  • DVD Jumpin' Jack Flash

Whoopi Goldberg (The Color Purple) gives one of her earliest and finest film performances as Terry Doolittle, a computer programmer who unwittingly becomes embroiled in an international espionage scheme, forced to outmaneuver the CIA and KGB in this riotous 1986 Cold War comedy. Doolittle, the outspoken and irreverent employee of an international bank, is working overtime one evening when her terminal receives an encrypted message pleading for help from Jumpin’ Jack Flash, code name for a British spy (Jonathan Pryce) trapped in Eastern Europe. At first reluctantly and then audaciously, Doolittle becomes privy to his predicament and essential to his escape while delivering a steady stream of ribald one-liners and witty slapstick—whether it’s her Mick Jagger impersonation, police station meltdown, or infamous dress-caught-in-the-paper-shredder escapade at the British Consulate ball. A host of supporting talent includes Annie Potts, Jon Lovitz, Jim Belushi, the late Phil Hartman, and Stephen Collins (who shines as Marty, the mole), yet the film belongs to Whoopi. Though the plot is far-fetched and often flimsy, Penny Marshall (in her directorial debut) gives Goldberg enough latitude to showcase her immense talent in a role she obviously relishes—and audiences will too. Rated R for extreme profanity and mature themes. --Lynn Gibson

    Review(s): DVD Jumpin' Jack Flash
    Good Whoopi

Years ago when this was first released it was the first movie I saw Whoopi Goldberg in, and I haven't missed any of her movies since then. Fans of comedies about average people getting into complicated spy situations with comedic results will love it. If you are a fan of movies like "Bird on a Wire", "Outrageous Fortune", and "Undercover Blues" you should enjoy this one.

This was the first time I recall seeing a comedy spy movie other than "Casino Royale" at the time. Goldberg and the rest the cast do a great job. Good music and sets make it stand out among a good number of those produced today. I highly recommend you buy this one since it is definitely one of Whoopi's best.

    A comedy that surpasses time

I absolutely love this movie and plan to get it on DVD now that it is out. This is definitely one of my favorite movies of all time. I saw this movie when I was fairly young, and watched it again as an adult. As an adult, I still found the movie to be very amusing. I love to watch it during the little down time that I have. It is one of my guilty pleasures on a rainy day. Whoopi Goldberg's character is strong, intelligent, and independent. This movie has a little bit of everything, drama, mystery and suspense, and comedy (definitely!). I don't want to give anything away for those who haven't watched this movie, but I will say that this is one movie that doesn't often get the spotlight, but it is well deserved of one.

    Thank God

I am sooooooooooooooo happy that one of my all time favorite movies has finally come out on DVD. I love this movie so much. It's one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. Every time it comes on TV, I watch it like it's new. My favorite scene is when she dresses like one of the supremes and she gets her dress caught in the shredder, I laugh so hard at that point. Please, if you haven't seen this movie, it is a must have, cause it is unbelievably funny.

    Burglar DVD

Burglar may not be one of Whoopi Goldberg's best outings, but it does offer her several opportunities to cut loose as a comedian. She plays a bookshop owner with a shady past who is being blackmailed by a crooked cop and must perform one last heist. Naturally, everything goes wrong and a handsome lothario winds up dead. Whoopi must find his murderer before the police find her. There are a couple of unexpected twists to this formulaic tale though Hugh (First Wives Club) Wilson's direction can't always navigate the tonal shifts between comedy and murder mystery. But Whoopi holds it all together with strong assistance from a stellar cast including Bob Goldthwait, John Goodman, Anne DeSalvo, and Lesley Ann Warren. Goldthwait, who plays a dog groomer and Whoopi's... More Info about this DVD

    Sister Act DVD

Whoopi Goldberg plays a Reno lounge singer who hides out as a nun when her villainous boyfriend (Harvey Keitel) goes gunning for her. Maggie Smith is the mother superior who has to cope with Whoopi's unorthodox behavior, but the cute script turns the tables and shows how the latter energizes the stodgy convent with song and attitude. A real crowd-pleaser and a perfect vehicle for Goldberg, this is a happy experience all around. --Tom Keogh More Info about this DVD

    Fatal Beauty DVD

A fast talking smart mouth cop investigates a cocaine ring who specalizes in a lethal form of cocaine and sells it to the highest bidder. Basically what the viewer has here is the female version of BEVERLY HILLS COP With Goldberg having the same dialouge Eddie Murphy had. The violence and bloodflow never stops from the opening scene right to the climatic finale. The best part was the massive shoot out in the mall. The film has one weak point Sam Elliot, wasn;t really convincing as a bodyguard who ends up falling for Goldberg. Whoopi Goldberg pulled off a very funny genuine performance. The film is worth seeing and is much, much better than BURGLER realased the same year. More Info about this DVD

    The Associate DVD

A Fun Light-Hearted Movie about a Woman in a Man's World. That one sentence sums up the Associate, with Whoppi Goldberg playing a woman trying to break the glass ceiling in the world of high-finance.

Whoppi does a good job playing Laurel Ayers, a woman who has been passed over too many times. When she sets out on her own, she can't get clients until she creates a partnership with a fictional male, Mr. Cutty. While she experiences success, it is bittersweet because her fictional male partner is seen as the brains of the organization. In the end, she goes to drastic measures to make the world see that she is the one who deserves the credit for her ideas.

This movie is a lot of fun to watch. It's true, you can watch it many times over, especially if you love... More Info about this DVD

    Foul Play DVD

Not short on murder, mayhem, or any other screwball '70s conventions, Foul Play is a wonderful vehicle for Goldie Hawn. She plays Gloria, a librarian "ready to take a chance again," who ends up the target of an assassination ring. Chevy Chase, fresh off of Saturday Night Live, does the closest thing to real acting he would ever achieve (okay, maybe Fletch) as Tony, the cop assigned to protect Gloria. Dudley Moore made an indelible impression on American audiences as Stanley Tibbets, a surprisingly kinky symphony conductor. But it's the quirky things that make this film: the grandmothers playing Scrabble with expletives, Burgess Meredith's snake Esme, the old Japanese couple in the back of the careening limo. From the opening credits with Barry Manilow crooning the... More Info about this DVD
