This two DVD set is excellent. It is short, but does justice to a Great President. The first DVD covers his movie career, and the second covers his political career. Outstanding summaries.
Ronald Reagan: A Legacy Remembered uses interviews with Reagan's family, cabinet members, and political peers (including Mikhail Gorbachev) to paint a personal portrait as much as a political one. Home movies and photographs give clues into his difficult childhood and young adulthood, while a vast body of archival footage captures his film and television career (including commercials, in which he pitched appliances with the same smooth style he would later apply to the Republican agenda) and his political rise from governor of California to president of the United States. The program argues that Reagan was more than a handsome face mouthing the words of others, but also concedes that he led with big ideas (Communism must be destroyed, taxes must be cut) and had little... Calling this a tribute hardly does it justice: it's an exercise in absolute hero worship. The program presents, in no particular order, the major events of Ronald Reagan's presidency, making use of film shot during the Hollywood-type productions at which Reagan's media advisors excelled as well as news footage of such events as the Grenada invasion and the assassination attempt by John Hinckley. Reagan's early life in Hollywood is also covered, though the choice of film clips is at times mystifying. At one point Kate Smith performs her trademark "God Bless America" in its entirety, though what, if anything, that has to do with Reagan's film career is never explained, and a lengthy showstopper from a musical in which Reagan had a bit part is also shown in its entirety, though Reagan... I think some of the other reviewers did not actually watch this DVD! It has ALL the great moments of Reagan's presidency (Inauguration, Evil Empire, Challenger, D-Day, along with lots of great jokes, including the age joke in the debate against Mondale, etc... etc..., including virtually all that another reviewer claimed was missing). The only speeches of import that are missing are from BEFORE his Presidency, which is implied by the subtitle: A President's Greatest Moments. It even has the entire tribute film that celebrated his great Presidency at the '96 convention. For anyone looking for an inspiring and uplifting compilation of all the highlights - and one that moved my staunch Democrat mom to tears - this is it! Ronald Reagan: The Great Communicator edits together over 100 clips of Ronald Reagan speaking--including television appearances, press conferences, addresses of Congress and the U.N., speeches at political conventions, and even a few snippets from his movie career--into four 90- to 120-minute themed retrospectives: One is an overview of his presidential career; one portrays his stance against the Soviet Union; one pulls together his inspirational view of America; and one is devoted to his humor. There's no narration or interviews with other politicians or aides; this is 100%, pure unadulterated Reagan, boiled down to pithy, punchy sound bites (as well as an archive of 28 lengthier excerpts). Pop-up boxes provide a smidgeon of historical context and there is nothing ... More Info about this DVD Actor(s): Ronald Reagan DVD Release Date: Released the 15 June 2004 Usually ships in 24 hours

Both loved and reviled, Ronald "Dutch" Reagan rose out of the political ashes of Watergate to become one of the most popular presidents in American history. Whether you like it or not, he will be remembered along with Franklin Delano Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy as one of the most influential and charismatic political figures of the 20th century. This epic four-and-a-half-hour documentary shows why, and it benefits greatly from the fact that many of the participants in the documented events are still alive. Tape 1 chronicles his troubled childhood with an alcoholic father, his years as a lifeguard, his eventual stardom in Hollywood, his governorship of California, and his election to the presidency in 1980. Tape 2 picks up shortly after the assassination attempt and takes off as it... More Info about this DVD DVD Release Date: Released the 12 August 2003 Usually ships within 24 hours
