Don't waste your time or money on this one. With Goldie Hawn and Giancarlo Giannini together (two of my all time favorites and both very funny people and fine actors, I thought this would be one hysterical movie, but I was wrong. It is not a comedy at all, and you will be very dissapointed if that is what you are expecting. Also, the quality of the video is not good. It's very dark.
Goldie's Best!
This is a weird little, low-budget, foreign film that oddly enough is the best movie I've ever seen Goldie Hawn in. My wife is a big fan of Goldie, so--by osmosis--I've ended up seeing her in all her movies, and I swear, this one is funniest, in a low key sort of way. It's about this world-weary, chain smoker, bag-eyed, married guy, who drives to his dad's house (the dad is dying) and takes Goldie along--he finds her at his mistress's house. The movie has got this nice lightness/feshness/breeziness to it--that most movies no longer have, and you get odd pretty glimpses of Italy as it was 30 years ago. The DVD unfortunately isn't wide screen, the print is less than spectacular, the soundtrack sounds like it has been badly dubbed, there is no scatalogical humor, there are no wonderful special features, but oddly enough you will feel utterly wonderfully, satisfied, and amused, when you finish with this charming little DVD.
The best that can be said for There's a Girl in My Soup is that it is not quite as bad as its reputation. A belly flop in the careers of Peter Sellers and Goldie Hawn (she was fresh off her Oscar® for Cactus Flower), this Boulting brothers production did nothing to showcase the sparkling comic talents of those two performers. Sellers has some nice moments early as a famous TV-host twit, whose career as a serial seducer is halted after meeting hippie chick Goldie. It's one double-entendre after another: "You only want one thing," says one of Sellers's conquests. "Yes, but what a lovely thing," he sighs. Seen now, the movie is most fun for its goofy look at the gestalt of swinging London: Sellers' automated bachelor pad was surely an inspiration to the Austin... Goldie accidently saves a middle-eastern politician from a gunshot,and is suddenly thrusted into the media,becomes a media darling,and hired on by the U.S. Govt.,who try to "sell" her(without her knowledge) to the man she helped save,to become one of his MANY wives,in exchange for some Nuclear bombs. Not only does this film take shots at the stupidity of the media,and the shaddy dealings of our own Government, it is an abosolutly funny funny movie! Goldie is HILLARIOUS as Sunny Davis,cocktail waitress,turned media hero. One of my all-time fave Goldie Hawn movies,this one's a definate keeper! Peace and love, but not quite this much. Romantic comedy "Cactus Flower" is flirty, frothy and very amusing (not to mention it's nice to see a gal in her fifties shown as being attractive by the movie industry). It's predictable and lacking in twists, but it's entertaining by itself.
Bachelor dentist Julian Winston (Walter Matthau) met the ditzy but sweet Toni (Goldie Hawn) a year ago, but to avoid the looming threat of commitment, he claimed he was married with three kids. But Toni tries to commit suicide -- a faulty attempt botched by her attractive playwright neighbor Igor (Rick Lenz). When Julian learns of it, he decides to marry her, and pretends that he's getting a divorce from the wife he doesn't have. Small problem: Toni wants to meet her personally.
