The world's full of lonely people

Patrick Dempsey had an usual niche in the 80s teen comedy, as did the characters he played. He was the lovable loser who just wanted to fit in, somehow ends up getting caught up in some smutty encounter or another on his quest for acceptance, but is well liked and tended to have everything mostly work out for him in the end. Here was no acception.

He plays the lovable loser once again, this time he was an arrogant, cocky kid who blew his education by doing nothing but partying at college. Disappointed and angry at his failing grades, his parents decide to stop supporting him and he is forced into the minimum wage workforce at a pizza place. While Patrick is thoughly miserable working for slave labor, he encounters a beautiful, mysterious stranger who (like the plot to a bad porn movie) makes his job worth while with no strings attached. While this fleeting encounter might have ended there, the mysterious stranger talked with her women friends about this, and soon Patrick is working as a gigalo under the guise of a pizza delivery guy. The smutty adventures and hilarity ensue after that. Long before Desperate Housewives he was their Afternoon Delight.

What was amazing to me in watching this movie is that Patrick didn't have sex with all the women clients he eventually aquires. He is simply a friend, a companion, someone to talk with. I guess I just don't understand why some of the women he was servicing didn't try talking with their husbands about what was bothering them rather than letting this situation come to a head. Of course, as infidelity is an ugly thing no matter how many screwball slapstick antics you apply to it like this movie did, it all comes crashing down on him when his mother rings up for some loving. That's an urban ledgend if there ever was one.

I gave this only 2 stars because the happily ever after ending was too hoaky for words. Still, it is a commentary on the world being full of lonely people.

    Master OF The LASERDISCS Movies

Patrick Dempsey's The King OF The 80's HighSchool romantic movies,,LOVERBOY is That kinda Movie that you aint gonna Forget ,I own it on LASERDISC And I bought it on DVD too,

    Loverboy

This is a great flick. Very enjoyable. A must for all "teen flick" collectors. HOWEVER, whoever is responsible for pricing this DVD needs their head examined. I saw this when it was first released and will purchase it on DVD when the price comes WAY DOWN to the "realm of reason". Until then, rent it! Its a great movie, but not even worth close to the asking price.

    Can't Buy Me Love DVD

This statement can probably best describe Patrick Dempsey currently, but those who remember him in his earlier works only associate it with "Can't Buy Me Love". Dempsey stars in the story of a nerd who buys himself popularity only to fall in too deep with his new inflated ego. With countless memorable scenes and a touching (and yes corny) ending, this movie is clearly up there as far as teen 80's flicks. Dempsey shines as the desperate Ronald Miller looking for what he believes will provide happiness. His goofy ways are ever present in the big dance where he "introduces" the school to a new dance. Amanda Peterson and Courtney Gains round out a solid cast. More Info about this DVD

Just One of the Guys DVD

Though marketed as a raunchy teen sex comedy à la Porky's, Just One of the Guys is an amusing and well-acted comic riff on gender roles. Believing that she's lost a journalism contest because she's a woman, high school student Joyce Hyser disguises herself as a boy in order to see how the other half lives. Her investigation leads her to discover some interesting truths about how men and women treat each other in social and romantic situations. The screenplay by coproducers Jeff Franklin (a veteran TV scribe) and Dennis Feldman nicely balances the sex-driven gags with more character-driven material, which is well delivered by Hyser, Clayton Rohner as her eccentric pal, and especially Billy Jacoby as her perpetually aroused brother; the capable cast also includes... License to Drive (Special Edition) DVD

The brief 1980s mania surrounding "the Coreys" peaked with License to Drive, a modest but surprisingly still enjoyable adventure comedy. Les (Corey Haim, Lucas) has a chance to date his dream girl, Mercedes (Heather Graham, Boogie Nights, in her first significant movie role)--but he's just failed his driving exam. Motivated by a mixture of pride and hormones, he steals his grandfather's Cadillac and heads out on the town with Mercedes for a night that swiftly becomes an escalating series of disasters, made worse by the foolhardy antics of Les' best friend Dean (Corey Feldman, Stand by Me). Despite some egregious '80s fashion disasters (Graham gets the worst of them), License to Drive holds up surprisingly well--it's no work of genius, but it is a solidly... More Info about this DVD

    Secret Admirer DVD

In the brief flower of his teen idolhood, C. Thomas Howell starred in this unexpectedly mature teen comedy. High school loser Michael (Howell) receives an unsigned love note and hopes it's from the queen of the social scene, Debbie (Kelly Preston). When Debbie brushes him off, his best friend Toni (Lori Loughlin) convinces him to send her an anonymous note of his own--only Toni, who's so in love with Michael that she wants him to be happy, rewrites his clumsy fumblings into romantic prose, and Debbie swoons. Meanwhile, the first note has fallen into other hands, setting off misguided passion among the kids' parents. Secret Admirer could have been familiar fluff, but the plot keeps taking unexpected turns, tweaking the clichés of the teen genre with a dose of reality.... More Info about this DVD

    Summer School DVD

A weak, lazy comedy about an easygoing teacher (Mark Harmon, whose movie career never had the kind of trajectory that his TV work did) who is forced to teach--you guessed it--summer school. What's worse, he gets exactly the kind of kids you'd expect: the losers and slackers who are forced to make up the work they didn't complete during the year. He tries to duck work and let them fend for themselves. But in this mushy Carl Reiner film, the teacher offers some life lessons to his band of delinquents and--surprise, surprise--the kids impart a lesson or two to their teacher, as well. Harmon coasts through the film on his good looks, which are considerable. --Marshall Fine More Info about this DVD
