DVD Crisscross
Comic actress Goldie Hawn takes a serious turn in the affecting coming-of-age story CrissCross. Hawn (Shampoo, The First Wives Club) plays Tracy Cross, a single mother in Key West, Florida, who turns to stripping to support her son Chris (newcomer David Arnott). Meanwhile, Chris struggles to find himself, faced with a father (Keith Carradine, Choose Me, Nashville) who abandoned him, his mother's new boyfriend (Arliss Howard, Full Metal Jacket), and the temptation of selling drugs. The plot elements may sound melodramatic, but CrissCross keeps everything real with detailed performances, attention to the mundane (but telling) aspects of daily life, and a view of human nature that goes beyond the good-guy/bad-guy simplicity of most movies. CrissCross captures some of the ambiguity of human life, and that's an impressive feat. Also featuring brief appearances by character actors Steve Buscemi, Paul Calderon, and Anna Levine Thomson. --Bret Fetzer
A 'coming of age' movie of sorts, this particular feature is a tad slow for my general taste. However, David Arnott is so incredibly gorgeuos, I find myself watching this one again and again. A good and believable young actor he is as well. I've always enjoyed Goldie Hawn, which makes this one well worth owning in my book.
Crocked Chriscross
So-so movie with so-so acting - think of an unsuccessful cross between one of those many made-for-television grade-B drama films on the Lifetime Channel and an ABC Afterschool Special and you have a general idea what the film is like.
See on cable if you must, don't waste your time renting it out or buying it.
Correction
Just in case anyone is confused, Arliss Howard does not play Goldie Hawn's son. Arliss Howard is an MAN, not a teenage boy.
Fine casting, genuinely special effects, and a keen combination of whimsy and danger make this Peter Pan the one to beat among all previous adaptations of J.M. Barrie's classic children's fantasy. The technical advances of CGI make the magic of Barrie's tale come alive, and the spectacular effects combined with luminous live action create an action-packed Neverland that's both believable and breathtakingly artificial, like a Maxfield Parrish landscape springing vividly to life before your eyes. More important, however, is the fact that director P.J. Hogan (whose splendid films include Muriel's Wedding and My Best Friend's Wedding) has taken care to develop a substantial, pre-adolescent affection between the boyish sprite Peter (Jeremy Sumpter) and resourceful... The story is predictable, the writing sophomoric. Yet I still managed to enjoy it, and I appreciated the performances given by Mark Harmon and especially Jeremy Sumpter as "Skeet". Jeremy is an amazing young actor (check him out in "Frailty" if you haven't already) who brings a natural charm to his character -- he never seems forced or phony. Might even bring a tear to your eye in a couple scenes . ;) Mark Harmon is quite the pro at this kind of thing and a pleasure to watch. Same for most of the rest of the cast. As I said, this is not a masterpiece, but it's an OK little surf-oriented movie with nice cinematography and music, and a decent enough story to hold my interest. Based on a true case that scandalized Canada, this film takes place in two halves. The first, set in the mid-1970s, deals with a Catholic orphanage, run by Brother Lavin (Henry Czerny), who doesn't have the boys' best interest at heart. Rather, he uses them to fuel his own sick sexual desires, becoming a predator in a priest's collar, making an indelible mark on 10-year-old boys. And he's not the only one (just the most vicious). Cut to 1990: One of the now-grown boys comes forward to accuse Lavin and face him in court. But Lavin is now married and the father of two boys--and the church continues to deny that any impropriety occurred. This is strong stuff, with the emotional pain almost harder to take than the shadowy scenes of sexual abuse--but the latter are upsetting as well.... The movie was a sweet story about adorable young white boy growing up in rural NV in 1960. In this story his doctor dad is good for nothing, selfish liar. There is a nasty good for nothing, lowlife, drunken bar regular (who incidently is a white guy). The only other white guys I recall having more than one sentence in the movie (and it may have been collectively) were the film makers who (of course) looked and sounded in general to be a disagreeable lot. The boy spends his summer in a saloon with two male role models from which he gains wisdom and maturity. One a likeable, not overly intellegent Native American with a big heart. The other, the star of the show, portrayed as a very wise, sensitive and caring African-American man who helps the boy through the rough patches. What was... Luchino Visconti's adaptation of the Thomas Mann novel is the very definition of sumptuous: the costumes and sets, the special geography of Venice, and the breathtaking cinematography combine to form a heady experience. At the center of this gorgeousness is Aschenbach (Dirk Bogarde in a meticulous performance), a controlled intellectual who unexpectedly finds himself obsessed by the vision of a 14-year-old boy while on a convalescent vacation in 1911. Visconti has turned Aschenbach into a composer, which accounts for the lush excerpts from Mahler on the soundtrack (Bogarde is meant to look like Mahler, too). Even if it tends to hit the nail on the head a little too forcefully, and even if Visconti can test one's patience with lingering looks at crowds at the beach and hotel dining rooms,...
