This is a great sleeper movie. Max is sort of like Data's older brother. He wants so badly to be human. This movie has some surprise twists and a wicked sense of humor, especially in the ending. For once the underdog wins. One of my favorites of the not-often-seen movies.
murder is a serious crime max
A fave from my teenage years - this is a charming and intelligent sci-fi B-movie with good peformances from all involved. Klaus Kinski plays a wayward nutty frankenstienesque scientist living alone on a space station with his android servant: Max 404, a bumbling android who yearns to know what it means to be human. Kinski believes himself to be on the brink of a major breakthrough but the corporation are about to pull the plug on his dodgy experiments. Enter three escaped convicts that fly into their airspace whilst on the run from the law - when Kinski learns there is a woman on board he allows them to stay as she would be ideal for his grand experiment. Max too is fascinated with her - queue many humourous, touching and tragic moments and a great minimal synth soundtrack - this film is a little known sci-fi gem with a heart - just don't expect star wars!
This was so far ahead of its time that it is hard to describe. Ic an see a bunch of stuff from STarwars in this. The way the Robo-cops act is like the robots in Starwars... etc.
With each passing year, this 1980 miniseries becomes more for those who have read Ray Bradbury's landmark novel. The three-part, nearly five-hour series keeps its brainy science fiction roots; this story (and the 1940s novel) is not about laser battles and exciting action pieces. Bradbury's novel is galvanized by the cold war nightmare: at the end of the 20th century, an earth teetering on world war begins to colonize Mars without much knowledge of the new world. Hard science is left for other stories, and director Michael Anderson (Logan's Run) keeps this retrofitting: for example, astronauts arrive on a breathable Mars in leisure suits. The space travel effects are clunky, but the action on Mars--with Assheton Gorton's geometric sets and simple props--are far more effective.... This is the TV movie that put Steven Spielberg on the map, shortly before he made The Sugarland Express. Working from a script by Richard Matheson, the film stars Dennis Weaver as a mild-mannered traveling salesman who unintentionally angers the driver of a semi truck. Suddenly, the truck is not only riding his tail but trying to run him off the road. No matter what he does (pulling over, stopping at a diner, calling the cops), he can't get rid of it. Spielberg makes the wise decision of never showing the driver, even as he cranks the voltage on the film's suspense elements. As a result, the truck itself takes on an air of satanic menace--even a personality of sorts--as it seems to hunt its human prey.
