    The Series

All these episodes were funny, but the ones that were the funniest were not included in these. I hope there will be more in the future.

    AN UNJUSTLY FORGOTTEN COMEDIENNE

This is a very pleasant collection of episodes from Joan Davis's TV series. While the writing is seriously uneven, and there are production shortcomings (it looks much more slapdash in execution than such contemporaneous filmed comedy series like Phil Silvers, Lucy, and Burns and Allen) the talent of Joan Davis still glows.... More sardonic than Lucille Ball (and for some of us, more appealing bcause of this), she was just as adept at physical comedy (and Jim Backus provides solid support). ALthough few episodes in this set are wholly satisfying ("Alienation" might be the best) each one contains at least a few shining moments when Miss Davis's comic smarts come through (any female comedy performer could do worse than to study her technique).... It was probably a tactical error not to shoot the show in front of a studio audience (a la Lucy); had the cast had real people reacting to them-- rather than an often annoying laugh track-- the show might have kicked into overdrive....And if you like Joan Davis on TV, be sure to catch her teaming with Abbott and Costello in HOLD THAT GHOST (1941).

    Underappreciated tallents

Joan Davis and Jim Backus star in a very funny sitcom that ran in the early fifties. More subtle than Lucille Ball, but just as wacky, I always preferred Joan...I recently purchased the Fawlty Towers DVDs and was pleased to hear John Cleese mention I Married Joan in an interview on that collection. She was an early influence on him. You can't give much higher praise than that!

    I Married Joan:Classic TV Coll 2 DVD

I just finished watching this DVD set and was pretty impressed. There was only one problem, one of the shows on the first disc had the words not matching the mouths for the last 10 minutes of the program. Otherwise, it was a great set, might have to order Set 1 even though I have most of those programs on VHS. Joan was a great comedian, on par with Lucy with her slapstick antics! My Little Margie - Collection No. 2 DVD

Usually you look back at old programs like the Lone Ranger and think how hokey they were. Then you realize that you, being a kid at the time could enjoy them as they were.

Then there is "Topper" the TV show. It was one big smoking commercial.

Well I sort of counted on this happening with "My Little Margie" (Gale Storm.) Boy was I surprised. The plots are complex for the small period of time they have to execute in. Hokey or not they had me laughing. And Price per pound, you get so many episodes. I am working my way through them all and find some how they are comforting like an old friend. It is fun t spot the different actors in movies and say I saw that person on "My Little Margie."

After viewing, I will put them on the shelf and they look... More Info about this DVD

Private Secretary:Vol 2 TV Series DVD

Alpha releases 4 more classic episodes from Ann Sothern's delightful sitcom PRIVATE SECRETARY. PRIVATE SECRETARY featured Ann Sothern as Susie Camille MacNamara, the secretary to New York talent mogul Peter Sands (Don Porter). However, Susie often gets confused as to the limitations of her job and gets frequently entangled in the lives of Peter and his clients. Snappy dialogue and great comic support is provided by Ann Tyrrell as Susie's workmate Vi Praskins. When the series later went into syndication, the title of the show was inexplicably changed to SUSIE.

With the following episodes (presented under the SUSIE title):

"Cat in a Hot Tin File" - Vi and Susie attempt to keep a stray cat in the office, despite Peter's important new client being allergic. More Info about this DVD
