If you have followed comics at all, you'll enjoy this spoof. It not only blasts multiple super hero stereotypes, but also takes on some of the commercialism associated with comic heros.
As the other review has stated, this is a movie that you watch for the great writing and hilarious characters. Jamie Kennedy has one of the strongest characters, Amok, who you will find instantly quotable (or repulsive, depending on your point of view). The overall story does fall a little on the soap opera silly side of things, but that's what you get in most super hero stories anyway (especially if you took away the actual villains or action).
As for the disc, it looks and sounds quite decent, doubt that there's any change from the pioneer disc. The extras are pretty funny, but I think those were also carried over from the previous disc. The only difference I can think of is that they have a slightly different menu (not much of a real change).
Definitely worth buying if you don't own the previous edition!
CULT CLASSIC
First off. This New Anchor Bay Dvd does not seem to have enough new special features to warrant a purchase if you already have the old Pioneer version. But that one seems to be hard to find.
This movie is a hidden gem. It is very low budget. But the dialouge Is genius. If you like Kevin Smith or Tarantino's dialouge, where people seem to ramble on about non sense, You will love this movie.
This is what the horrible Mystery Men should have been. Even if you don't like superhero's you can enjoy this flick. The cast is fantastic.
Just don't expect many special effects or X-Men type action. They mostly sit aroound and complain about their job like in Officespace.
Ever wonder if there was a class system in the world of superheroes? After all the big names like Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, etc., who were the supporting players? The folks assigned to the less-than-stellar gigs of saving only a small part of the world? According to this intermittently successful send-up of comic book heroism, there are indeed masked heroes who struggle and toil for their moment in the super sun. Based on the Dark Horse comic book series, Mystery Men follows the travails of three B-list avengers--Mr. Furious (Ben Stiller), the Shoveler (William H. Macy), and the Blue Raja (Hank Azaria)--as they fight to make themselves known to the citizens of Champion City, quite difficult to do when the flashy Captain Amazing (Greg Kinnear, never better) takes all... The amiable sci-fi spoof The Ice Pirates has earned a small but vocal cadre of admirers thanks to its go-for-broke gags and a healthy disrespect for outer space epics like the Star Wars and Star Trek franchises. An atypically goofy Robert Urich stars as the leader of a band of space pirates who kidnap a princess (Mary Crosby of Dallas fame), and then join her quest to find a mythical planet that can solve the universes water shortage. A completely game (shameless?) cast (which includes Anjelica Huston in fetching leather gear, Ron Perlman, John Matuszak, and fantastic film icon John Carradine) and Stewart (The Philadelphia Experiment) and Raffills breezy direction help sell the funniest bits (most notably, the notorious "space herpy" scene,... Of all the "re-imagining" wreaked upon the Hanna-Barbera animated catalog by Cartoon Network's Adult Swim programs, Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law is probably their most deliriously creative effort. The series revives second-string '60s avian hero Birdman, and via a combination of old clips and new animation, recasts him as a crusading lawyer (voiced by Gary Cole) who defends the rights of other cartoon characters. That Harvey is pitted in the courtroom against old supervillain foes, who have followed his lead and become prosecutors and judges, is one problem--but even more challenging are the pickles his fellow Hanna-Barbera creations find themselves in: Harvey must clear Fred Flintstone of organized crime charges ("The Dabba Don," perhaps the first season's... An elite U.S. counter-terrorism squad loses a member while decimating half of Paris in the reckless pursuit of Middle Eastern maniacs; a Broadway actor with a traumatic childhood secret is naturally hired to replace him. Oh--and they're all marionettes. South Park maestros Trey Parker and Matt Stone (along with co-writer Pam Brady) came up with this shameless satire of pea-brained Hollywood action flicks and even smaller-minded global politics, so don't expect subtlety or even a hint of good taste. Team America is soon on the trail of North Korea's evil Kim Jong Il, who treats us to a tender song about his loneliness before ensnaring Alec Baldwin and the rest of the oblivious Film Actors Guild (F.A.G. for short) in a plot to blow up every major city on the planet. Just as... More Info about this DVD Actor(s): Elle Russ - Matt Stone DVD Release Date: Released the 17 May 2005 Usually ships in 24 hours
