  • DVD Reno 911 - The Complete First Season

From the creators of the flamboyantly fabulous Viva Variety (and when will that be released on DVD?) comes Reno 911, Comedy Central's most arresting comedy series. Ride along with the cluelessly cracked squad of the Wahoe County Sheriff's Department, who cross the proverbial thin blue line with impunity. "That's how we do it in Reno," exults Lt. Dangle (Thomas Lemmon), after absent-mindedly rear-ending a car whose trunk pops open to reveal a cache of marijuana. Reno 911 has Cops's gritty documentary feel, and Police Squad's straight face in subverting cop show conventions. The hapless officers get no respect, not from the citizens they encounter, from their colleagues in the FBI, or even from themselves. Kerri Kenney-Silver's unfortunate Det. Wiegel is the squad's odd girl out. "She's like a bad casserole" is one of the more polite things said about her. In one episode, a misunderstanding leads to her being put under a suicide watch, and she so loves the attention, she doesn't bother to inform her brethren that she, in fact, did not try to kill herself. The forays into black comedy are about as subtle as a S.W.A.T. assault. In the first episode's opening moments, an officer answers a domestic disturbance call with guns blazing, only to discover it is a surprise birthday party for him.

But Reno 911 would have gotten old fast if it was just Police Academy-style mishaps and slapstick. What elevates this from being a one-joke series are the intimately observed characters' quirks and personal dramas. Dangle has a penchant for short shorts, and, in the first episode at least, comely male traffic offenders. Dangle is not exactly Capt. Furillo (from Hill Street Blues) in the compassion department. When the squad learns that unwed Deputy C. Johnson (Wendy McLendon-Covey) is pregnant, he jokingly searches for a phone book when considering who the father might be. "There's usually a phone book around here," he shrugs. "It would have been funnier." Comedy Central may be guilty of running these episodes into the ground, but for Reno 911's devoted following, and for rookies to the force, this boxed set of commercial-free episodes, some commentary-enhanced, is just the ticket. --Donald Liebenson

Review(s): DVD Reno 911 - The Complete First Season
    Surprisingly good....

I really didn't think I was going to like this show, but it's actually pretty good. It isn't the funniest thing I've ever seen, but it's well done, decently funny, the characters come across as real people for the most part, and there isn't any smug condescension towards them. The performances are good for this type of thing. Some of my favorite moments are Thomas Lennon's closeted gay cop getting his bike stolen constantly, the jokes the cops play on unsuspecting motorists (like arresting the pizza delivery guy so they could take his pizza), the episode where the "homeland security" guy fools all of the Reno police department, and when the FBI comes in for a murder investigation, and reduces the department to a bunch of gophers. You're not going to see groundbreaking, brilliant satire here, but you won't be bored, either. Overall, a decent series.

    'WKRP in Cincinnati' meets 'COPS'

When you love being with the characters of a show, does the plot-line matter? The answer is 'yes' if you are a fan of the only reality show on TV, 'COPS.'

Much like the comedy classics 'WKRP,' 'Mary Tyler Moore,' 'Cheers' and others, 'Reno 911' gives us characters who are fun to be with. They are confused, silly, illogical, occasionally dim-witted and even racist at times. A camera zooms in on any one of them seemingly out of nowhere at a moment's notice and shows us glimpses of them engaged in petty workplace back-stabbing, gossip or romance. In the meantime, they are all in sheriffs' department uniform, crashing the police car, conducting stings that go wrong, firing their guns with reckless abandon, deciphering vanity plates on cars while in high-speed pursuit, and chasing bizarre criminals around Reno or its trailer parks. (In addition to being on the Reno police force, Niecy Nash, also the star of the home improvement show 'Clean House,' provides face-blurred cameos of a wacko woman with a penchant for disturbing the peace and stealing police cars and weapons. In the final episode, watch for Garcia, played by Carlos Alazraqui, to lose it and disappear off-camera laughing hysterically at Ms. Nash's escapades.)

I discovered 'Reno 911' while channel-flipping and tuned in for a few repeat episodes because a) it was truly funny, and, b) was a spoof of one of my all-time favorite shows, 'COPS.' I had never bought a television-show-on-DVD before and decided that I wanted to give this one a try and watch this particular series sequentially and commercial free beginning with episode 1. I am so glad I did. Thankfully, there is no laugh track, nor is there one on TV either. Each episode is skillfully and evenly written and produced, very funny and stands alone. (Some episodes also include audio commentary.)

This stuff works. Highly recommended for all students of comedy and fans of 'COPS.'

    Reno 911 - First Season

It is hilariously quirky. Very random just as I like it

An unfolding scandal threatens to rock Reno, Nevada to its core. It's not the clueless Officer Wiegel's new boyfriend, who just may be the Truckee River Killer. It's not the shooting of singer Kenny Rogers while under the neglectful watch of Garcia and Wiegel. No, it's the caught-on-tape pummeling of "Milkshake Man" at the hands of Jones and Garcia that will place Wahoe County's finest (certainly funniest) under investigation by an ambitious District Attorney (he his eye on becoming Comptroller). Reno 911's sophomore season is even more savagely funny than the first, as witness the various humiliations suffered weekly by the hapless squad. When they're not being one-upped by the Reno fire department, which has scheduled its annual pancake dinner the same night at the policeman's... More Info about this DVD

South Park - The Complete Sixth Season DVD

First thing, WHO said "Jarred Has Aides" wasn't a great episode? In fact I believe it to be one of the FUNNIEST of its particular season. Although, this season which has some fantastic episodes the subsequent 2 seasons are EVEN stronger, but this is a great followup to season 5.. with only a few.. well no real flat out duds, there's always SOMETHING in there.. but it doesn't quite stack up to the seasons around it.

Still.. Free Hat, Red Hot Catholic Love, Jarred has Aidea, The Return of the Fellowship of the Ring to the Two Towers were some of the FUNNIEST episodes of the series.. and are easily in the top 25, the show reached its 100th episode in the 8th season with "I'm a Little Bit Country".

South Park amazingly hits it right out of the park.. or just nose... More Info about this DVD

    Chappelle's Show - Season 1 DVD

The 2003 debut of Chappelle's Show on Comedy Central marked a high point for the cable channel, and now the entire, wildly creative first season can be seen, with hundreds of bleeps removed. That's not to say Chappelle's Show is perfect entertainment: there are too many moments among the 12 episodes here that descend into pointless scatology and booty fever. But for the most part, Chappelle, a talented comic slowly growing into greatness, is trying to push the sketch-humor envelope and succeeds at surprising us with original concepts and merciless execution.

The merely clever material includes "National Geography's Third World Girls Gone Wild," basically an update on those topless-native-women gags of yore, and Chappelle's "Educated Guess Line," in which the sage comic... More Info about this DVD

Crank Yankers Uncensored - Season One DVD

Perhaps the guiltiest of guilty pleasures, Crank Yankers has a way of overcoming one's ethical conflicts about prank phone calls with some very funny examples of the practice. Comic talents Wanda Sykes, Sarah Silverman, Tracy Morgan, Dave Chappelle, and others join the Touchstone Terrorists and musical duo Tenacious D in tormenting innocent people with ridiculous communications. Among the 10 episodes of season 1 is Sykes's outrageous call to an auto mechanic, claiming that someone at the guy's shop defecated in her car. Unlike many of the innocent recipients of Crank Yankers's harassment, the bemused mechanic turns the tables on the crazed woman and goads her into making more ridiculous claims. Elsewhere, a pet shop owner takes a call from an "old woman" (Susie Essman)... More Info about this DVD
