DVD The Great White Hype
Writer Ron Shelton (Tin Cup) and former National Lampoon scribe Tony Hendra collaborated on the script for this satire about a boxing promoter (Samuel L. Jackson) who gets behind a white fighter (Peter Berg) after his black slugger (Damon Wayans) is mired in a losing streak. While sharp and funny, it's never quite clear what the point of it all is. Director Reginald Hudlin (Boomerang) isn't strong enough or skilled enough as a filmmaker to make this level of satire leap off the screen; fortunately, he's got powerful allies in Jackson, Berg, Wayans, Jeff Goldblum, and the rest of the cast. --Tom Keogh
I can't understand Leonard Maltin's lack of enthusiasm for this movie, which features what may be the best work yet from Samuel Jackson and Jeff Goldblum. The writers, obviously inspired by the Tyson-McNeeley fight, offer us the anti-Rocky, the story of a nobody pitted against the world boxing champion, and the crafty promoter who tries to con the public into believing the outcome is in doubt and buying tickets to see them fight. This film did badly at the box office and caught me a little off guard the first time I saw it because it is so completely cynical, every character is a fraud. But once you realize there are no heroes in this story and accept that it is hilarious. Every time I see it the film gets funnier. The writers might want to do a sequel about women boxers. As women's boxing websites and newspaper coverage make clear, in women's boxing horrible mismatches in which an unprepared gal is fed to an experienced pro in the ring just to fill a fight card are commonplace and a continuing scandal.
Kinda funny but pretty racist
There were some funny moments in the movie but if the roles were reversed the black community would be in uproar. If it was making fun of black kids taking the SAT instead of white people boxing it would be deemed racist. I guess it's not even so much the boxing angle but how white people are portrayed. You have Corbin Bernson (whatever) doing his sissy act from Major League 2, Jeff Goldblum as the nerd, the boxer is just a clueless foolio, and Jon Lovitz is well, Jon Lovitz. The thing is I wouldn't even care if there wasn't such a double standard. It's just the fact that racism is okay if it's against whites that bothers me.
Finally...
Okay the DVD itself isn't so great with only minimal features but why I give this 4 stars is because I waited FOREVER for this thing to finally be released. It is one of my all-time favorite comedies and I laugh so much everytime I see it. It is about time that this was finally released and I say it rules!
Being from the Bronx and working for a landlord who is the
owner of many such buildings, and strangely enough, VERY
similar to Louis Sr, I can appreciate the comedy aspect from
both sides. And it really is closer to the truth than most
people think. Unless of course, you live in one of these
buildings. I don't recall what Borough this is supposed to
take place in, but New York City is full of them.
Very funny movie. Pesci and Co. are all outstanding.
Jon Lovitz stars in this spoof of high school movies along the lines of Dangerous Minds, stories of dedicated teachers in tough inner-city schools plagued by gangs and guns. (Yada, yada...) It should come as no surprise that the film is made by the team that created Airplane! and the Naked Gun comedies. High School High is built upon the same brand of goofy, jokey humor, with gags about campus vending machines that dispense malt liquor and milk cartons with the assistant principal's face printed on the side. The story involves Lovitz's efforts to raise his students' grades while coping with criminals and falling for a fellow instructor (Tia Carrere). The film loses its novelty after a short while and the jokes begin to feel less and less funny until you're... A weak, lazy comedy about an easygoing teacher (Mark Harmon, whose movie career never had the kind of trajectory that his TV work did) who is forced to teach--you guessed it--summer school. What's worse, he gets exactly the kind of kids you'd expect: the losers and slackers who are forced to make up the work they didn't complete during the year. He tries to duck work and let them fend for themselves. But in this mushy Carl Reiner film, the teacher offers some life lessons to his band of delinquents and--surprise, surprise--the kids impart a lesson or two to their teacher, as well. Harmon coasts through the film on his good looks, which are considerable. --Marshall FineMore Info about this DVD Actor(s): Mark Harmon - Kirstie Alley Director(s): Carl Reiner DVD Release Date: Released the 01 June 2004 Usually ships in 24 hours
