DVD Badder Santa (Unrated Widescreen Edition)
Instantly qualifying as a perennial cult favorite, Bad Santa is as nasty as it wants to be, and there's something to be said for comedy without compromise. The Coen brothers conceived the basic idea and served as executive producers, but it's director Terry Zwigoff (Crumb, Ghost World) who brings his unique affinity for losers and outcasts to the twisted tale of Willie T. Stokes (Billy Bob Thornton), a hard-drinking, chain-smoking, foul-mouthed sexaholic safe-cracker who targets a different department store every holiday season, playing Santa while he cases the joint with his dwarf elf-partner Marcus (Tony Cox). With comedic support from Bernie Mac, Lauren Graham, Cloris Leachman, and John Ritter in his final film, Thornton milks the lowbrow laughs with a slovenly lack of sentiment, warming Bad Santa's pickled heart just enough to please a chubby misfit (Brett Kelly, hilariously deadpan) who may or may not be mentally challenged. As dry as an arid martini and blacker than morning-after coffee, Bad Santa is an instant cure for yuletide schmaltz, and if you think this appropriately R-rated comedy is suitable for kids, your parenting skills are no better than Willie's. --Jeff Shannon
Review(s): DVD Badder Santa (Unrated Widescreen Edition)
This movie actually inspired me - read my review to understand how....
It was absolutely painful to watch how vulgar and pathetic Mr. Bad Santa was. Disgusting and offensive. Selfish, chauvenistic, hedonistic in the most primitive fashion. I have a great sense of humor and can have fun with dark comedies so I did snicker a lot but there were times my modest side had to look away from the screen. But the underlying plot was a welcoming surprise, as soon we are introduced to a character in the film who I never expected to be the shining star (SPOILERS COMING UP). He meets this boy who is completely persecuted by his peers and we cannot tell if he is mentally retarded, or just sheltered due to negligence, or hiding his brilliance for good purposes or bad.
Now I am never one to impose religion on anyone, but if you have any value for Jesus Christ, be it you believe he was a wonderful man, a special prophet, or God himself in the flesh, then here is an interesting analogy I found in this movie which truly inspired me. Think of the stories about Jesus. OK he wasn't a pathetic figure, but did he not walk amongst and accept the lepers, prostitutes, and other sinners? Moreover, what was Jesus' main lesson - "turn the other cheek". This man was so mean and cruel to this boy who was always NOTHING but nice to him, the boy personified this lesson of simply turning the other cheek, and giving unconditional love. There is an important story that Jesus is claimed having said in the Bible (again, you may or not believe in the Bible here, but it's worth noting). I don't remember the exact words verbatim but the jist of what was written was this: "It's easy for us to love those who are good and kind to us. We don't get credit in Heaven for that." This little boy pursued being calm and good-hearted and giving despite what happened, and eventually the love did start to mirror off of the boy onto Bad Santa and grow in his heart. (Remember when he taped back up the Advent calendar? I had a tear in my eye when the boy found the aspirin!) I am hoping this can work for me because I have been having a lot of moments where someone close to me in my life has been treating me rather cruel for no good reason and it always upsets me greatly. I am going to remember how this boy acted and hope that facing the roaring lion in my face with calmness and love will squelch the anger/meanness and bring out the better side of this person that I used to know and still have respect for.
Santa as anti-hero
Yep, it's vulgar. But, Badder Santa is one of the most unusual Christmas movies ever. Utterly hilarious and destined to become a cult classic. Billy Bob Thornton is perfect as the burned-out alcoholic who ends up saving Christmas for one troubled little boy. Expect profanity in a film that's right on the edge. John Ritter is a riot. Highly recommended.
