I bought this because I wanted a better print of "The Ghost" on DVD. It's a rare Italian horror film with Barbara Steele that's a follow up to the classic "Terror of Dr.Hitchcock". Extremely moody and eerie and saturated with Gothic atmosphere, it features Steele at her best as both vixen and victim. While Retromedia's print does look better, it is by far not the best. There are bad scratches on the print throughout. The second feature on this disc is a soft and dupey print of "Dead Eyes of London". This is a low-budget German remake of Lugosi's 1939 thriller "The Human Monster". Both films are based on a story by Edgar Wallace. "Dead Eyes" is a murder mystery or "krimi" that features a Tor Johnson type blind brute following orders and kidnapping wealthy older men. It is neither scary nor a horror film despite the hype on the box. It does feature a pretty funny electronic score that flourishes the "scary scenes". I was disappointed on all counts with this purchase. I do admit that the print of "The Ghost" is better than what I had but it's not the best and the scratches distract. So until something better comes along, for Steele fans, get this for "The Ghost". "Dead Eyes of London" is a curiosity at best.
I get to Chapter 14 or thereabouts, and - Aaargh - I'm back on the menu screen. Right at the end of the film... A re-press please, Mr Macabro!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyone else had problems like this? AKA "Horror Castle", this rarely seen German-Italian horror film has been handled well and is a find for collectors. Dubbed in English and directed by Antonio Margheriti ("Castle of Blood"), it concerns a new bride (Rosana Podesta) discovering the eyeless corpse of a woman inside an ancient iron maiden (the "Virgin") in her husband's ancestral castle on the Rhine. Told by everyone it was just a nightmare, she suspects something more and sure enough discovers Christopher Lee (as Erik), a war disfigured handyman, acting suspiciously around some antique surgical instruments. Later, the sinister housekeeper balefully informs her that an infamous ancestor, "the Punisher", is back and bent on torturing and killing "shameless women". There is a mysterious costumed and hooded figure running... More Info about this DVD Director(s): Antonio Margheriti DVD Release Date: Released the 30 March 2004 Usually ships within 3 to 4 days

An early departure from director David Cronenberg's canon of visceral horror, 1979's Fast Company profiles one of his personal passions, racecars, in a gritty melodrama that also features exciting racetrack footage. Veteran toughguy William Smith is top-billed as a champion drag racer who clashes with the unscrupulous oil-company executive (John Saxon) who sponsors his team. Though lacking the gruesome clinical obsessions of his horror features (Cronenberg admits on the disc's commentary that the film was a tax shelter for its Canadian producers), Fast Company is also fascinated with internal machinery (here, car engines instead of human bodies), and it's easily Cronenberg's most approachable film, with plenty of automotive action alongside the solid performances (the cast... Curious horror anthology is loosely based on the works of horror novelist R. Chetwynd-Hayes, portrayed by John Carradine as an active partaker in his own tales. The author is invited by a smooth vampire (the fabulous Vincent Price) to go with him to The Monster Club, where he bears witness to the secret social customs of various monsters, which evidently include drinking, dancing, and watching undead stripping Go Go Ghouls. He is also educated to the mating patterns of these creatures, whose tendency to inter-breed creates such new strains of monsters. All of this is interjected by short stories featuring campy yet fun monsters running amok. A fun side note is that the movie features music by pop-reggae band UB40. Have no sense of humor? Avoid this film. Love campy fun? Don't miss out.
