    Intolerance DVD

I have long been a great admirer of this wonderful film, and am always interested in the latest VHS or DVD editions that are made available. The print quality on this Delta release is surprisingly good, making it an excellent value for the curious collector desiring an introduction to D. W. Griffith's 1916 cinema masterpiece. There are several different edited versions of Intolerance that have been produced over the last few years for video, each slightly unique in terms of editing and emissions/additions of key scenes. This Delta DVD version is no exception, with some interesting fadeouts to a couple of scenes that, in some prints, cut abruptly to the next shot. The music that accompanies the film sounds as if it was pieced together from pre-recorded sources, but it works well enough and... More Info about this DVD

    Metropolis DVD

I picked this DVD up at a local store, because I've been meaning to see the movie and it was quite cheap. It's the original 1927 theater cut (I couldn't tell you if the tinting was added later or not), which means it's only a small part of Lang's masterpeice. The plot is, as it was, choppy and hard to follow without reading up on the movie itself. The scenes that were cut seem to have been important, in that you get the general gist of the story with this truncated version, but there are things you won't pick up on unless you watch it repeatedly.

It's a poor version of the classic, but the price is right. If you want to see the masterpeice, buy the restored, authorized edition as was recommended above. If you want to watch a mildly entertaining silent film that sounds like the... More Info about this DVD

The Birth of a Nation DVD

I see posts about this film being racist. It makes one wonder if they actually watched the film. I am not surpised by these comments, of course, because the film is unbiased. The lack of perversion of reality is what makes this film 'racist.' Of course, the morons who have posted here have no understanding of the term and no understanding of the Klans development (amazing considering they claim to have watched the film). The Klan and its modern relationship to the _African-American_ is irrelevant as its enemy was the tryannical Union (in fact the founder, Forrest, left the Klan after it turned to violence- something not mentioned to todays ignorant Americans for obvious reasons). In any event, to those who would shout racism on these reviews and in this world: you owe this film 5... More Info about this DVD

    The Ladykillers DVD

In English comedy at its blackest (and funniest) pitch, this droll 1955 farce finds Alec Guinness in one of his typically deft, chameleon turns as would-be criminal mastermind Professor Marcus. When Marcus's grand plan to pull off a train heist leads him to a strategically situated house occupied by the genteel Mrs. Wilberforce (Katie Johnson), the ensuing masquerade triggers a mordant, even macabre comedy of manners. With Marcus and his rough-hewn cronies (Herbert Lom, Peter Sellers, and Danny Green) posing as a string quartet, and the dear lady's demise seen as the means to their larcenous end, the gang's sinister machinations are consistently, if unwittingly, foiled by the good-hearted, resourceful widow. --Sam Sutherland More Info about this DVD

Around the World in 80 Days (Two-Disc Special Edition) DVD

This Mike Todd production was a star-studded, multi-million dollar extravaganza when first released in 1956. It remains enjoyable family fare, but time has somewhat dulled its shine. Still, it compares favorably to the overly long, TV mini-series starring Pierce Brosnan and Eric Idle.

Elegant David Niven plays the neurotically punctual Phileas Fogg, a British gent who is spurned on by a wager to prove he can travel around the world in 80 days. He is accompanied by his valet, played with persnickety humor by Cantinflas.

Nominated for several Academy Awards, this was written by John Farrow (Mia's dad) and S.J. Perelman, based on Jules Verne's 1873 classic. The fun part is the razzle-dazzle. Todd knew what he was doing with all those exotic locales and over 40 cameo appearances,... More Info about this DVD
