DVD The Silver Stallion
In the mountainous high country above the Australian bush, wild horses run free: Australians call them wild "brumbies." Author Elyne Mitchell's book, The Silver Brumby, on which this movie is based, is about a magnificent silver stallion, Thowra. The story opens on a dark and stormy night in the high country. Elyne (Caroline Goodall), spins a tale to comfort her daughter, Indi (Ami Daemion). The beautiful mare, Bell-Bell, gives birth to Thowra, an exceptional cream-colored foal, with a mane and tail that gleam silver in the moonlight. We see Thowra grow up through several seasons. Winter has its hardships; the herds of horses find survival difficult in the snow-packed mountains. But summer may be even more dangerous, for that's when men return to the high country to try to catch the brumbies and cruelly break them of their wildness. For one man (called simply "The Man" in Elyne's story), capturing Thowra, now king of all the brumbies, becomes an obsession. The Man is played by Russell Crowe, whose usual fine acting is enhanced here by impressive horsemanship. The struggle between Thowra and The Man takes on mythic proportions, building to a haunting climax. Gorgeous footage of wild horses running and rearing in the mountains make this the perfect movie for horse-lovers of all ages. We come to care deeply about the fate of these splendid creatures, whose wisdom and passion are rivaled only by their beauty. --Laura Mirsky
Based on previous reviews, you would have thought this was another MAN FROM SNOWY RIVER: it's not, not by a long shot. I watched SNOWY after wading through this one, and was amazed at how much better it was. It's not that the horses aren't amazing - they are. But the story is weak, the cinematography is undistinguished, and this desperately needs a wide screen. I have to agree with another reviewer that this is a B movie.
On the other hand, Caroline Goodall turns in a wonderful performance as a writer creating a story about a silver stallion that has become a legend in the outback of Australia. She narrates parts of the story almost as if she were telling it around a campfire at night, so that it has a certain eerie quality. Ami Daemion is enjoyable as her daughter, reading her mother's story as she completes it in chunks, and becoming more and more obsessed with the horse. Russell Crowe plays a rancher bent on catching the silver stallion, and in his usual, likeable way is entertaining in this early performance of his career. Unfortunately, he gets little more to do than show off his riding abilities, because the real stars of the movie are the horses.
This film has some excellent horse work, except for the fight sequences between the ruling stallions, which are little more than dances. Nevertheless, as animal actors, they're wonderful. If I had it to do over, I would have given this film three stars instead of two, because it is a sweet story to snuggle up with the family on a weekend afternoon. I think pre-teen girls and any horse-lover will especially love it.

The Silver Stallion - King of the Wild Brumbies
This is an excellent story! Nice narration from Caroline Goodall and breath-taking camera action result in the obvious...a horse lover's movie of the year! Thowra is truly an untamed spirit, fuled by his illogical rage towards all men. Or at least one in particular. You will love this movie! I guarantee it.
Beautiful!!!!
This movie is one of my favorites. It is haunting and beautifully told! There is no movie like it and I recommend it to anybody!
A pre-superstardom Russell Crowe brings enough leading-man wattage to this modest Canadian drama to light all of Manitoba. Set in the prairie country above Minnesota in 1942, For the Moment's wartime romance stars Crowe as Lachlan, a rakish Australian pilot signed on to the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan, which trains fliers for combat duty. With an average life expectancy of the program's graduates no more than six weeks, Lachlan wastes no time wooing the attractive and lonely Lill (Christianne Hirt), wife of a farmer-turned-soldier serving overseas. The two fall in love, and their touching if secretive affair serves as a counterpoint to a more public, and tender, romance between the town's prostitute and Lachlan's commanding officer. Set in northern Africa at the beginning of World War I, this unusual movie is narrated by a horse, voiced by Lukas Haas (Witness). While the gambit works for the most part, let's face it, some sentences ("I had to find my place in the world") just sound silly coming from equine lips. Lucky, as he will be called, is born on an African-bound ship but is separated from his mother when the horses swim for shore and the new colt simply can't keep up. While mom and the rest of the gang are to work in the mines, Lucky is discovered by a young orphan who works as a stable hand. The mother-son pair are briefly reunited, but the stable's stallion, Caesar, fatally injures her. The high-born Caesar also prevents his own foal, Beauty, from seeing Lucky and eventually forces the colt out on his... Created as an IMAX movie based on the novel by father/son team Walter and Steven Farley, Disney's Young Black Stallion tells the story of a wild colt who befriends a young girl in the Arabian desert, eventually becoming her equine soul mate and champion racehorse. Set in 1946 North Africa, the story begins as Neera gets separated from her desert caravan by an ambush of soldiers. Alone and lost, she discovers a colt among the drifts and, in time, they forge a friendship of interdependence. The spirited horse and child ride like the wind, yet when they arrive home, the colt bolts, leaving Neera to convince her grandfather that the legendary stallion is more than a mirage. Ultimately, she proves this in a climatic action sequence brimming with girl power. The cinematography dazzles... This video was given as a gift to a "horse crazy" 5 year old who watches it constantly. She learns something new each time....and very seriously told me yesterday that you couldn't speak to your horse during a "Pressage" test. Excellent learning video for kids! A humane, well-observed coming-of-age tale set in the Australian outback, Hammers over the Anvil details with gentle frankness the growing self-awareness of Alan Marshall (Alexander Outhred), a boy whose dreams of riding a horse are hampered as much by his dull shopkeeper father as by the braces on Alan's crippled legs. Alan's idealized role model is the tanned and rugged East Driscoll (Russell Crowe), a friendly but solitary man given to lonely midnight rides, whose individuality and happy embrace of nature seem, to the budding young writer, nearly pagan. (The opening scene of the film is of East merrily splashing about naked in a stream with his horses, with Alan gazing on admiringly.) East is the sort of good-natured, simple soul who thinks nothing of calling the young man...
