Review(s): DVD On the Road With Bob Hope and Bing Crosby Collection (Road to Singapore/Road to Zanzibar/Road to Morocco/Road to Utopia)
    A Great Set

If you don't like classic comedy, you're not going to like this either. But for me, this is my first stop when I need to take a break from the Marx Brothers (who I watch way too much). These films are exhibit A for Bob Hope's comedic talents, and Bing's cooler than you or I will ever be. Plus with Bing around, I'm actually happy to listen when the songs come, which is not the case for most 30's and 40's Hollywood films. Morocco is my favorite, but any of these four films can brighten a dark day. There are a few decent extras on this set, and for $20 it's a steal. If you're willing to watch a comedy made before "Animal House," you should go ahead and take the plunge into Hope and Crosby's world.

Great Collection, But Where Are the Other Three?

This collection of the first four Road pictures is well worth having. The picture quality is excellent and all four films are loaded on one double-sided disc. But where are the remaining three Road pictures? This would have made the ultimate Road collection. Disappointing.

    bob and bing are hilarious

bob hope and bing crosby are great together. their antics in these movie are so funny i had to laugh. i have seen these four movies and one other of the "on the road to" movies. they are comical. any classic movie love should love these. it is definately worth the $20.00 i spent on the 4 pack of moives.

    Road to Rio DVD

Every great film has a repeating line, and Road to Rio has that one. It's always been one of my favorites - if not THE favorite - of the road pictures, but maybe the lustre has worn off. Still, "I hate you. I loathe you. I despise you" is a long-time family joke, and this film, if it grabs you at the right moment, is a gem. The musical numbers, as usual, are terrific, and there are so many throw-away lines and sight gags that this "road" is one that should be traveled. More Info about this DVD

The Road to Hong Kong DVD

The Bob Hope/Bing Crosby/Dorothy Lamour "Road" pictures were the most successful film series until someone named James Bond came along. The Road To Hong Kong was a belated final entry - a nice idea but one executed on a miserly budget when the stars were somewhat past their peak. The script roughly follows the dependable formula of the earlier films and, while not as funny or as charming as the classic Road To Morocco, still provides a fair amount of amusement. It is certainly not the overcooked turkey that some people claim.

Cheaply filmed in England in black and white on cardboard sets and with special effects of rocket ships that would have made Ed Wood proud, the film relies a lot on the audience's affection for Hope and Crosby. The interplay and patter of their double... More Info about this DVD

    Road to Bali DVD

    "Road To Bali"

Hope and Crosby..., I could just leave this review at that, their names say it all! But okay, I will fill you in on this little treasure. This is the 6th in the road series films made by our boys. This one made in 1953 was filmed in technicolor.

Bob and Bing are traveling the high seas in this one. They're on the run from Australia, where a pair of irate fathers are after them with shotguns, oops make that boomerangs, to make them keep their promises of marriage to the daughters. The chase is on and they guys wind up taking a job as deep sea divers, hired by some royal islanders. Once there they only have to deal with a giant squid, poison darts, and an evil prince in their escapades. Naturally they both fall for the same girl, the beautiful... More Info about this DVD

Bob Hope Tribute Collection - Sorrowful Jones / The Paleface Double Feature DVD

Here's another disc in the very nicely done Bob Hope Tribute Collection. Again we have trailers and production notes, plus cast and crew bios. Two features for the price of one is always a good deal, and this installment in the set does not disappoint, with two classic Hope pictures, "Sorrowful Jones" and "The Paleface".

Of the two (believe it or not), "Sorrowful Jones" is the real keeper. "The Paleface" is certainly more famous, and pretty funny in its own right as Bob plays a cowardly correspondance school dentist making his way across the Old West. However, the other feature hits the mark every time, while "The Paleface" tends be a bit uneven.

On the other hand, "The Paleface" is pure farce, and introduces the song "Buttons and Bows" (sung here by Bob), that became a smash hit... More Info about this DVD

    Son of Paleface DVD

Bob Hope returned to the wild West in Son of Paleface, mining the rootin' shootin' genre for gag after gag. Hope plays Junior Potter--another variation on his lascivious, cowardly, yet somehow endearing persona--a college boy who's come to California seeking his father's hidden gold. What he finds is an empty treasure chest, a pile of unpaid bills, vengeful Indians, buxom Jane Russell (as a saloon girl by day, wily bandit by night), and singing cowboy Roy Rogers. It's prime silliness, an ancestor to movies like Airplane! that never let a moment go by without an absurd joke. Russell sashays about in spectacular form-fitting outfits, Rogers yodels a few tunes, and Hope snivels and wheedles his way out of endless scrapes. Good-natured slapstick (though its depiction...
