I thought this was a sweet love story, regardless of the ages of the participants.
Poignant May/December romance
Superb film. Eastwood captures the good and bad in this romance between 50ish Frank and Breezy (18). Realistically portrays the guilt Frank feels. This one has a happy ending, so different from most similar stories.
Wisdom & Happiness
One of Clint Eastwood's early yet still obscure directorial efforts, "Breezy" gently and charmingly explores the nature of wisdom, which can be present in the most unusual of people and the real meaning of happiness, which is usually found in the oddest and least-expected of places, usually when one is not looking for it.
Amid the smoldering cultural wreckage of the recently-ended 1960s with its nagging remnants of the shrill "don't trust anyone over 30" crowd and the seemingly still-unbridgeable "generation gap," which had left many men and women from all age groups deeply confused, adrift and alienated, the odd and quirky relationship between the youthful, Ophelia-like Edith Alice "Breezy" Breezerman (Lenz) and the cynical, middle-aged Frank Harmon (Holden) successfully and simultaneously reveals several very simple but still frequently-ignored truths; that wisdom and insight are not necessarily the sole province of the "aged" and that a carefree, happy spontaneity isn't and shouldn't be automatically restricted to the "young." And, more subtly, we also are quietly reminded that neither wisdom nor happiness can realistically exist isolated from one another and that the bitter memories and unpleasant experiences of our own respective pasts can often tragically keep us from getting what we truly want and need the most.
Like the Italian neo-realist director Sergio Leone, in whose classic "spaghetti westerns" the eponymous "man with no name" successfully toiled in the 1960s, director Eastwood slowly and deliberately unfolds the personalities of the film's characters (warts and all) but does not self-consciously over-present or stereotype them, which adds to the power, insight and poignancy of this understated and well-produced film, topical, yes, but in its own way, timeless, one head and shoulders above such glittery, simpleminded and laughably stereotypical trash like "Pretty Woman."
An excellently realised film focusing on that ever so mysterious relations between men and women. Especially those that are tainted by personal gain, manupilation, lies, deceipt, lust, jelousy, revenge and a pile of control issues. This dark, gothic all- girls boarding house is well occupied by the brilliant leads (as well as an outstanding cast of assorted fine young actresses): a very handsome Clint Eastwood ( as a handicapped soldier fresh from battle and eventually a very compromised object of desire) and the rare, unique and gifted Geraldine Page as the ruthless headmistress with some scandalous secrets to hide. Clint Eastwood's moody, evocative direction and Forest Whitaker's strong, sensitive performance are the chief proponents to recommend an otherwise muted biopic of '40s jazz legend Charlie Parker, who fell victim to his chemical excesses and convinced the doctor who pronounced him dead that he was a good four decades older than he actually was. The film doesn't try to assign clear blame for Parker's demons, though the era's racism is addressed unflinchingly. Clearly a labor of love, Eastwood's movie structurally attempts to ape the angular music of bebop itself (there are flashbacks within flashbacks, which gets a little confusing), but doesn't quite capture the smolder of the period. Clint Eastwood (making his very assured directorial debut) is a poetry-spouting stud-muffin DJ stalked by a maniacally amorous fan after a misguided one-night stand in this enjoyably schlocky, undeniably effective film about good intentions gone murderously wacky. Although many of the very '70s trappings presented here may ultimately be too dated to be taken seriously (including a very self-indulgent jazz number and a hilariously gooey seduction number between Eastwood and Donna Mills), the core premise of infatuation taken out of bounds remains uncomfortably plausible--and was influential enough to be appropriated by one of the biggest hits of the '80s. The best part of this movie is without a doubt Clint Eastwood. He brings style and power to the role of an ex-con roving the countryside with his merry band of misfit rodeo clowns. I'll tell you right now that I can't stand Sandra Loche, but she does play an excellent .... I think this film owes a lot to George Romero's Knighriders. The real life toils of traveling carnivals is at the core of this film. Bronco Billy beleives in bringing joy to his "liddle pardners" that come out to see the show. His affection for the children is very contageous and is the reason his friends stay with him despite being completely broke.
