  • DVD The Butterfly Effect (Infinifilm Edition)

Despite box-office dominance during its opening weekend, The Butterfly Effect is better suited to guilty-pleasure viewing at home. When writer-directors Eric Bress and J. Mackye Gruber (who penned Final Destination 2) aren't breaking their own haphazard rules of logic, they're filling this sordid thriller with enough unpleasantness to make eternal damnation seem like an attractive alternative. In a role-reversal from his That '70s Show persona, Ashton Kutcher plays a college-age psychology student who discovers, by re-reading his childhood journals, that he can revisit his past and alter traumatic events, hoping to improve their previously unfortunate outcomes. Instead, this foolhardy experiment in chaos theory (the titular "butterfly effect," popularized by Jeff Goldblum in Jurassic Park) results in a variety of nightmarish permutations, each having dire consequences for him and/or his friends. This intriguing premise is explored with a few interesting twists and turns, but with subplots involving child pornography, animal cruelty, and profanely violent children, it's a stretch to call it entertainment. --Jeff Shannon

Review(s): DVD The Butterfly Effect (Infinifilm Edition)
A VERY GOOD MOVIE THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITES.

BASICALLY I LIKE TO WRITE REVEIEWS FOR PRODUCTS THAT I BELEIVE ARE VERY GOOD OR POOR BASED ON MY OPINION AND PERSONEL EXPERIECES.NOW THIS MOVIE I LOVE BECAUSE I DO RECOMMENDED TO BUY.

    A Suprise

I actually just viewed this movie a couple of nights ago and was suprised that I actually enjoyed it. Dark and demented, this movie actaully plays on a scientific and psychological mind that is very unique. I have to say, I was not familiar with the "Butterfly Effect" Theory and background, but I decided to research the material and had fun doing it! So I learned something new and I watched a curious and great movie as well.

More Reviews Than the "Wizard of Oz"!!!

For a relatively obscure film, "Butterfly" has stimulated a lot of discourse and counter opinions. Reviewers' descriptors include: romantic, entertaining, mystery, sleaze, violent, thriller, dark, psychological, horror, sinister, time travel, evil, scientific, disturbing, etc. These come from both favorable and unfavorable reviews.

To understand Butterfly, one has to understand what the "butterfly effect" is; otherwise the viewer will be sorely disappointed. The official editorial reviewer, Shannon, points to "Jurassic Park" for edification, but that's nonsense; don't waste your time there.

Without going into detail, the butterfly effect is a very real scientific postulation that includes elements of chaos theory, non-linear differential equations, and how infinitesimal differences in initial conditions can drastically change outcomes. Specifically, the butterfly effect refers to how the action of a butterfly in one part of the world might have unexpected but profound effects on weather systems half way around the globe. Sounds absurd (like many found the movie), but it is an accepted theory in the scientific community. I recommend "Chaos" by Gleick for a clear and understandable explanation of the effect, and for a general understanding of chaos theory.

If I had no understanding of the butterfly effect, I would have panned the movie too. On the other hand, I found Butterfly to be a provocative interpretation.

    Secret Window DVD

Johnny Depp gets high off another acting challenge in this tricky adaptation of a Stephen King yarn. Although the mood is too sinister to allow for the mischief of his Pirates of the Caribbean turn, Depp still manages to embroider his role here with plenty of quirky business. He plays a writer, depressed and nearly divorced, who's stuck in an isolated cabin (shades of The Shining) when a stranger (John Turturro) arrives, accusing him of plagiarism. Writer-director David Koepp (Stir of Echoes) does his best to make the rickety material compelling--he gets the maximum out of the cabin set, for instance--but the problems inherent in the King story eventually win out. The climactic scenes are particularly unpleasant, especially in contrast to the cleverness of Depp's... More Info about this DVD

    The Forgotten DVD

With a plot that might've been lifted from The X-Files, nothing is quite what it seems in The Forgotten, a psychological conspiracy thriller with Julianne Moore doing fine work as a grieving mother whose nine-year-old son was killed in a plane crash. At least, that's what she's been led to believe, but when even her husband (Anthony Edwards) tries to convince her that she's delusional and never had a child, things start to get very spooky indeed. Dominic West (from HBO's superb series The Wire) plays a similarly traumatized father, and when they witness some very strange events--and a mysterious man (Linus Roache) who might be indestructible--this glorified B-movie potboiler directed by Joseph Ruben (best known for Dreamscape and The Stepfather)... I, Robot (Widescreen Edition) DVD

As paranoid cop Del Spooner, Will Smith (Independence Day, Men in Black) displays both his trademark quips and some impressive pectoral muscles in I, Robot. Only Spooner suspects that the robots that provide the near future with menial labor are going to turn on mankind--he's just not sure how. When a leading roboticist dies suspiciously, Spooner pursues a trail that may prove his suspicions. Don't expect much of a connection to Isaac Asimov's classic science fiction stories; I, Robot, the action movie, isn't prepared for any ruminations on the significance of artificial intelligence. This likable, efficient movie won't break any new ground, but it does have an idea or two to accompany its jolts and thrills, which puts it ahead of most recent action flicks.... Man on Fire DVD

Style trumps substance in Man on Fire, a slick, brooding reunion of Crimson Tide star Denzel Washington and director Tony Scott. The ominous, crime-ridden setting is Mexico City, where a dour, alcoholic warrior with a mysterious Black Ops past (Washington) seeks redemption as the devoted bodyguard of a lovable 9-year-old girl (the precociously gifted Dakota Fanning), then responds with predictable fury when she is kidnapped. Prolific screenwriter Brian Helgeland (Mystic River, L.A. Confidential) sets a solid emotional foundation for Washington's tormented character, and Scott's stylistic excess compensates for a distended plot that's both repellently violent and viscerally absorbing. Among Scott's more distracting techniques is the use of free-roaming,... More Info about this DVD

    Collateral DVD

Collateral offers a change of pace for Tom Cruise as a ruthless contract killer, but that's just one of many reasons to recommend this well-crafted thriller. It's from Michael Mann, after all, and the director's stellar track record with crime thrillers (Thief, Manhunter, and especially Heat) guarantees a rich combination of intelligent plotting, well-drawn characters, and escalating tension, beginning here when icy hit-man Vincent (Cruise) recruits cab driver Max (Jamie Foxx) to drive him through a nocturnal tour of Los Angeles, during which he will execute five people in a 10-hour spree. While Stuart Beattie's screenplay deftly combines intimate character study with raw bursts of action (in keeping with Mann's directorial trademark), Foxx does the best work...
