DVD The Enemy Below
In The Enemy Below Robert Mitchum and Curt Jurgens are respectively captains of a U.S. destroyer and a German U-boat whose vessels come into conflict in the South Atlantic. Both are good men with a job to do, the script noting Jurgens' distaste for Hitler and the Nazis and engaging our sympathy with the German sailors almost as much as the Americans. Made at the height of the cold war of the 1950s, the film delivers a liberal message of co-operation wrapped inside some spectacular action scenes and a story which builds to a tense and exciting, moving finale. --Gary S. Dalkin
Curt Jurgens plays wily but war weary German U boat commandant Von Stolberg on patrol with his crew in the South Atlantic. His critical mission is to transport a captured English code book back to his base. He encounters an American destroyer commanded by newly appointed Capt. Murrell played by an authoritative and determined Robert Mitchum.
What ensues is a nerve wracking, tension filled game of cat and mouse between Jurgens and Mitchum in the Dick Powell produced and directed "The Enemy Below". The movie's effectiveness in part is based on a minimum of propaganda and a focus on the strain and determination of the combatants. Each captain and crew is pulling out all stops to complete their mission and thwart their opponent.
The climax results in a mid ocean collision destroying both vessels, where both crews colloborate to rescue the survivors. This wartime epic is realistically presented as enemies are seen as compassionate rather than robotic automatons carrying out orders without question.
This flick garnered an Oscar for its special effects which is rightly deserved.
WWII Navy at it's best!
This is a WWII classic about the US Navy versus a German U-Boat in the Atlantic. The film is evenly balanced with no flag waving for either side and keeps you on the edge of your seat from the opening to end. A Sea story at it's best. Supurb performances by Mitchum and Jergens. You won't be sorry.
The Enemy Below
I like WW2 stories and this is a great one.
Glad you have it available.
Enjoyed it very much

Sink the Bismarck! recounts one of the most famous battles in the history of naval warfare. Shot in semidocumentary style, the black-and-white film covers all sides in the famous hunt for the powerful German warship that terrorized the sea for eight days. The story and combat are rendered as faithfully as possible to C.S. Forester's novel. There are a few historical errors and some other minor liberties taken for dramatic license, both of which the viewer will easily be able to overlook. The only major addition to historical fact is a fictional romance between leads Kenneth More and Dana Wynter, which never gets in the way of the action. Edward R. Murrow cameos, and one of the founding fathers of movie magic, Howard Lydecker, assists with the special effects. The film is... A movie's lasting value can often be measured by its influence in the years and decades following its original release, and on that basis Run Silent, Run Deep is certainly a classic of sorts. It remains one of the seminal World War II submarine pictures, and its intelligent script and tautly executed action are clearly echoed in such later submarine dramas as Das Boot and especially Crimson Tide, which borrows liberally from this 1958 film.
In one of his best and final roles (he appeared in only four films after this), Clark Gable plays a submarine captain without a command, having been saddled with a desk job after his previous ship was destroyed due to his overzealous pursuit of the enemy in dangerous Japanese waters. He finally gets another... More Info about this DVD Actor(s): Clark Gable - Burt Lancaster Director(s): Robert Wise DVD Release Date: Released the 15 August 2001 Usually ships in 24 hours

The offbeat casting of Cary Grant as a submarine captain pays off in this tense WWII underwater picture; he ably trades in his sophistication for the sweaty close quarters of an action movie. The mission? Infiltrate the mined harbor of Tokyo itself, a feat bookended by a brief confrontation in the Aleutians and a depth-charge chase through the open sea. Skipper Grant is supported by the usual stock crew of Navy melting-pot types, with John Garfield drawing duty as the resident dame-crazy fantasist. (Somebody forgot to put the saltpeter in his chow, apparently.) The solid action alternates with dialogue that tends toward the schmaltzy or jingoistic (the movie's become somewhat notorious for its unusually nasty propagandistic jabs at the Japanese enemy). Destination Tokyo was the... More Info about this DVD Actor(s): Cary Grant - John Garfield Director(s): Delmer Daves DVD Release Date: Released the 01 June 2004 Usually ships in 24 hours

The wartime memories of surviving World War II bomber squadrons were still crystal clear when this acclaimed drama was released in 1949--one of the first postwar films out of Hollywood to treat the war on emotionally complex terms. Framed by a postwar prologue and epilogue and told as a flashback appreciation of wartime valor and teamwork, the film stars Gregory Peck in one of his finest performances as a callous general who assumes command of a bomber squadron based in England. At first, the new commander has little rapport with the 918th Bomber Group, whose loyalties still belong with their previous commander. As they continue to fly dangerous missions over Germany, however, the group and their new leader develop mutual respect and admiration, until the once-alienated commander feels... Oliver Cromwell Jones, the black cook, is given a lot of screen time and the screen play treats him as an integral part of the mission. He is played by Ben Carter, one of the actors profiled in Donald Bogle's recent book BRIGHT BOULEVARDS, BOLD DREAMS; he was the agent for black Los Angeles actors who got in trouble with his clients because he often took the best parts and played them himself! This is definitely one of those cases, for he has a scene with James Gleason for which he should have been nominated for an Oscar, he's so good in the part--and it isn't one of Hollywood's wretched racially stereotypical parts, but one with real human feeling, dignity, comedy all mixed together. Gleason is super too.
However the picture really belongs to its headlining trio of stars,... More Info about this DVD Director(s): Archie Mayo DVD Release Date: Released the 25 May 2004 Usually ships in 24 hours
