  • DVD The Swan Princess (Special Edition)

This excellent theatrical feature is loosely based on the Swan Lake story. Princess Odette, having been turned into a swan by a sorcerer's spell, is held captive at the enchanted lake with friends Jean-Bob the frog, Speed the turtle, and Puffin the bird. Along comes Prince Derek, who becomes involved in liberating her by taking on the villain. The movie has been criticized for being too similar to Sleeping Beauty, but once you're watching it--with its strong characters, entertaining vocal performances (John Cleese and Steven Wright are particularly funny), fine artwork, and action--such complaints are negligible. --Tom Keogh

    Great for the whole family

The movie I always enjoyed and My kids absolutly love it. BUt what makes this Dvd great is the extra features it comes with. It not only has lots of fun and games that are enjoyable as well as educational but also a storybook that explains how jean bob the frog , speed the turtle and puffin the bird lived before they met. For preschoolers the extra features are perfect. If nothing else the film itself has a beautiful story with songs better then in some disney films. At least I always thought far longer then forever was done very well. Overall the Dvd is worth it for many generations!

    AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Hi I'm a girl (OMG I JUST TYPED GIRK! HAHAHA) hanging out with my friend and we watched this movie when we were little and we thought it ROCKED! first, we loved the villian's name -- ROTHBART. i mean, who else could have COME UP with that crazy name?!? AND he was the funniest villain with the whole - "i intend to eat your lunches" hahahaha we find that line so funny. HAHAHAHAHA we're creepy (OMG I JUST TYPED CREPPY!) but we loved this movie & if you're total whackos like us, you'll like it too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Beautiful Love Story and Definitley Worth Watching

This, in my opinion, is the best animated movie ever made. The story is beautiful, the characters are strong (Derek in particular), the music is wonderful, and the animation is awesome! Odette is the typical princess; blonde, blue-eyed, and kind. When captured and turned into a swan, she definitely turns into a damsel in distress, but she has a strong personality and isn't afraid of anything or anyone. Prince Derek is by far the best character. It seems awful that he insults Odette (accidentally and unknowingly, sadly-typical guy), almost kills her, and then makes a vow to the wrong Odette, but it is so hard not to love him. His archery skills are also very kick-butt which is cool. Lord Rogers and Jean-bob are also hilarious.
The music is very good as well. "This Is My Idea" is so awesome. I find it totally cool that Odette and Derek hated each other when they were kids and it was fun to see them fighting. "Far Longer Then Forever" is a beautiful song and is every bit comparable to "A Whole New World" and all those Disney songs. Although many people say that the song "Princesses on Parade" is an annoying song, I like it a lot and I think it is very catchy. Side Note-how weird would it be to have an entire ballroom full of girls swooning and actually fainting at the sight of you?
Okay-the best scenes (no huge spoilers). By far the best scene was the sequence when Derek was trying to kill Odette in swan form. This was a very powerful scene. It also shows Odette's strength, something nice to see from a DID. It was also cool when Odette chomped up those roses in her swan form. It's worth watching the movie just to see that.
Every movie has it's faults, so here are some (although they are not very bad). As much as I love the "Far Longer Than Forever" sequence, Derek and Odette's constant hand gestures got a little weird. In one part it looked like they were using sign language to convey what they were singing. The second thing-"No More Mr. Nice Guy". This is Rothbart's, the bad-guy, song. The music was fine, it just wasn't evil enough. When I heard the line "I intend to eat their lunches" I was like "what?" I mean, how weird is that? Personally I don't think putting kick me signs on people and eating people's lunches is very evil. It needed to be eviler, since he was an evil dude.
This movie is awesome and I love it to death. I'm a 15-year-old girl who can't get enough of this movie. It is a beautifully crafted, simple fairy tale. I highly recommend this movie.

    Thumbelina DVD

Ranking just behind the best of animator Don Bluth's films (Anastasia and The Secret of NIMH), Thumbelina is a bubble-light version of Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale. The finger-sized heroine goes about the old-fashioned trials of trying to find a good man, but the film is clever enough to make it endearing for the 3-6 set and more than passable for adult viewers. Barry Manilow provides much of the song score, which helps immensely. The ballad "Let Me Be Your Wings" is as good as Disney's best. Carol Channing and Charo have a good ol' time with their songs too. The voice of Thumbelina is none other than Jodi Benson, who gave voice to Ariel in Disney's The Little Mermaid. --Doug Thomas More Info about this DVD

The Swan Princess III - The Mystery of the Enchanted Treasure (Special Edition) DVD

An evil sorceress plans to wreak havoc on Swan Lake by stealing the forbidden arts--a treasure that gives its keeper unlimited power. Odette is kidnapped as part of her master plan, prompting a showdown with Derek. Ambitious in narrative only, this potboiler doesn't look like much in contrast to the first film in the series. It's also a shame the producers couldn't bring back some of the original vocal cast: John Cleese and Steven Wright. --Tom Keogh More Info about this DVD

    Anastasia DVD

Stomping out their usual cuteness and carbon copying Disney's grand animation style to a T, directors Don Bluth and Gary Goldman (An American Tail) create a successful musical comedy from the story of the lost Russian princess. Adapting the story of imperialism and revolution is tricky, and subsequently the film's opening is weak. Once Anya (voiced by Meg Ryan, sung by Liz Callaway) is a teenager and on her own (suffering from some degree of amnesia), the film is quite pleasing though never refreshingly new.

Twentieth Century Fox's big-money gamble to horn in on Disney's realm is worthy. The songs, especially the recurrent "Once Upon a December," by Broadway team Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty are better than Disney's recent efforts. It's worth picking up the soundtrack. The... FernGully - The Last Rainforest DVD

Environmentally friendly animated film with a strong message that doesn't club anyone over the head--but it certainly can't be missed. Zak (voiced by Christian Slater) is a heavy-machine operator whose job is to push over any vegetation in his path. He's shrunken to wee size, however, when Crysta (Samantha Mathis), a fairy of the forest, not only finds him cute but wants him to see the results of his handiwork. They end up battling Hexxus, an evil force imprisoned in a tree, which now wants to destroy all of Ferngully. Robin Williams offers genuine comic relief as a bat named Batty Koda. Agreeable without making much impact, it's a piffle of a film for one that deals with such strong subject matter. --Keith Simanton More Info about this DVD