A christmas movie for the adults
This movie is definitely worth buying. I have never been a big fan of Billy Bob but this is by far the best movie he has ever made. Throw in a convincing story line, Bernie Mac in another great role, an appearance by John Ritter and a very likeable kid named Thurman Murman and you have a very entertaining movie, one which will make every one of your christmas's complete. But this is not your average christmas movie. The underlying story throughout is of a sad and lonely alcoholic named Willie, who is also a professional thief, who along with his sidekick elf crack safes and rob department stores once they have closed for trade on christmas eve. We witness Willie's slow but steady path of self detruction and alcohol abuse, which he makes no attempt to hide from the world. Along the way Willie meets Thurman, a lonely kid who is the target of bullies and in search of a friend of his own. He takes an instant shine to Willie thinking he really is Santa of course.
Special features include Deleted scenes, bloopers and a behind the scenes special. There is a lot of swearing, vomitting and general crudeness on behalf of Billy Bob's character Willie.
Billy Bob is very convincing as an alcoholic, he has obviously had lots of practice!
Put this one in someones stocking this christmas.

With Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson as a pair of brazen wedding crashers, this buddy/romantic comedy milks a few big laughs from its foolproof premise. Under the direction of David Dobkin (who previously worked with Wilson on Shanghai Knights), the movie ranges from bawdy romp to mushy romance, and that tonal identity crisis curtails the overall hilarity. But when the well-teamed costars are firing on all pistons with fast-paced dialogue and manic situations, belly laughs are delivered at a steady clip. Things get complicated when the guys infiltrate the family of the Treasury Secretary (Christopher Walken), resulting in a romantic pair-off between Vaughn and the congressman's oversexed daughter Gloria (Isla Fisher) while Wilson sincerely woos another daughter, Claire (Rachel... Cult comic actor Steve Carell--long adored for his supporting work on The Daily Show and in movies like Bruce Almighty and Anchorman--leaps into leading man status with The 40 Year-Old Virgin. There's no point describing the plot; it's about how a 40 year-old virgin named Andy (Carell) finally finds true love and gets laid. Along the way, there are very funny scenes involving being coached by his friends, speed dating, being propositioned by his female manager, and getting his chest waxed. Carell finds both humor and humanity in Andy, and the supporting cast includes some standout comic work from Paul Rudd (Clueless, The Shape of Things) and Jane Lynch (Best in Show, A Mighty Wind), as well as an unusually straight performance from... The two-disc edition of Sin City easily makes the earlier single-disc theatrical-cut release obsolete by including the regular theatrical cut on the first disc, recutting the movie into four extended segments on the second disc (separated by story line), then piling on an impressive load of bonus features. But there's a catch. Billed as "Recut, Extended, Unrated," with "over 20 minutes" of new footage, the new set's four separate stories are extended by only about 6.5 total minutes of movie action (see details below in "What's New"); the rest of the added running time is the splashy new title shots (named by the title of the story or book) and the four minutes of credits that run at the end of each segment. Each addition makes the movie even closer to the comic books, and these... How's this for impressive trivia: Dodgeball faced off against The Terminal in opening-weekend competition, and 29-year-old writer-director Rawson Marshall Thurber aced Steven Spielberg by a score of $30 to $18.7 in box-office millions. That's no mean feat for a newcomer, but Thurber's lowbrow script and rapid-fire direction--along with a sublime cast of screen comedians--proved to be just what moviegoers were ravenous for: a consistently hilarious, patently formulaic romp in which the underdog owner of Average Joe's Gym (Vince Vaughn) faces foreclosure unless he can raise $50,000 in 30 days. The solution: A dodgeball tournament offering $50K to the winners, in which Vaughn and his nerdy clientele team up against the preening, abhorrently narcissistic owner (Ben Stiller) of... A Christmas Story is on its way to becoming an annual holiday classic, one to keep on the shelf with It's a Wonderful Life, the puppet-animated Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and A Charlie Brown Christmas. It may have been directed by Bob Clark (responsible for the Porky's pictures), but it's based on the childhood memoirs of humorist Jean Shepherd (from his hilarious book In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash). And it is Shepherd's wry, deadly accurate and gently nostalgic comic sensibility that shines through in this kid's-eye-view of an all-American Christmas in the 1940s. All little Ralphie (Peter Billingsley) wants under the tree on Christmas morning is a Daisy Brand Red-Ryder BB rifle. He not only wants it, he's consumed with an aching...
