PLEASE READ THIS.IT CAN SAVE YOU SOME AGGREVATION

I usually get a DVD give it a quick look then write a review. This time I viewed the whole package before submitting my review. When you get your set carefully remove the discs.Look at the holder behind it.If you see a little plastic protrusion gently scratch it away with your fingernail then wipe clean. I'm glad I caught this in time. I'm sure this would have scratched my set.And probably yours. My set plays perfectly. The bonus features are great.Werewolf of London, Dracula (spanish), Dracula's Daughter, She-Wolf of London, and Son of Dracula, I consider as bonus films, the rest are the meat and potatoes of the set.A few years ago I considered purchasing Dracula on VHS, but the only copy I could find was with the Phillip Glass score. After viewing the disc in all three presentations(No score,Glass, and commentary)I'm glad I left the VHS on the store shelf. There were some interestng motifs, but the constant music detracted from the mood of the film. The Wolf Man documentary confuses me a little. It states Lon Chaney jr. played the Frankenstein monster before playing the Wolf Man.I thought it was the other way around.Speaking of the Wolf Man.It would have made more sense to put House of Frankenstein and House of Dracula on THE WOLF MAN set.Larry Talbot and his moon howling alter ego was the central character with more screen time than Dracula(not played by Lugosi)or Frankenstein(not played by Karloff)but the Wolf Man is portrayed by Lon Chaney jr. Calling the monster Frankenstein should be as acceptable as calling Henry Ford's invention Fords, just as we do anyway.[The menu screens can be a little annoying at first. They all look excatly the same per each monster. So you get a lot of Play Other Disc or Flip Disc Over]. That,I would say is my only complaint. It's sort of like playing CONCENTRATION.The busts are really impressive.and the disc holders are charming and classy as they resemble small hard cover books. AND IT IS SUBTITLED, IN ENGLISH,SPANISH,AND FRENCH with the captions appearing below person speaking(as often as possible).MY SET HAS A PRISTINE PICTURE FOR EVERY FILM.BUY an APEX AD 1200.It's an inexpensive player that's played all my discs beautifully for over 2 years and is still going strong. I wrote a short review on THE HAMMER HORROR COLLECTION emphasising the simaltaneous release dates. It is conspicuously absent, but judging by the Amazon sales rank the longer review went to the winner. If you're into these films as you more than likely are since you've read this far.Buy this set. You'll be glad you did.If not, buy it as a gift for someone who is.They'll think the world of you.IF ONLY GODZILLA COULD GET A TREATMENT THIS SPECTACULAR.

    Close.. but no cigar!!!

This set is great, terrible packaging not withstanding. But, I wish all the films, or at least more of the films, had commentaries. I have the original 8 film collection, and the commentaries are excellent on all of them, and really put that set a rung above this one.

However, it is great to have all these films together in one package, even if some of them are not are not totally restored. There is also a scene missing in Werewolf of London, in which the main character claws the face of the other main character, Dr. Yogami. This was close up, and very extreme for it's time. Check out the trailer, the scene is in that, but not in the film. All of the films are pretty good transfers, with defects only a hardcore dvd critic would notice or care about.

Although I gave this a four star rating, I was a little disapointed that Universal didn't really do this set right, and those Van Helsing Commercials are horrible. Overall, it is worth the money

Lets see the Creature and Invisible man films next Universal, and do it right next time.

    Bravo!

Wonderful films, magnificant music, fascinating documentaries - very high quality for a very low price. The commentary of AgeofAnxiety below says everything about the relative quality of the films. Only one complaint - the conclusion of this story is not in the collection. "Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein" is the final masterpeice that brings Dracula (Lugosi), Frankenstein (Glen Strange), and Wolfman (Lon Chaney) together with far greater success than do the "House of Dracula" and "House of Frankenstein" films shown here. Buy this one as well and enjoy the entire saga!

The Marx Brothers Collection (A Night at The Opera/A Day at The Races/A Night in Casablanca/Room Service/At the Circus/Go West/The Big Store) DVD

When it comes to long-awaited treats like The Marx Brothers Collection, you can never get too much of a good thing. These seven comedies can't compare to the sheer lunacy of the five classics (The Cocoanuts, Animal Crackers, Monkey Business, Horse Feathers, and Duck Soup) that the Marx Bros. made for Paramount between 1929 and 1933 (available in The Marx Brothers Silver Screen Collection), but when uber-producer Irving Thalberg signed Groucho, Harpo, and Chico to an MGM contract in 1935 (by which time sibling costar Zeppo had become the team's off-screen manager), he knew just how to cure their box-office blues. As a result, A Night at the Opera and A Day at the Races were critical and commercial hits, lavishly produced... More Info about this DVD

The Best of Abbott & Costello, Vol. 2 (Hit the Ice / In Society / Here Come the Co-Eds / The Naughty Nineties / Little Giant / The Time of Their Lives / Buck Privates Come Home / The Wistful Widow of Wagon Gap) DVD

I love Abbott and Costello, but these "Best of's" released by Universal are so pathetic it isn't even funny. They are flipper discs, and they are so easily damaged and cheaply made that they aren't good for anybody. I loved the movies in these sets, but come on Universal, stop using these cheap discs and use single sided discs. More Info about this DVD

The Best of Abbott & Costello, Vol. 1 (Buck Privates / Hold That Ghost / In the Navy / Keep 'Em Flying / One Night in the Tropics / Pardon My Sarong / Ride 'Em Cowboy / Who Done It?) DVD

I've become addicted to Abbott and Costello films since discovering this DVD set and the ones that followed. There was a day when comedy was creative, silly, and clean, and that time is captured on these DVDs. Anyone who wants a good laugh should check them out, especially the movies "Hold that Ghost" and "In The Navy." More Info about this DVD

Star Wars Trilogy (Widescreen Edition with Bonus Disc) DVD

Was George Lucas's Star Wars Trilogy, the most anticipated DVD release ever, worth the wait? You bet. It's a must-have for any home theater, looking great, sounding great, and supplemented by generous bonus features.

    The Movies
The Star Wars Trilogy had the rare distinction of becoming a cultural phenomenon, a defining event for its generation. On its surface, George Lucas's story is a rollicking and humorous space fantasy that owes debts to more influences than one can count on two hands, but filmgoers became entranced by... Film Noir Classic Collection (The Asphalt Jungle/Gun Crazy/Murder My Sweet/Out of the Past/The Set-Up) DVD

Some boxed sets claim to be definitive, but are haphazardly selected. Not this one. Four of the five titles here can legitimately lay claim to being essentials in the film noir canon, and the fifth, The Set-Up, is a terrific boxing picture with a strong noir atmosphere. If you're a fan of noir--or have no idea what it's all about--this collection is a treat.

Of course, none of these movies were made as "film noir." The term was coined later by French critics to describe the moody, anxious feel of postwar American movies, especially the genre that highlighted duplicitous dames and susceptible men lost in the criminal jungle. Indeed, the title The Asphalt Jungle conveys the edgy urban arena of these pictures. That film is John Huston's masterly 1950 account of a heist,... More Info about this DVD
