Even when she's playing a girl with a head full of air in a plot full of holes, Mandy Moore manages to make Chasing Liberty wholesomely appealing. It's too bad that "wholesome," in this case, means frolicking around Prague, Venice, and Berlin as the U.S. President's daughter, eluding Secret Service agents, defying her second-term President father (Mark Harmon, totally miscast), and trusting complete strangers in a world where potential terrorism seems like nothing more than a pesky distraction. In other words, first daughter Anna Foster (Moore) is a complete idiot, oblivious to danger in a fluffy romantic fantasy that's part Roman Holiday (the good part) and part bubble-gum star vehicle. Don't blame Mandy for daring to shed her good-girl image; even her innocent skinnydipping scene was handled by a "butt double," and she's irresistible as she falls for the mutually smitten Secret Service agent (promising newcomer Matthew Goode) assigned to keep her out of harm's way. Another budding romance involving two bickering agents (Annabella Sciorra, Jeremy Piven) is perfunctory at best, but if you're looking for a picturesque, sweet-natured tour of Europe with a pair of likeable lovebirds, Chasing Liberty makes for a pleasantly brief vacation. --Jeff Shannon

Review(s): DVD Chasing Liberty (Widescreen Edition)
i tried to stay up as far as i could

I adore Mandy Moore and think she's very talented but I agree with everyone who said this isn't her best performance. I patiently waited for something that would make me think differently of the movie, but I could actually predict what would happen. I didn't think there was any chemistry between Mandy and Matthew Goode -- they are both attractive on their own, but not together. I've always thought the world of European scenery, but not this time. Too obvious, too Americanized, not good.

    Go to the dentist instead

Let's see here... The president's daughter wants to rebel, so her dad has an undercover secret service officer pretend to be some random European dude that's interested in her. They fall in love, but you know there will be trouble if and when she find out. Will she? Of course you know the answer, and what'll happen next.

Terrible Terrible Terrible movie. I should've gone to the dentist instead. What was I thinking watching this? Can I have my 2 hours back?

A pleasant surprise, and definitely worth a look

Let me start my review by stating that I think Mandy Moore is actually a wonderful talent. She has the voice of an angel, the beauty of a model, and acting chops that, while still being honed, show tremendous promise. Her performances in "How To Deal", and moreover in "A Walk To Remember" showcase that of a young lady who will, hopefully, be entertaining audiences for many years to come. Many people will discount this movie because of her bubblegum pop music past; they should not.

The film largely takes place with a European backdrop, including some great scenery. The soundtrack was also well chosen, and had some familiar songs, as well as new songs that fit the mood of the scenes that they were in. In terms of the acting, I feel as if I graded this movie fairly. Mark Harmon and newcomer Matthew Goode turn in solid efforts. No one should be expecting the words "Chasing Liberty" to follow the words "...and the Oscar goes to", but most people realize that, and will appreciate this movie for what it is : a fun, light-hearted picture.

This movie is nothing terribly original, but it has some new premises, and even a couple of twists throughout the movie that should keep you interested. There are also some funny, light-hearted moments that should evoke a chuckle or two from you. It is not a cinema classic, but it accomplishes its goal of being entertaining for a wide audience.

I am admittedly biased, but this movie is worth the price for Mandy Moore alone. I hope that she will begin to take on more challenging acting roles in the future. I, for one, am looking forward to watching her career blossom. However, until the Academy calls Mandy's name, enjoy "Chasing Liberty".

The Prince and Me (Widescreen Edition) DVD

The classic girlhood fantasy of marrying a handsome prince is given a surprisingly realistic and subtle treatment in The Prince and Me. A pre-med student at the University of Wisconsin named Paige (Julia Stiles, 10 Things I Hate About You, Mona Lisa Smile) collides with a lazy, presumptuous exchange student named Eddie (Luke Mably, 28 Days Later) and, after a prickly beginning, falls in love with him--only to discover that Eddie is Edvard, the Crown Prince of Denmark. The scenario is pure wish-fulfillment, but director Martha Coolidge (Valley Girl, Rambling Rose) not only takes a closer look at what royal life is really like, she also takes the time to turn these fantasy roles into characters that have more than two dimensions. It's still a... More Info about this DVD

    First Daughter DVD

Playing the president's kin in the modern fairy tale First Daughter is the most grown-up role yet for Dawson's Creek cutie Katie Holmes. Samantha McKenzie (Holmes) has lived all her life on the edge of the political spotlight, but she hopes that she'll get away from it all when she leaves the White House for college. No such luck. Even though she's able to make friends with her roommate (singer Amerie) and meet a nice guy (Marc Blucas), security is tight in an election year, and the Secret Service follows her wherever she goes. First Daughter isn't particularly original (it was the working title for Mandy Moore's Chasing Liberty, which opened in theaters earlier the same year, 2004), but it's a chuckle-inducing girlie movie that's worth watching for Holmes.... How to Deal (New Line Platinum Series) DVD

Teen idol Mandy Moore (A Walk to Remember) learns how to deal with an awful lot--How to Deal crams divorce, teen pregnancy, a wedding, a car accident, and a pot-smoking grandmother into a single year in the life of Halley Martin (Moore). Halley's so resentful of her parents' divorce (and her father's impending remarriage) that she resolves not to fall in love--so of course a hunky guy named Macon (Trent Ford) decides that she's the girl for him and woos her with gentle persistence. Two things save all of this from being a teenage soap opera: First, a refreshingly realistic (though not explicit) and unjudgmental look at teenage sex; second, a sterling supporting cast, including Allison Janney (The West Wing), Peter Gallagher (sex, lies, and videotape), and Dylan... A Walk to Remember DVD

With refreshing intelligence, A Walk to Remember offers welcome relief from the recent onslaught of teen-movie crudeness. Adapted from the novel by Nicholas Sparks and transplanted from 1958 to the present day, this admirable teen romance recognizes that two 18-year-olds--Landon (Shane West) and Jamie (pop singer Mandy Moore)--can be smart, mature, and sensible about the very real love they share. He's a popular kid in the cool crowd. She's got a goody-goody reputation as the dowdy daughter of a local minister (Peter Coyote); her values and priorities aren't rooted in peer pressure, and Landon feels blessed by her self-assured nobility. Their mutual affection inevitably heads into Love Story territory, but the movie is honest enough to survive its own schmaltz, and its... More Info about this DVD

A Cinderella Story (Full Screen Edition) DVD

If you are one of Hilary Duff's most ardent pre-teen fans, chances are you'll find something to enjoy in A Cinderella Story, but everyone else should proceed with caution. It's an updated fairy tale for the age of instant messaging, which is how Sam (Duff) develops a crush on Austin (Chad Michael Murray) before realizing that this Tennyson-quoting poet-at-heart is actually her San Fernando Valley high school's star quarterback and most desirable hunk. In a role that squanders her proven comedic gifts, Jennifer Coolidge is Sam's Botox-injected evil stepmother, and lame attempts at comedy turn her dimwitted stepsisters into buffoons, like many of the other cast members who struggle to find anything funny in the screenplay. So we're left with the bland, blonde charms of Hilary... More Info about this DVD
