Review(s): DVD Dancing in the Dark
Made for TV and should have stayed there.

Trite made-for-TV movie with Victoria Principal as a woman trying to be a perfect housewife. After her father-in-law tires to rape her, her husband begins to question the mental state of his wife. With the help of his father he finds a doctor willing to medicate her into submission and into a mental hospital. Only after some horrific experiences does he being to realize the truth of what he has done to the woman he loves.

As TV movies go this was below average. The plot was choppy and slow moving. And their contempt for the mental health system is so obvious you have to think the screenwriter was trying to get back as his shrink does. If this really based on a true story then there should have been some epilogue to cover what happened to the snake pit the lead was condemned to.

    Kill Cruise DVD

Yes, I know this is a bad movie but for some reason it's got me hooked and I've watched it twice already. This may be because I'm trying to make sense of it, the plot really doesn't hang together even on long-distance inspection, but this is the closest Jurgen Prochnow has got to a boat since Das Boot and that alone gives it three stars in my book. Liz Hurley's accent wavers around from Essex girl to Sloan Ranger but she makes the most of the part, and Patsy Kensit does childish tantrums very well. It's a pity that's all she had to do because even done well they can get boring. Watching Prochnow handle the boat, and briefly Liz Hurley, is great fun but the twist at the end left me open-mouthed even the second time. I actually thought it must have been based on something that happened when... More Info about this DVD

In the Cut (Unrated and Uncut Director's Edition) DVD

Based on Susanna Moore's popular novel, In the Cut centers on Frannie (Meg Ryan), an emotionally stifled English teacher who gets steamy with sultry Malloy (Mark Ruffalo, You Can Count On Me), a cop who's investigating a series of brutal murders--but Frannie soon suspects that Malloy may be the killer. As a psychological thriller, In the Cut is heavier on psychology than thrills; the story is a skeleton that director Jane Campion (The Piano, An Angel at My Table) cloaks in one of the most nightmarish visions of urban life since Taxi Driver or Seven, accompanied by lots of explicit sex. The movie's dark tone will put some viewers off, but Ruffalo's effortless magnetism serves him well; no woman in the audience will question how quickly Ryan... More Info about this DVD
