DVD The Thin Blue Line - The Complete Line-Up
Set in a fictitious British suburb, The Thin Blue Line is the wickedly funny story of a rather down-at-heel police station headed by Inspector Raymond Fowler (Rowan Atkinson, best known as Mr. Bean), a pompous, repressed but well-intentioned anachronism who wants to do the right thing but who is constantly hampered by his own shortcomings, not to mention his blundering Criminal Investigation Department colleagues. Atkinson expertly balances his character's inflated sense of self-importance with the insight born of old-school police values, for which his galumphing, shiny-suited CID counterpart, DI Grim (David Haig) has no time at all. Strongest among the supporting cast is Sgt. Pauline Dawkins (Serena Evans), who also happens to be Fowler's live-in lover--a moral dilemma that his traditional values won't allow him to resolve. He salves his conscience by avoiding sex with her whenever possible, an amusing subplot enhanced by Evans's brilliant performance--she positively vibrates with contained, ladylike lust in a manner only equaled by Penelope Keith in the classic sitcom To the Manor Born. Scripted by Ben Elton, this series manages to satirize provincialism, institutionalized pig-headedness, and dated moral values in one fell swoop, while also being chock-full of quick-fire, Black Adder-esque dialogue. --Roger Thomas

Wife's appreciation
My wife is a big fan of some British comedies, as seen on TV. With the purchase of the Thin Blue Line DVD, she can view these stories on her own time. PBS has too many breaks to fully enjoy the stories.
Funny British Comedy
Bean's Rowan Atkinson stars in yet another funny British show. The Thin Blue Line is one of my favorite sitcoms, loaded with tons and tons of the funniest jokes you will ever here. Just to warn you, this whow may not be as appropriate as some parents would like.
ROWAN ATKINSON - MAY YOUR TRIBE INCREASE!!!
Why is it that the very best of British Television Comedy has such a small number of episodes (Fawlty Towers, Yes Minister, Yes Prime Minister, and now the Thin Blue Line).
Rowan Atkinson is, without doubt, the funniest man in British Comedy after John Cleese (or is it the other way around??).. In any case, he is an extremely versatile actor, ranging from the gormless Mr. Bean to the foul-tongued schoolmaster in his stand-up comedy routine, to Inspector Fowler in this series. His "straight" character is played to perfection, with perfect timing & amazing effect!! The matchless script by Ben Elton, of course, makes every character a gem...Inspector Grim, Constable Goody, Mina Anwar as Constable Habib, et al.
This series is an absolute must-have for any fan of humour, and I could not recommend it more.
How about a third season, eh Rowan, eh Ben???

One of the best comedy series ever to emerge from England, Black Adder traces the deeply cynical and self-serving lineage of various Edmund Blackadders from the muck of the Middle Ages to the frontline of World War I. In his pre-Bean triumph, British comic actor Rowan Atkinson played all five versions of Edmund, beginning with the villainous and cowardly Duke of Edinburgh, whose scheming mind and awful haircut seem to stand him in good stead to become the next Archbishop of Canterbury--a deadly occupation if ever there was one. Among tales of royal dethronings, Black Death, witch smellers (who root out spell makers with their noses), and ghosts, Edmund is a perennial survivor who never quite gets ahead in multiple episodes. Jump to the Elizabethan era and Atkinson picks up... The central character of 'Allo 'Allo, a cafe owner in occupied France during World War II, is cowardly, venal, adulterous, and yet ineffably charming, thanks to the whimsical performance of Gorden Kaye. Rene (Kaye) helps the local Nazi commandant hide a valuable painting of a bare-breasted Madonna, helps the local Resistance hide British airmen until they can be smuggled back to England, and helps himself to the lovely charms of his two waitresses, Yvette (Vicki Michelle) and Maria (Francesca Gonshaw). The farce flies fast and thick; the Nazis are greedy clods, the Resistance fighters are neurotic obsessives, and the British airmen are jaunty dimwits--'Allo 'Allo cheerfully offends everyone, including old people, homosexuals, and onion sellers. The humor isn't subtle, but... More Info about this DVD Director(s): John B. Basil Fawlty, as created and performed by John Cleese, is the rudest, most boorish, most hilariously obnoxious man on the face of the planet. What a natural for a TV sitcom! His screen wife, Sybil (Prunella Scales), put it best in the episode "The Psychiatrist": "You're either crawling all over them, licking their boots, or spitting poison at them like some Benzedrine puff adder." He mockingly replies, "Just trying to enjoy myself, dear." With his gangly frame and contortionist abilities, Cleese brilliantly punctuates Basil's outrageous faux pas with absurd gymnastics and turns Three Stooges-style pokes and kicks into a slapstick ballet. Scales's Sybil is the genial but obliviously chatty voice of reason and Andrew Sachs mangles the English language as the Spanish bellhop Manuel, whose... The sleepy English village of Dibley gets shaken up when their new vicar turns out to be a woman--and not just any woman, but Geraldine Granger, played by Dawn French of the peerless comedy duo French & Saunders. With wit and warmth, Gerry swiftly trumped her parishioner's chauvinism and turned British sitcom The Vicar of Dibley into a cult favorite. Over the course of 16 episodes and specials, Gerry grappled with everything from a broken church window to getting smeared in the tabloids, from the demise of the Easter Bunny to the possible destruction of the village. While The Vicar of Dibley routinely trafficked in the absurd--pop star Kylie Minogue happens to drop by, just when she's most needed--at its best, the show found its greatest absurdity (and its ...
