbanites who presumably comprise most of the show's fanbase. Most of his skits are also one-note jokes that get dragged out for way too long. The blind, black white-supremicist bit is a prime example. It's a vaguely clever concept, but the punchline is delivered at the start and everything that comes after is entirely predictable. I guess maybe people like that because they like being in on the joke as it unfolds, I dunno, but I think a vital part of comedy is consistently zigging and zagging, not just introducing a concept and then fleshing it out piece by predictable redundant piece. The absurdity of the Player Hater's Ball concept on the other hand did benefit from being fleshed out because it had some kind of originality to it.
One of the best comedy shows in history
Without a doubt, Dave Chappelle created one of the greatest shows to air on television, but I might just be saying too much...or not. Everything he does will crack you up and if it doesn't you have no sense of humor. While I don't have the first season yet, I have seen the whole thing, and it is worth the purchase 100%.
Dave Chappelle isn't a blind comedian who let's power get in his way. He knows what's best for him and that is another reason why he is one of the best comedians in America today. There are many hilarious sketches that somehow were beat by the next season, but that's no reason to skip this set!
This contains all the episodes fully uncensored, as we want them and funny as h e l l commentary by Dave and Neal. There are also bonus features that need your attention. There is no thinking over to do, go buy it now!
dave chappelle's show is golden(and that ain't no shower)!
this was and still is one of the best skit comedy shows out at the time. dave's natural gift of comedy is very well suited to this outrageous and howling, profaine, and insightful show. mr. chappelle has taken some great bits and turned skit comedy on it's ear! this set isn't for everyone, but if like me the skit of the blind, black white supermacist(watch to understand) is just the funniest bit i have seen in years.
like i said this is not for all taste as the laungage is very corse and the skits are very much geared for adults(keep the kids away!!!), but for those with the sence of humor to like dave this is a great collection to have!!
Dave Chappelle's shrewd parodies, stinging satires, and boldly imaginative fantasias simply pour from the second season of his Comedy Central show, in every respect as funny as his well-received debut year. The structure is the same: a relaxed Chappelle introduces each sketch to an enthusiastic, studio audience (some of these introductions amount to stand-up routines), and then the madness begins. Among the many highlights from the 13 episodes on this boxed set's three discs is a mock ad for Samuel L. Jackson beer, featuring Chappelle's hilarious impression of Jackson's stern, overbearing persona from Pulp Fiction, and a dozen other features. Chappelle, considering a career in politics, floats a couple of trial campaign commercials, including one that promises to solve America's... Dave Chappelle-For What It's Worth finds the Comedy Central superstar in performance at San Francisco's legendary Winterland, where he's welcomed with a huge ovation. Easing into his set, Chappelle shares a few observations about the city itself, noting there's nothing tender about the Tenderloin District: "You've got people smoking crack while sitting in front of Starbucks." Chappelle's inspiration dips a bit after that, as the subject of sex with monkeys and smoking weed with Indians doesn't quite reach his usual standards. Then, suddenly, he's on top of his game again, his material like an echo of vintage Lenny Bruce as he discusses why whites drink grape juice and blacks drink "grape drink," why police harassment has led him to believe in impromptu alibis, and why the culture... Killin' Them Softly is easily one of HBO's best comedy specials, catching star Dave Chappelle at a career high in 2000 and with an abundance of hysterical, highly polished material. Taking his time, stretching concepts and bits like a master, Chappelle plunges into a wealth of anecdotes and observations about the influx of white people into Washington, D.C. (where this show was recorded) since the 1980s. ("Who are the scariest people? White guys in black gangs. No telling what they did to get respect.") There are fantastic tales of racing cops with Chappelle's white friend, Chip, and a great story about being left alone in a limousine outside a busy crack house. Other good stuff: introducing a kid to a PePe Le Pew cartoon and realizing too late the skunk is a sex criminal, and why... "Keep it real" says Ali G (Sacha Baron Cohen) at the top of each show. Keeping it real is what the British comedian does--and doesn't do--during each episode. First, there's the character of Ali G himself. There's nothing real about this slang-slinging geezer. He's a poser, a white hip-hop wannabe from the 'burbs who aspires to be "gangsta" like Biggie and Tupac. His interview subjects, on the other hand, are the real deal: Newt Gingrich, Buzz Aldrin, Donald Trump, etc. Ali asks stupid questions, they attempt to provide intelligent answers. The humor comes from the disconnect between the two, which is to say: 60 Minutes meets In Living Color.
Da Ali G Show was a hit in Britain before Cohen brought his act to the States, but Ali wasn't the only character who came... More Info about this DVD Director(s): Scott Preston - James Bobin DVD Release Date: Released the 17 August 2004 Usually ships in 24 hours
